Learning to advertise on Google takes time and you must think like a customer and think about what they will type in the search box. Write a complete list of all the phrases you could enter when looking for the solution to your problem or looking for a product like the one you are selling.

When you have your list of possible search phrases, open Google's keyword tool. Be sure to change geographic locations to match where you want to sell your product. For example, if you want to sell worldwide, you can select "all countries and territories", while if you only want to sell in the United Kingdom, you can select "United Kingdom". Changing this setting will show you the amount of search results for your phrases in that geographic location.

Now enter your phrase in the keyword or phrase box and click "get keyword ideas". This will complete a list that will show you the average number of searches for your keyword along with the number of searches in the previous month. These are the numbers that will determine for you whether an ad is worth placing and whether you should focus on that particular phrase. If, for example, a phrase only has 50 searches per month, it might not be worth pointing out, on the other hand, if you have 5000 searches per month, that might seem more promising.

My general rule of thumb is that anything above 10,000 on this search could be too difficult to work with.

Once you have determined the keyword phrases you want to target, you need to decide whether you only want to target search engines that type exactly that phrase. You can do this by selecting the keywords you want to use and putting them in parentheses like this [your keyword]. This is called an exact match, but if you want broad match, that is, if you want to point to a search engine that types any part of your sentences, don't use the square brackets. Square brackets will generally generate fewer impressions (your ad will show less), but people who see it will be more targeted and later in the buying cycle.
