When progressing through life, most people focus on making financial investments that will hopefully pay off one day. Saving for retirement and growing your wealth can help you have a brighter future, but if you want to thrive during your golden years, you'll need to take a holistic approach and also invest in yourself.

Nourish Yourself with Nutrition and Movement

Eating right and exercising your body is crucial to health and happiness later in life. The worst thing you can do is be sedentary. Recent studies have shown that sitting for prolonged amounts of time puts you at a greater risk of serious health problems, such as diabetes and certain cancers. You don’t want to save for retirement just to lose the freedom that comes with having a healthy body. Commit to walking, doing yoga, lifting weights, dancing and other forms of activity as often possible.

Take Care of Your Teeth

If you practice excellent oral hygiene now, you can spare yourself suffering when you get older. Along with the obvious tips, like brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily, avoiding sugar, cigarettes and too much alcohol, there are a few additional things you can do.

First, consider buying a water pick, which has been proven to be significantly more effective than brushing and flossing alone. Shooting a stream of warm water between your teeth is also very soothing and will soon become a cherished part of your nightly ritual. Be sure to floss as well. The methods work best in conjunction with each other.

Finish by rinsing your mouth in a warm salt solution, or if you prefer, a fluoride mouthwash. Remember that an annual dental visit and bi-annual cleanings are a great form of preventative dental care. A little bit of daily maintenance can reduce the likelihood of bigger dental issues.

Stay on Top of Your Emotions

A little therapy never hurt anyone. If you want to be happy later in life, it makes sense to work on your current happiness. If you don't, you'll be carrying quite a load in the future.

Invest in Things that Can Grow

There's wisdom in investing time and energy into building a network of friends and family who can grow alongside you. It's wise to plant gardens and watch saplings become trees. If you work toward creating a legacy of some kind, you'll be able to watch it pay off during your golden years.

Never ignore your passions, and never think it's too late to go for your dreams. If you start taking better care of yourself and making progress toward your goals today, you'll have a bright future ahead of you.
