The mind has a powerful effect on the way people perceive the outside world and how they interact with others. Many times, negative or unrealistic thinking patterns can work against individuals and prevent them from achieving the success they desire. Here are just a few of the ways that thoughts can affect your goals. Listening To Negative People Most people have a number of friends or family members that habitually see the dark side of life and always imagine the worst scenarios. Learn to recognize these individuals and avoid discussing your plans or goals with them. These naysayers can infect you with doubt and negativity that will not be helpful for reaching your goals. Listening To Your Own Negative Thoughts Everyone has a list of self-criticisms, doubts and fears that often prevents them from trying new activities and setting new goals. These thoughts may suggest ideas such as “I’m not a fast learner,” “people aren’t drawn to me,” or “people like me don’t succeed at this.” Learn to recognize these negative thoughts when they occur and counter it with positive affirmations that will support your actions. Expecting Perfection of Yourself Setting new goals requires learning new skills and behaviors, and you will inevitably get some actions wrong before you get them right. Discard old ideas about perfection and allow yourself to make mistakes along the way. Confusing Your Emotions With Facts Emotions often follow a different path the facts of reality. People may feel fearful about change and may interpret that feeling as a sign that change will be a legitimate threat to their well being. Learn to separate your emotions from the reality around you and make your judgments according to available facts, not on confused and variable emotional states according to Dalton Associates, a company that does marriage counselling in Toronto. Reading the Future Many people are held back by their tendency to project a line of thinking about events that will play out in the future. This habit tends to play out a scenario based on current conditions and doesn’t account for changes that may occur along the way. This becomes a game of expectations that can often become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Taking Setbacks Personally Learning not to take setbacks as a personal failure is critical to your success. Try to think of every setback as an opportunity to learn something important about yourself and about getting to your goal, instead of a trigger for negative thinking patterns. You can create a mindset of success if you carefully monitor your thinking and remove negative patterns to help you reach your personal and professional goals.
