Men definitely make up a minority among cosmetic surgery patients. However, the number of men who undergo cosmetic surgery procedures is on the rise. Polls and surveys seem to show that an increasing number of men are becoming comfortable with the idea of getting cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction.
One of the most popular male cosmetic surgeries is liposuction. The word liposuction means literally “the suction of fat,” and during this procedure excess and unwanted fat is suctioned out of the body. This fat usually comes from one or a few selected target areas. During a typical liposuction, about eight or so pounds of fat can be removed.
The surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia, although local is more common. During the procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions over the target area, and then he or she will insert a cannula into the incisions. A cannula is a thin, hollow needle which is attached to a vacuum device. The doctor is able to use this device to break up and then remove the unwanted fat.
Among men, the abdomen is the most popular area for liposuction. Given that most men store a relatively large amount of their excess fat around their abdomens, this isn't much of a surprise. Both the belly and the flanks are popular target areas. Liposuction procedures in these areas can help to reduce the appearance of love handles and beer bellies.
The chest is another popular site. A large number of men experience the development of unwanted chest fat. Because this fat buildup can resemble a women's breasts, this condition is commonly referred to as man boobs. This can be make it embarrassing to sunbathe, go swimming, or change in a locker room. A liposuction can reduce the amount of fat a man carries around his chest, thereby improving his appearance.
Of course, those aren't the only places where a man can get liposuction. In fact, liposuction can be performed almost anywhere there is excess fat.
If you are a man and would like to know if a liposuction could improve your appearance, please talk to a surgeon. He or she should be able to answer any questions you might have about the procedure.
