Param Pujya Dadashri, an enlightened being explains, “The very function of the mind is to think. Thoughts shall arise even if you tell them not to.”

Our mind functions just as all the senses do. Just as the ears cannot stop from hearing even if you don’t want to hear; similarly, the mind cannot refrain from thinking even if you wish to do so. The mind is simply carrying out its function. But since we don’t understand the science of the mind, we keep trying to push the thoughts away.

Remain separate from mind
He suggests we rather remain separate from our mind. “You can tell the mind, ‘Keep shouting all by yourself. I am not with you.’

When you remain separate, thoughts will automatically exhaust. Thoughts arise on their own. You just have to keep watching the thoughts; see what kind of thoughts are coming, that’s all.”

Neither approve nor disapprove, just remain separate of the thoughts that keep arising. If you approve of a thought, it turns into a desire. In such a case, no sooner someone raises an objection for it, you shall tend to get angry. But if you remain separate, not approving of it, in no time the thought will reduce to nothing. You just keep knowing what type of thoughts are coming.
The nature of the mind Vs The nature of the Self!

The mind is in its natural state where thoughts keep arising one after another.

However, we are not in our nature. This is because we do not know our real Self as yet! The natural function of the Self is to ‘see and know’ with absolute equanimity, the natural work of the mind, being separate from the Self.

Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan says, “Once the knowledge of the Self i.e. the knowledge of ‘I am a Pure Soul’ arises, the mind will be contained. The mind can never get contained otherwise.”

It is with the grace of the Living Gnani, the Enlightened One, that we can realize the Self!!! Our conviction changes from ‘I am the body’ to ‘I am a Pure Soul’ and we realize that my nature is only to see and know.

After Self-Realization, our belief, ‘I am indeed the one who is having this thought’ also drops.
Owing to the ignorance of the Self, we believe, “I am the body. And I am thinking.” This is from where the problem commences. And it perpetuates when we go on to say, “Why do I get such thoughts?” and get upset.

However, after Self-Realization, even if the mind is wandering around, you are able to ‘see’ and ‘know’ it, with equanimity. There is no interference or suffering involved! As you begin to see every thought separate from your Self with equanimity, gradually the mind begins to exhaust naturally, and eventually it comes to a complete end!!

So where is the need to get into a thoughtless state of mind then?! Param Pujya Dadashri says that when your mind is without thoughts, you become absent-minded. So why not use the mind to achieve bliss, instead?
