Despite knowing that exercise keeps us healthy and fit, most of us struggle to work out as often as we should. We often cannot fit our exercise routine into our busy schedules, or simply can’t find the motivation to hit the gym. When the weather starts to get colder, it seems almost impossible to convince ourselves to exercise. Even those who exercise regularly find it difficult to keep up with their regular exercise regime during winter.

Here are some ways you can keep your fitness regime on track even when it's cold.

Find an exercise partner

It can be very difficult to get out of the house during cold weather for a morning or evening walk. Finding an exercise partner can be an excellent way to stay motivated. It’s even better if you can join a group for exercise. When you exercise with other people, you won’t be able to use the cold weather as an excuse, and you’ll also get to socialize while exercising.

Change your exercise schedule

Instead of going for a walk in the morning or evening, choose a time of the day when the sun is bright and the temperatures aren’t too chilly. No one feels like heading out on a dark winter morning or evening. Instead, you can go out for a walk or go to the gym during your lunch break or after lunch.

Wear layers

If you want to exercise outdoors then you should wear layers. This will warm up your body and the cold weather cannot hamper your exercise routine. More importantly, you can shed layers as appropriate as you warm up during the session, to avoid overheating.

Warm-up before exercising

You should always warm up properly before exercising, and this is particularly important when the weather is cold. It is better to do the warm-up before leaving the comfort of your home so the cold weather won’t affect you. Warming up will loosen up the joints as well as prepare your muscles for exercise to avoid strain or injury. It will also get you in the mood for exercising as you will no longer feel cold!

Stay hydrated

It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day even during cold weather. When you drink lots of water you get more energy. So you won’t feel sluggish, and will instead be motivated to exercise. Naturally, during colder days, we don’t feel like doing anything. By drinking lots of water you can switch your body into an active mode needed to get going.

Exercise indoors

If it’s too cold outside, exercise indoors. There’s lots of home gym equipment in the market and you can buy one or two pieces without breaking your budget. A treadmill is a good option. If you don’t have a home gym then you can do cardio, yoga, Zumba, or other exercises at home – there are plenty of exercise videos that you can follow on YouTube. You can also arrange a Zoom session of yoga or Zumba with your friends to stay motivated to exercise. That way exercise will become a fun event rather than a chore.

Get involved in sport

Instead of grinding away at the gym, why not get into the sport? You can start playing cricket or badminton with your neighbors, or join a local sports club. This will mean you stay active during the colder months and also get the chance to socialize.

Have a goal

You should set up a goal for the winter months and stay focused on your goal. For example, your goal may be to lose 3 kilos over winter. To achieve such a goal you need to exercise regularly and eat healthy food. So, if you don’t feel like exercising one cold morning, just remind yourself of your goal and this will help you to get motivated to exercise.

Know the benefits of exercising

Exercising during cold weather has lots of benefits other than keeping you in good shape. Regular exercise during cold days helps to fight the chills. When you exercise, this pumps your blood and this circulates more heat through your body. This can boost your immune system and help you to burn more calories.

The dark and cold weather can make you feel gloomy. If you exercise it will boost your mood and you will feel better in no time. Exercising will also improve your cardiovascular health and you can work hard throughout the day despite the cold weather. Remember you will be depriving yourself of all these amazing benefits if you don’t exercise during winter. Remind yourself of these benefits when you don’t feel like exercising.

So, no matter how cold the weather is, never skip your regular exercise routine. In winter tend to eat unhealthy food, particularly over the festive season. So, if you don’t exercise to burn those extra calories that you consume then you will get out of shape and it may also affect your health and wellbeing. Keep yourself motivated to exercise during the colder months and you’re sure to enjoy the benefits!
