Makes a GREAT Valentine’s Day Gift

As Valentine’s Day approaches, all of us need to remember what love is all about. We need to remember that love is the reason why hope springs eternal in all of us. To love and be loved is our raison d’etre – our reason for being.

It is hard to believe, but 42 years ago I met the perfect gal for me! Her name is Liz. She was a California girl and I was a simple country boy from Missouri. On our first date, she ask me the size of the “city” I grew up in. I said, “620.” After thoughtful reflection, she said, “Well, 620,000 is not all that small!” To which I replied – no, my town had only 620 people. Oh, the stuff of love. Big city girl meets small town boy. And the rest is history.

We dated for some 8 months until I proposed to her on Valentine’s Day 1966. To my delight, she said, “Yes!” Now, 42 years later, I know that I am the luckiest guy alive!

Frankly, I must say, our love affair was made in heaven. We love each other unconditionally. We love each other more than we ever could have imagined.

As to me, I love her more than life itself. In fact, I could not imagine my life without her. I cannot imagine where I’d be without her love, her support, and her encouragement. Frankly, I got lucky – I married UP! Most men do.

My bride of 42 years is the love of my life. The time we get to spend on Earth together is short, but the time we get to spend in eternity is forever. Thank God for that!

When I wake up in the morning and see her sleeping next to me, I wonder how I got so lucky. How could I marry the girl of my dreams? As I watch her sleep – as I look at her and marvel at her beauty – as I think about all of the goodness she has brought into my life – about all of the love she has brought my way – I wonder how I got so lucky.

Liz is the love of my life. She brought me a beautiful daughter who has blessed us with marvelous grandchildren – Hudson and Hope. She makes every day for me a special one. I cannot even begin to wonder where I would be in life without her.

The truth is, my friends, everybody needs somebody. Everybody needs someone to love. Everybody needs to be loved. As my mother used to say, “Life is short. Find someone to love and your short time on planet Earth will be wonderful!” Moms are so smart!

I found my “someone to love.” She is my hope, my dreams, my inspiration, my best friend, my motivation to awake in the morning, and the peace I feel when I go to bed at night.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, it is the perfect time to pause and reflect upon what love is all about. Take time to remember that love is the reason why hope springs eternal in all of us. To love and be loved is our raison d’etre – our reason for being.

Each day of my life, I remind myself that I have found my reason for being. I have found the love of my life and her name is Liz, my bride of 42 years. It doesn’t get any better.

May you find your raison d’etre. May you find the love of your life as I have.

Love well.
