“Know the Name; Know the Person, Decoding Letters to Reveal Secrets Hidden in Names”, is the result of fifteen years of direct observation and research on names. This research was followed by three years of testing and is the foundation for which this column is based.
Part #1 – the first 15 Baby Boomers and those retiring are entering grandparenthood. Our generation was the largest in history and many of our children are jumping into family life in just as big a way. Use this two part list of 26 things to grandchildren proof your home. This time of your life can be one of the rewards for all of your years of hard work. The 15 basic things you need to grandchildren proof your home. You may have heard these before, but just in case you haven’t: 1.) Pick up all breakables that little hands could reach or knock over
The process of getting older reminds me a lot of what Ernest Hemingway had to say about going broke. He commented that people go bankrupt in two ways: “…gradually and then suddenly”. That seems to be how old age sets in too. There’s the slow cumulative effect over decades…arthritis, change in blood vessels, osteopenia.
How does it make you feel when someone expresses their sincere gratitude to you? Do you accept their thanks gracefully? Do you tend to discount the significance of what they are so grateful for? Or, do you brush it off with a quick “you’re welcome” and move on?
With no family history of cancer, you just don’t expect your sister, who is ten years younger than you are, to get this diagnosis. You’re hit in the stomach. You think, what can I do? Reality sets in, you read, talk to friends and doctors, form a plan with her. * I love you. I want to help. I want to support and be with you. * You are strong, smart, positive and have many friends and family close by.r
It’s Monday and I’ve accomplished absolutely nothing today. I just can’t seem to get motivated. I guess it’s time to check my alignment once again. What’s that? Check my alignment? Why whatever do you mean?
Written by Janie Knetzer Owning a dog is a wonderful experience. The unconditional love and companionship that you receive from a dog can often be unmatched. On the other hand many dog owners become frustrated with unwanted behavior on behalf of their dog. They feel nothing can be done to correct unwanted dog behavioral problems such as leash pulling, aggressiveness, jumping, barking, separation anxiety, digging and so on.
Dear Jim: My wife and I have been married fourteen years (second marriages, all kids are grown). I’m already retired, and my wife has decided to retire next June at age 64 after a long career teaching Spanish in high school. She recently announced, though, that she wants to join the Peace Corps after she retires, and work somewhere in Latin America. She says it’s something she’s dreamed about since college, and if she doesn’t do it now she never will. This would entail a two-year commitment, on top of two months of training in the U.S.
A mom called me saying she just wasn’t prepared for this empty nest. She read so many baby and teen books but nothing would help this sorrow she was feeling as an empty nester. Change is vulnerable. Change doesn’t mean, even if you read and prepare, that you won’t have days of inertia and sorrow for what is left behind. Our parenting roles shift and don’t travel in a straight line. It isn’t something you get over or suddenly get about this stage of life. Tears still fall. Good news, a freedom and joy do show up.
written by Dr. Karen Purcell, M.M., N.D., C.N. Many people think that all nutritional supplements are “created equal”. Well, that is simply not the case. Many, in fact, most of the supplements in the US are concocted in a laboratory. They are chemicals and synthetics. For example, if the word acid is used in the name of the product, it is synthetic. Like ascorbic acid or folic acid. These are chemicalized synthetic forms of Vitamin C Ascorbate or Folate (part of the B Complex series). So…what’s the difference?
Written by Mark Sneller, PhD In today’s world, good indoor air quality (IAQ) is a subject that is frequently on the lips of people conce ed with greener and cleaner air. Good IAQ is important in lodgings because the livelihood of many tens of thousands depends on repeat business. If the customer is not satisfied, he will not return. On the other hand, the satisfied customer can be a powerful spokesperson for good green lodging.
written by Marjorie Rothstein Did you know that Hollywood is not where the beautiful and famous hang out? In fact, Malibu and Beverly Hills are the two places where they are most frequently spotted. And one place you’re sure to run into them is at the classic Beverly Hilton Hotel, located right in the heart of Beverly Hills.
Written by Kathi Casey, ERYT, CPI June is an interesting month. We have: Fathers Day, Flag Day, it’s vision research month, national men’s and women’s wellness weeks are in June, as well as home safety month. Since wellness is one of Baby Boomers’ top conce s, I’ll stick with that topic.
written by Allan J. Hamilton, MD, FACS I’m supposed to write a column about wellness. Wellness describes a state of sustained health, harmony and wellbeing. But, I reserve the right to occasionally write about state of dis-ease. States of hurt, outrage, and of anger. And of the current upset that exists in my own home state.
A recent report I read indicated that the earnings of non-green products nationally is at $12 billion per year compared with similar green products that earn $1 billion per year. At first I thought this a paltry relationship until I realized that a dozen years ago the difference would have been much greater. But “thanks” to illnesses, complaints, economics, education, conferences, lawsuits and concomitant jury awards, and other factors, breakthroughs are being made.
So many people write us, explaining how guilty they feel doing anything that smacks of “getting people to buy” – “getting people to spend their money.” For Service Providers, Service Professionals this isn’t surprising since we’ve all been trained to be in Service – not in business.
I can’t believe that I’m writing January 2010! Is it my imagination or did this decade breeze by so fast that my hair is still settling onto my shoulders? For many of us Baby Boomers, the last ten years has been fraught with caring for or watching our aging family members deal with such issues as Alzheimers, Osteoporosis, Heart Disease and Cancer. Seeing these diseases so up close and personal has made us all the more determined not to go there ourselves and we are steering ourselves onto a much different course than that of our parents.
written by Betty Smith If you care for your ill and ailing loved ones, and you are feeling guilty or stressed out or overwhelmed by the challenges of being a full-time family caregiver, KNOW that you are not alone. Like the airline flight attendants say, “Put on your own oxygen mask first, before you try to assist others.” You, as the primary caregiver, may not realize you have to take care of yourself first. Look at it this way: If something happens to you, who will take care of your loved ones? You are important. Give yourself this small but vital gift of self-support.
Feedback from students in the course I teach at Villanova, titled Managing the Intergenerational Workforce, once again supports my contention that: 1) most employers are either oblivious to or in denial about the historic impact of four dominant generations in the workforce, and 2) transformational changes in public and corporate policies are needed to avert seismic intergenerational conflict over jobs, pay, benefits and advancement opportunities.
Trusts and Trust Companies have existed for hundreds of years. Trusts existed back in the days of Rome, and became popular in England when the knights left their properties in the care of someone they trusted while they went away to fight in the Crusades. Trusts provide a continuity of service to those who have a need for a relationship built upon a confidence and on legal protection. Trust laws vary among the different states and countries. There are many different kinds of trusts. The premise, however, is the same in every jurisdiction and in every type of trust.
I am often asked for ways to help improve an elder’s appearance. Even if your elder is healthy, he or she might neglect physical appearance. In some cases, it has been years since anyone paid close attention to your elder’s physical appearance, and a little bit of attention goes a long way. Bring your elder to the hairdresser or barber. Give her a regular pedicure and manicure. If you can afford it, a facial can be a real treat.
written by Dr. Michael Kaye In 1993 I moved back to Pennsylvania from Califo ia. It was great to be with family and friends again. When I returned to my neighborhood, it was fun to visit with all the old neighbors. One of my neighbors was very much the “grandma type”. She greeted me at the door and said, “Oh my! Look how you’ve grown!” I thought to myself, either I have really have grown to a new height (and I knew I didn’t) or this woman is shrinking.
After extensive research – by which I mea I talked to a bunch of my friends – I have concluded that you can divide boomers into one of three different classes. What?, you may scoff, divide 76 million people into just three strata? Yes, indeed. Here’s how. Class 1: Boomer superlatus fortunatus
With all of the compelling advertising on television, radio and print about the many “results oriented” exercise programs available, choosing the right one can be difficult. Many fitness programs on the market today are too difficult for the average Baby Boomer to complete – or at least we think they are! I have several clients who own book shelves full of fitness videos that have been watched once and never picked up again.
After graduating PT school in 1978, I was hired as a staff Physical Therapist for St Charles Hospital on Long Island. St Charles has a wonderful rehab area where patients who have suffered physical assaults such as a stroke, debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic brain injuries get intensive therapy seven days per week. I vividly remember my idealistic 21 year old enthusiasm; finally getting the opportunity to exercise all of the theory that I had learned with my patients.
written by Neal Dranoff This posting is a follow-up to my August 3rd post in The 50 Plus Male, “Refining The Physically Fit Male—Surviving The Urban Jungle.” I regard that as one of my more important editorial pieces since it revolves around improving our health, specifically in the “newly” recognized area of functional fitness.
written by Kathi Casey, ERYT, CPI Are you one of the 20 millio Americans who feel that it’s become “the norm” as well as a frequent topic of conversation at parties and events, that in this day and age it’s impossible for anyone over 40 to get a good night’s sleep? Are you wishing that someone had told you about this before you got here, so that you could have stocked up on your sleep in your 30’s?
Written By: Lew Hamburger It was Cherry Blossom time in Washington. I was on the phone in my office a few blocks from the White House when a secretary came bursting through doorway. “Lew, the painters are fighting in the hall. Do something.”
Most people assess how they are doing based on how they are feeling, which is often misleading and unsafe. The philosophy is, do whatever you want to your body and as long as you have no symptoms, you’re okay. However, the reality is our actions, or lack of, have consequences. Most problems occur for weeks or even years before the symptoms take place. The best thing you can do for your health is to be proactive rather than reactive. Understanding that there are many components that comprise optimal health is a good start!
I’m in the middle of a lazy, overcast Sunday morning putting the finishing touches on breakfast. It’s the one day of the week I have our paper (The Philadelphia Inquirer) delivered, providing the opportunity to “lose myself” for a couple of hours reading through its entirety. The Currents section, offering editorials and commentary, and the Local News section contain articles that are unwittingly related to one another and spark the idea behind this post.
written by A.T. "Al" Benelli, CFP, FIC Money problems can overwhelm a relationship, particularly one on the verge of marriage or a live-in arrangement. According to the Financial Planning Association, here are a few ways to avoid potential conflicts: Agree to talk about money: The first discussion should deal with whether they can talk about it. Consider how each person’s parents dealt with money issues and whether those practices would be worth copying or avoiding. Most important, recognize that money problems will happen.

I think most of us push ourselves too hard to do something when clarity hasn’t arrived. Parents call me tearful that they can’t get over the emptiness. Who is rushing you? Do you think if you float that might bring you something you didn’t even realize had value? A mother, who now lives solo, since her children are married and she is divorced, was ready to explore what might be possible for her that would bring new meaning to her life. Her mind chattered away daily at her to do something, snap out of it, get a life already.
Written By: Natalie Caine, M.A. Spring cleaning triggers a part of you that wants to toss the old, clear out your space, and then pick a new, to decorate and bring in beauty. Beauty feeds your peace and your creativity. A plant, like rosemary, chamomile, or basil in your home can calm you. We forget to take in the scents of life. I have an herb plant in every room and at my door step. Five dollars to buy or pennies to plant by seed. Did you know nature has a fantastic display of colors to spark your ideas for paint colors and decorating?
written by Jim Duzak How would you like to wake up and learn that a woman you had an affair with has gone public with all the details? Even worse, how would you like to be a wife who reads that her husband’s motive for the affair was that she hates sex and is severely imbalanced psychologically? Welcome, David and Wendy, to the brave new world of “gotcha” sites.
Connections Around the corner is a friendr In this great city that has no end. Yet days go by and weeks rush on, Before I know, a year is gone. I never see my old friend’s face, For life’s a swift and terrible race. He knows I like him just as well, As in the days I rang his bellr And he rang mine. Yes we were stronger, younger then, And now we’re busy, stressed, tired men. Tired of playing the foolish game, Tired of trying to make a name. “Tomorrow, I will call on Jimr Just to show I’m thinking of him.” But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,r
Written By: A.T. "Al" Benelli, CFP, FIC The U.S. economy may be recovering, but travel experts say the vacation deals available last year are still going to be around for stingy travelers this year. With that in mind, here are some ways the Financial Planning Association recommends to save on travel this summer
written by Judith Sherven, PhD and Jim Sniechowski, PhD If you are a beginner at Internet marketing, you’ve no doubt experienced the frustration that most everyone starting out goes through. Why? Because most of the newbie Internet marketing courses are simply not appropriate for what you need. It’s as simple as that. Why? Because the Internet marketing gurus didn’t start their online careers as newbies. So they never had to go through what you are going through. They don’t understand what it is you need.
written by Traci Brosman If you believe you can do it, you can. If you believe you can’t, you won’t. How do you see your reflection? Is it distorted in the ripples of a wave? Is it clear as in a quiet body of water? Is it completely opposite as in looking at a mirror? How you see yourself in relation to your world predicts how you will behave and perform in your daily routines.
Some half-million people live in the balmy Mexican city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, and tonight it looks like every one of them has shown up at a downtown square known as Marimba Park. Surrounded by dancers, musicians are beating out hip-shaking salsas, merengues and socas on the wooden slats of their xylophone-like marimbas, backed by blaring trumpets and saxes.
Submitted by Boomer-Living.com, the Official Guide to Baby Boomers Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” Albert Einstein Where does hope come from? And where can I get more of it – you might ask. Hope comes from your desire to seek a better future. It can come from the realization and acceptance that you cannot do it alone combined with the courage to reach out. Hope can come from reaching out to God to help guide you on your path – from out of the darkness and into the light. Hope can lift you out of sadness and help you focus on a new beginning. Or a renewal.
Hi folks! You’ll find quite a difference in the overall tone of this post compared to what you’re used to reading in The 50 Plus Male. I’ll go as far as stating I’m aware this journey goes against conventional wisdom in many ways: subject matter, my thoughts and actions, and perhaps most importantly, I ask a lot of questions instead of providing streams of thought that help you answer a particular problem…so with great humility, I kindly ask you at the outset to accept my mea culpa.
Written by: David Russell, Ph.D., D.Sc Special diets making claims about the health benefits of their protocols are very popular today. It can be confusing that new diet regimens appear all the time and that the whole field of nutrition seems to change its mind radically every year or so. What was “in” and healthy one year is now “out” and unhealthy the next.
Here’s to a Happy New Year and to getting everything that you want out of 2012. Today you have a clean slate with a brand new year spread out in front of you, filled with endless possibilities. How will you harness your potential to create the very best you? I recommend using the teachings of Dr. Maxwell Maltz in his legendary book ‘The New Psycho-Cybe etics’. Dr. Maltz created the original science of self improvement and success, so who better to turn to when you’re ready to take your life to another level. His teachings have stood the test of time.
Question: What is one of the most valuable recyclables in the history of humanity? Answer: YOU! Let’s face it. Boomers have lived, loved, and learned through some of the most interesting, challenging, and amazing times. Interacting with a generation of children and young adults who can hardly imagine a video-free lifestyle, places some of us in a self-assessed position of technological inferiority. And with technology integrated into virtually everything we touch these days, this covers a huge amount of territory.
Baby boomers should take notice to their dog’s skin. The condition of dog skin is a big indicator of a pet’s overall health. When skin problems occur, the dog may respond by excessive scratching, chewing, licking, etc. There can be a wide range of causes including exte al parasites, allergies, infections, metabolic problems, stress, or it can be combination of all. Disease can also be a cause. All can affect the dog’s skin. Common skin problems in dogs are: * Licking, scratching and chewing the skin * Scabs * Hot spotsr

written by A.T. "Al" Benelli, CFP, FIC It’s been just about a month since the traditional IRS Income Tax filing deadline of April 15. Many of us either took advantage of our IRAs last year or we now we wish we had.
