How to Afford an Organic Lifestyle

Part of the problem with organic foods is the cost. It's more work to produce fruits and vegetables without added chemical pesticides and fertilizers, so the farmers who operate this way have to charge more. It's unfortunate, but quite reasonable when you think about it. That means a consumer who wants to live an organic lifestyle will have to consider the actual financial costs. If you are on a budget, this can pose a problem. But with a little effort, you can bring your costs down and still buy organic.

Buy in Bulk

This particular tip applies to even non-organic purchases. Many bulk food stores now carry a multitude of organic products, and you will save money buying this way. This really only works for non-perishable foods like grains, dried beans and fruit, as well as a number of other dry goods. Not everything they sell is organic, but the larger bulk chains are starting to offer more and more selections. Not only will you save money but you'll also be a little more green by using less packaging.

Buy Locally

Even if you live in a big city, there is probably going to be at least one farmer's market in your area. If not, you may have to skip this tip. Buying locally grown fruits and vegetables in season is almost always cheaper than buying at the supermarket. Of course, not all of these foods are going to be organic so don't many any assumptions. Ask around and see which vendors have organic produce.

Buy Seasonally

This goes along with the previous idea though it can be applied to any supermarket shopping as well. You'll be paying top dollar for any foods that have been shipped a great distance because they are out of season for your area. So avoid the temptation to buy those luscious fruits in the winter time. You will save money by only buying them when they are in season, and being grown closer to home.

Grow Your Own

A yard is best for this approach but you can actually grow a nice little garden on a high-rise balcony if you put in the effort. The more space you have, the better. By growing some of your own vegetables and fruits, you will know exactly how they are grown. With a few good organic techniques under your belt, you can produce your own supply of extremely healthy and chemical-free foods. After paying for a few packets of seeds, the costs will be minimal. This is the place to save the most money if you are able to manage it.

When growing your own, its not as complicated as you might think to go organic. Many natural pesticide products are available these days so you don't need to be an agricultural scientist to handle it yourself.

Do Without

If eating organic is important to you, you may simply have to give up some other things in your life to balance the cost. Find a few other less-important luxuries that you can pass on, and feel good knowing that the money is spent for a better reason.

Movement is one of the most honest forms of self-connection. The body never lies. It holds stress, records emotion, and reveals when something feels off.
