According to a study, we spend 70 % of our lives on our mattress, that means the mattress is a very important part of our life. Like our other home stuff like carpet and furniture, cleaning of the mattress is also important. If you think mattress cleaning is so hard, in this blog, you will learn how to clean a mattress at home with some basic cleaning tools and things.

PART ONE: UNDRESSING THE BED

Undressing the bed is an important part of mattress cleaning. It makes our bed more refreshing after mattress cleaning. Here is the step by step process for undressing the bed and it’s cleaning.

  • First of all, remove all the stuff from the bed and Pillows, blankets, toys, mobiles, hairpin etc, and make sure that nothing is left on the bed.
  • Remove the things layer by layer like a bedsheet and then any fitted sheet and last a mattress protector, if you have.
  • Scour all the dust from the top layer bed sheet and mattress protector then remove the pillow covers. Put them all for a wash in your washing machine. For better washing assistance, take a look at the manufacturer’s tag on the bedsheet and pillow covers.
  • After washing them take them into the sunlight and dry them all. If it’s not possible in sunlight, take them into a fully ventilated room and switch on the fan on full power and spread them all.

PART TWO: MATTRESS CLEANING

Till the whole bed stuff is drying, now we can begin our mattress cleaning process. Here below is the step by step process about mattress cleaning.

  • Vacuuming: The first step of cleaning a mattress is Vacuuming. Vacuuming removes all the dust mites, dead skin cells, hairs and debris etc. For better cleaning assistance, take an upholstery cleaning nozzle which helps to clean your mattress into its cracks and edges.
  • Stain Removing: Now it's time to clean the stains from the mattress. Take 40ml of hydrogen peroxide with 20ml of liquid dishwasher in a bowl. Stir them well with a spoon. This solution is so useful for removing stubborn stains like accidentally fallen food and beverages. Now take an old toothbrush and dip into it. Gently apply it on the stain and move it in a circular motion. For a Memory foam mattress, apply the minimum amount of liquid solution because they are not designed to get wet.
  • Biological stains: Biological stains like baby or pet urine, vomit, blood, sweat and grease etc. should be clean by an enzyme cleaner. Just take some enzyme cleaner on a clean damp cloth and apply it on the stain. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. And then blot with a clean cloth. But never use these mattress stain removal solution directly, because the mattress is not designed to get wet.
  • Baking Soda: After removing all the stains from mattress, take some baking soda and sprinkle on the whole mattress. Leave it for about 30 minutes or as much as you can. If there is any odour present in the mattress, baking soda will absorb it.
  • Vacuuming Again: Vacuum the whole mattress again as it will vacuum all the baking soda and any odour absorbed by it.
  • Air Out: Let the air out the mattress. If there is any moisture present in the mattress, it can turn into the mould. So it can be a good idea to get the mattress air out. If you have a window in your room, open it and let it air dry.
  • Ready the Bed: So, now you have clean your bed sheets, mattress protector, pillow cover etc. Now you can ready your bed for use.
