A resolution is a goal, the aim is to help you to improve yourself, perhaps feel better about life or achieve a dream.

Unfortunately, each year millions of Resolutions are made and broken. Millions of us treat a resolution as a wish…hoping it will happen….but it never does.

Today I’m going to share with you the secret of turning resolutions into results. The one and only way to accomplish your resolution is to use a systematic method that will focus your attention.

7- Steps Goal Setting Model that I’m about to show you is the system that most successful people use on regular bases to achieve whatever they want. It’s very simple and to the point, you can accelerate your attainment of any goals for yourself as well, just follow the system, make it a habit and see the results for yourself.

Step One: Be Specific and Clear about your Goal

The first step towards attaining a goal is to decide – exactly what you want. This immediately moves you into a separate category of people who know what they want in life, because most people have no idea of what they really want.

So, be clear and decide specifically what you want. Instead of vague goals, for example, “I want to lose weight”, be specific about exactly how much weight or better still inches you want to lose and over what specific period of time. You have to understand that vague goals produce vague results or even no result at all. Therefore, be specific and clear about your goal.

Step Two: Write your Goal down on Paper

Yes, step number two is writing your goal on paper, an unwritten goal is just a fantasy. Think on paper, it’s one of the most important keys to success. Success begins with a pen, a pad of paper, and a few minutes of your time.

Let me tell you something, if you can’t write down what you want, clearly and specifically, on a piece of paper, then it shows that you are not clear yourself. Perhaps you are not even sure if you want it or maybe you are afraid that you won’t achieve it.

When you write and describe your goal on a piece of paper, you give it a power of its own. It becomes concrete; it is no more a fantasy, you can touch it, you can feel it, you can see it and you can check your progress against it.

Stick a piece of paper with your goal written on it on your fridge door, your bathroom mirror, your bedroom, anywhere you want, so that it all the time reminds you of your goal.

State it in present tense and as if you have already achieved it. Instead of saying, for example, I want to lose weight, write I am slim, I weigh 9.5 stones, my waist is 29 inches etc. This way, you start with the end in mind. Imagining a better you in the future will motivate you to do all you can to get where you want to be.

Step Three: Set Deadlines

Setting deadlines is the third step toward achieving goals. If it is a large goal, set a series of sub deadlines. A deadline will act as a forcing system on your subconscious mind and will begin to move you towards your goal rapidly, and once you start moving towards your goal you’ll notice that your goal is moving towards you.

If you want to lose one stone in six months time, set yourself smaller goals or a series of deadlines; eg. Three pounds a month only, and if you don’t achieve it by the deadline, then don’t worry, simply set another deadline. Be kind to yourself, don’t punish or dislike yourself for any mistakes you make or deadlines you don’t meet. We all learn from our mistakes.

You need to find out what has caused the setback. For instance, if you don’t achieve your goal by the deadline, ask yourself, why I didn’t achieve it. Be honest to yourself, do not make any excuses. Excuses are the nails used to build a house of failure. When you ask yourself the above question, you would find out what stopped you from reaching your goal. Once you have found out why, give yourself another deadline and do not make the same mistake again.

Step Four: Make a List

The fourth step is making a list of everything you could possibly think of that you will have to do to achieve your goal. The broader your list, the more motivation you will have and the more intense your desire will become. You will believe even more in the possibility of your goal, being able to clearly see every single step you have to take. People make the mistake of not laying out a list of all the little things they have to do to achieve their goals, and this alone can hold them back.

Let’s take the weight loss example again, for this goal the list might contain things like, certain food limitation, eating habits, exercise, meal times, etc. You cannot successfully lose weight if you do not include any of the above in your list; it would be as if a piece of jigsaw puzzle is missing.

Step Five: Planning

During the fifth step of goal setting you need to take your list and organize it into a plan. Well, here’s the weight loss example again, a weight loss plan need to contain detail of what you are going to include in your meals and snacks, when you are going to exercise, how many steps you need to take a day etc. when to do them all and how to do them.

Step Six: Take Action

Take action! This is the biggest killer for most people, because they tend to procrastinate or perhaps have a subconscious block. They might be able to think big, have great ideas combined with high hopes and dreams. They may even write down their goals. But when it comes to taking action, they always have an excuse or a reason to procrastinate, to put things off until a later time. This is the point where most clients come to a Hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapy allows you to eliminate any fears or blocks that hold you back, it can help you achieve your goals without the struggle.

It does not mean that you cannot come over those obstacles on your own. You certainly have the power to do so, but it needs a bit of an effort. Once you start moving toward your goal that is when you begin to feel the desire and power that goes along with goal setting. And once you have started your journey, it is much easier for you to continue moving in that direction.

Step Seven: Keep Moving

Everyday do something, big or small, that moves you towards your major goal. Never let a day slip by without engaging in some action that will move you another step in the right direction. Some days it will be a tiny teeny baby step, others it will be a giant step, but remember….keep moving!

That’s it, as I said in the beginning it is a simple but powerful system and anyone can turn it into a habit. Goal setting is the most important step in achieving your resolutions. It is the foundation of personal and professional success.

Don’t wait until the New Year, start setting yourself goals now, practice the seven steps of goal setting and master it. I can assure you that if you do that, you can achieve anything you want in life with much more ease and it will prove to you that nothing is impossible.
