Liposuction Is A Surgery, And Prospective Patients Must Expect Some Pain
Written by Edward Cullen
Surgeries cause pain. It’s one of life's unfortunate facts that damaging the body in any way, including opening the skin, causes pain. Surgeries come with risks and complications, as well. Even the most minor surgeries require some sort of recovery period, and during that period discomfort can be expected. Although liposuction is a minor cosmetic surgery that is generally considered to be safe, it can nonetheless be painful and can cause discomfort for several weeks post surgery. A few basic self-care tips can help to alleviate the pain, but there’s no getting away from it entirely.
Sometimes people don’t seem to realize that liposuction is a surgery. They know that fat is sucked out of a person’s body during the procedure, but they may not place it alongside necessary medical surgeries such as a double bypass.. Certainly, it is cosmetic and generally not necessary, but those who are considering it must realize that it is a real surgery.
All surgeries come with risks. Because each person’s body is unique, it is impossible to guess ahead of time who will be allergic to certain medications or who will react badly to anesthesia. While most people are just fine when given an anesthetic, there is a very small percentage of the population which have an adverse reaction that can be fatal.
Other risks that are associated with surgery include damage to tissues or organs and internal bruising and scarring. Probably the greatest risk of any surgery, though, is the risk of infection. Germs of all kinds can cause infections at any time, but there are especially many ways they can enter the body during surgery. They can come from the surface of the skin, from the instruments and tools used during the surgery, from the person or people performing the surgery, or even from the air itself.
The human body fights infections constantly, but the trauma caused by surgery can limit the body’s ability to fight off infections effectively. Although liposuction is not particularly dangerous in this respect, but it is good to be aware of the risk. To minimize the risk of infection, surgeons do their best to keep a sterile work space and sterile instruments.
However, even when the surgery goes perfectly and no complications occur, the procedure is still painful. Of course, anesthetic is used during the surgery itself to numb the affected area. After it has worn off, patients should expect to experience some pain. Fortunately, the incisions made during liposuction are small and should not be too painful during recovery. Most painful is the internal bruising that results from the procedure. Some amount of bruising is pretty much inevitable, and it can cause pain and sensations of numbness for weeks.
Wrapping the affected area tightly can help with pain and can assist with healing. Generally patients are given a tight-fitting compression garment to wear for several days to help minimize pain and improve their results.. Self-care is also important during the recovery period. Avoiding strenuous physical activities and simply getting plenty of rest can speed the healing process quite a bit and minimize the pain of recovery.
