THE FOUR STAGES OF ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENTnby William Cottringe nnn The human potential movement of the early seventies employed a helpful frame of reference to understand the process of interpersonal group development. This model involves four distinct stages of development: ...

rn[ source: http://www.TheSuccessAdmiral.com/blog ] After reading thousands of pages in books, examining hundreds of articles and studies, and comparing many other pieces of excellent information on success, I was able to determine exactly what success is comprised of.
If experience is the greatest teacher, and hindsight is 20/20, then what can be said of observation? Observation is defined as: 1 a: an act or instance of observing a custom, rule, or law b: observance 2 a: an act of recognizing and noting a fact or occurrence often involving measurement with instruments b: a record or description so obtained 3: a judgment on or inference from what one has observed. No matter which definition one may choose, employing the power of observation is a choice. What derails us in this decision making process?
“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” – Confucius They say the only two certainties in life are death and taxes. Well, I think there’s a third…STUDYING! This inescapable fact applies to all of us at some point or another. And even after that final bell has rung or we’ve been awarded a degree, the need to keep learning throughout our lives is a reality we cannot elude.
BEING OKAY WITH BEING AVERAGE Byr Bill Cottringer “Ain’t no man can avoid being born average, but there ain’t no man got to be common. ~Satchel Page. In reality, the great majority of people fall within the “average” range of the so-called Bell Curve.
Listening is such a simple process. One person talks, the other person listens. Or do they? We often confuse hearing with listening. The two are different, though both are done with our ears. Hearing is a natural function of the ear which involves the reception of sound. It's one of your senses.
You do not come across success just by hoping for it. To achieve true success, you need the strength of mind and body to struggle and work hard to reach your fullest potential. You need the right attitude, self-discipline and the ability to put your goal before your own needs, if you are really driven towards reaching success. There is, after all no substitute for hard work, and as Henry Ford says, âThe harder you work, the luckier you getâ â the more successful you get
Definition: 'A Sales Legend is a sales person who stands above the rest. He or She will likely enjoy a great lifestyle, earn more and be less stressed than the rest. They will win, win and win again. They will be loved and recommended by customers. They are virtual team leaders, and well supported.
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." ~Dr. Seuss. Just like glue appearing to be very smooth until you touch it, communication can seem to be that way too, at least until you actually try to undue miscommunication already out on the table. Today we should all be very conce ed that miscommunication is much more prevalent than good communication.
Learning life skills for kids and teens -The Five A’s of Helping Children Learn Accountability
Have you ever felt like people are getting on your last nerve? In one of his most famous poems, "Mending Wall," Robert Frost wrote, "Good fences make good neighbors." Frost's line suggests how essential it is for you to set firm boundaries with others, both personally and professionally, if you want to be successful. Boundaries are integral to your success because they demonstrate how much you value yourself and how much you value others.
“If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” ~ Thomas A. Edison “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Are you dealing with an angry ex? If you have children, have gone through a divorce or separation, and are dealing with a hostile or a non-cooperative parent, you find yourself in a difficult situation where parental alienation is often the result. Ideally, both parents would put aside their personal differences in order to do what's best for the child's emotional health and well-being. Yet, often one parent is filled with unresolved anger, resentment, and hostility towards the other parent. Hopefully, they would address any unresolved issues through therapy rather than acting out.
What is a million dollar thinker, anyway? Million dollar thinkers think about things like money and making decisions in a different way from the average person, using both the conscious and the subconscious mind. As an example: suppose you were $10,000 in debt. The average person would focus on the debt, how to pay it, how to get out of it. They may take on a second job to pay the debt. The focus, no matter what, would be on the debt. A million dollar thinker, on the other hand, would take that same situation and look at it 180 degrees differently.
“Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire.” – Confucius There are a lot of ways to get what you want, some of which are simple and others a little more complex. In this day and age, the principles of persuasion are crucial. We’re often called upon to make arguments and win other people over. And it seems empty charm can only get you so far.
This is an interesting time to be alive. While it seems on the outside like chaos, I am seeing things in a different way. The way I see it, lots of people are getting more of what they really want by getting a big and unexpected push. You might be scratching your head right now and saying to yourself “that gal is crazy – totally nuts”.
As important as it is for children and teenagers to understand these 8 essential principles below – it is far more important that their parents actually know, understand, live and exemplify them before trying to teach them to their kids. 1)What Do Kids Want … That Money Can’t Buy: Our me-oriented culture has engrained into our minds that to show love or appreciation for another person, we must buy them something. As a result, our children’s closets are full, toys are everywhere, and candy is always accessible. And yet, so many children are still not satisfied and happy. Why?
We have all already established an identity. Don’t be afraid to let this identity be up for change. In many instances we find ourselves adapting to situations, almost like being different characters in a play. This gives rise to the many faces of the one person, acting out different roles in different situations, being different things for different people and so often hiding our true Self. Success is not about right or wrong. It’s all about being real.
“Wars teach us not to love our enemies, but to hate our allies.”- W.L. George With so many interactions with so many different people, we’re bound to butt heads every now and then. And if we’re not careful, those conflicts could ruin a great relationship. (We’ve all seen that happen!) But we don’t have to be afraid of these battles because they can be overcome. That’s the message in The Art of War. Sun Tzu’s wisdom is timeless for a reason. “Fury always finds weapons.” – Virgil
SUCCESSFUL SUPERVISION: SEVEN SURE SOLUTIONS Byr Bill Cottringer “You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him discover it within himself.” ~Galileo Galilei.
What You Don't Know Can Hurt You Most. byr Bill Cottringer “There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out.” ~ Russian Proverb. What you don't know about a situation is what usually results in not feeling good about things, especially about the gap between where you actually are and where you really want to be. Quite a lot of that goes with the private business or public government worlds and it is urgent to know how to best deal with this predicament.
TEN SURE WAYS TO SUCCEED IN THE WORKPLACE Byr Bill Cottringer “The best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself without one.” ~Oscar Wilde.
How connecting with the universal energy helps you manifest your dreams. (excerpt from the book The 5 Laws of Conscious Living)
First let's talk about the power of words. Words are so powerful that they have accomplished everything in this world, and they have destroyed everything in this world. Words can start wars, and they can negotiate peace. They can start marriages, and they can destroy marriages. They can start businesses, and they can end businesses. They can start goals, and they can end goals. They can lead to success, and they can undo your success. Words are the color of life. A football team can't run a simple play without huddling up and exchanging words.
Look the part. That's what people from my grandmother's generation used to say. It meant looking like the professionals who belonged to the group that you wanted to be a part of. It also meant carrying yourself, through your demeanor, in a manner that's consistent with the expectations of the role you play in business. Over the years, things have become, in a word, relaxed. Too relaxed for people from my grandmother's generation.
I'm writing you right now from the land of sharp-shooters and high rollers. It's the place where people go for a splash of flash and to live out their dreams of glamour and luxury. Las Vegas! I'll be here for several days attending the Internet Marketing Super Conference. The real reaso I'm ...
Perception determines who we are. Perception is a choice that offers options of how we want to view the world. We can choose to see nothing but a dangerous and frightening world or nothing but a friendly and happy world – or something in between. Whatever way we decide to perceive the world, we will automatically seek out and always find evidence to support our choice. If I decide that life is a struggle, life will do its best to prove me right. If I decide to view life as an exciting adventure, that’s what my life is.
When you are looking to set goals and become successful, there is a key factor that many people miss. What people fail to realize is that their friends may be holding them back from achieving the dreams, goals, or vision they have for their life. You may remember the old birds of a feather saying. Did you know that old saying that birds of a feather flock together has a secret ending? Well, here’s the secret: Birds of a feather flock together, and they all end up in the same place. Take a look around you at the friends you have. Are all of your friends from the same place?
What example have you set? What is your legacy? Will others who stand where you once stood be able to follow your path to success? The chronicle of you is more important than you could ever imagine. To give the gift of hope and inspiration to another is priceless. To empower another person to take control of their destiny is an investment in a better future for all of us. To do this we need to set an example for success. A ‘how to” guide of sorts is required.
The interesting thing about being the only black man, and black person, in an office is that I have this unique opportunity to educate white people about black culture. For me, and many black men in my position, we find that once the initial barrier of resistance is overcome and a right of passage is granted, a competent and professional black man can go about the serious business of shattering stereotypes, representing the entire black race, and engaging in the refined behaviors that engender trust from our colleagues.
Manifesting has become a popular buzzword within the metaphysical community and with “The Secret” being so popular, it has made its way into more of the mainstream. What does it mean to you? Making your dream a reality? Yes, absolutely. But, how – that’s the question. Lots of people would like to find the answer. We aren’t all born knowing exactly how to achieve results in our lives.
Get past the honeymoon phase in everything that you do. The honeymoon phase - I see it day in and day out in many of my businesses. If you're renting a home to somebody, whoever you're renting to is always a nice person in the beginning. They always have the best of intentions. A couple of months later, they stop paying the rent. The honeymoon is over. It's the same when I'm training martial arts students. When I have a brand new student, they want to know everything. They stay late to ask questions. They've got that white belt on, and this is the coolest thing they've ever done.
Worrying feeds fears and doubts. Worrying wastes time and consumes energy. Worrying weakens ambition and breeds inaction. Worrying will cripple our confidence, faith, and ability to reason. Worrying kills the ability to think big and reveals an inability to control one’s thoughts. Worrying is the first step towards failure and limits our potential. And yet, ironically, worrying is at times necessary, can be a protection, and is found within everybody. Unfortunately, the ability to discipline and train the mind how to stop worrying is found in so few, and yet, it is so important.
Do you sometimes feel like your life is filled with perspiration rather than inspiration? You're working, working, and working some more, but nothing seems to get done and you seem to be going nowhere. It's like you're stopped in traffic on the interstate of your life. If you're like me, you're pounding on the horn, riding the tail of the car in front of you, and using some unsavory or downright ugly language in your impatience to get a move on. There may be no evidence of exte al movement in your life but the engine in your car is still running and things are still in motion.
Over the years it's come to my attention that people - educated, accomplished, or just highly opinionated - tend to be very generous in giving advice. They mean well, for the most part, but they often don't weigh the outcome of their generosity. Advice, like food, tastes better when one is hungry for it. Ever try and feed a baby or a child when they are not hungry? Compare that to feeding both when they have sufficient hunger. The difference is stark. The former will make them seem undesirous.
“If thou wilt make a man happy, add not unto his riches but take away from his desires.” – Epicurus I’m sure you’ve heard how important it is to pay yourself first. But do you? Are you making provision for the future in order to achieve your personal goals? If not, it’s probably time you started. Paying yourself first means automatically having a certain amount deducted from your income. That needs to happen before you even see it so you’re not tempted to spend.
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” – Lao Tzu The biggest part about dealing with stress is about dealing with our emotions. Most of us are so afraid of what we feel even though that shouldn’t be the case. There’s no such thing as a “bad” emotion. All emotions are simply signals telling us something needs to change. And we need to listen to these signals before the problems we have get worse. It all comes down to three things: 1. Breathe
Courage: from Anglo-French, coer heart. A quality of mind or spirit (heart) that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, without fear. I had done a five day intensive retreat with twenty-five, Youth at Risk on the coast of England. The course had been an amazing experience for everyone and I had been invited back to England to give a one-day seminar on how to deal with difficult emotions, particularly anger. Many of the youth had “anger issues,” a term I particularly dislike because it labels people in a negative direction and segments anger out of our everyday world.
Napoleon Hill's writings only talked about a part of the Law of Success. Everything he says is true, however it's not the whole story. To understand how the law worked for the ultra successful men in his book, we have to look at why the law worked for them.
The first and most important step to attaining elusive dreams is to know and believe that they are indeed attainable. A shift in your mindset must take place in order to have and hold the things you want most, but feel are out of reach. The key to this shift in mindset is to remove self imposed limitations. It does not matter what other people think of your abilities. What matters is whether or not you choose to believe them. If there is something that you feel is out of your reach it is because you have decided to place it out of your reach.
It is imperative that we understand our internal reasons for wanting to help another person. Many talk about the building of relationships through the volunteering of time or resources. If it is your intention to help another because of the potentially fruitful relationship that may result you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Allowing self serving agendas to be a driving factor in whether or not you help another person is not true relationship building. It is strategic helping and not true giving.
Two common phrases used to describe the impact a person has are “your words speak volumes” and “your silence is deafening”. However, the opposite is true as well. Silence speaks volumes. Inaction and the unspoken evoke results in the same ways as spoken words and actions. It is often more challenging to engage in inaction and to allow yourself to view a situation from the outside.
“Life is too short for traffic.” – Dan Bellack Isn’t it amazing how inspiration can find you anywhere? My latest bout came while I was walking to the gym. It made me wonder this: what road sign are you? No Stopping
"I can't say I was ever lost, but I was bewildered once for three days." â Daniel Boone, American frontiersman and pioneer Many team and organization change and improvement efforts are lost or badly bewildered. Decades of studies have consistently shown that 50â70 percent are failing. There are as many reasons that improvement endeavors lose their way, as there are people, teams, and organizations trying to improve. Some change and improvement efforts have been hugely suc
Success does not mean that every situation we encounter will result in monetary, personal or social gain, or whatever perception of ‘success’ we may have. It means that, even where the situation doesn’t look like it’s working out, we recognise the opportunity for a successful learning process and it does not become an attack or an endorsement of separation, isolation and fear. You don’t have to buy into that ete al loop of Self-criticism, Self-doubt, fear and removal from the truth. Instead, whatever the outcome, use every situation as a learning opportunity.
SHRINKING FROWNS AND EXPANDING SMILES Byr Bill Cottringer “A smile cures the wounding of a frown.” ~William Shakespeare. Here are ten practical ways to reduce your unhappy failures and boost your happy successes, curing your frowns with smiles: 1. Follow the reality principle.
REALITY REPAIR: TIME, SWEAT, TEARS & NO PROMISES OF SOMETHING FOR NOTHING Byr Bill Cottringer “You don't get something for nothing; You can't have freedom for free; You won't get wiser With the sleep still in your eyes No matter what your dreams might be.”rn~Neil Peart. Shame on us all!
Untapped Strategies for Success in Today's Market "Desperate times require desperate measures" I overheard someone say the other day. I was standing in line to order my late afte oo Latte at a well-known coffee establishment and the buzz in the room wasn't from the caffeine, it was from the customer chat.
Much has been written on what it takes to win the game of life. A lifetime of experience says it’s not as complicated as most people make it. Here’s my list. Take what you want. 1. You can’t succeed alone. Every story of success is a story of people working together, each contributing their own unique talents, skillsets and abilities. Do what you do best. And let others fill in the gaps. 2. Perseverance always wins. You can’t fail if you don’t quit. Find yet another way to make it work. Whatever *it* is for you.
"Customer is king", "Our customers are not strangers to us, they are part of what we do". These are common cliches we speak and write on the walls of our businesses and in reception area. The question which is rarely asked is "Do we mean all that we say?". When you customer coughs, your company performances feels the threat of that cold. The tremors and challenges your customer faces have a direct bearing on your profits and your targets. Once you obtain a customer, they should be kept lest they move on to the next supplier.
Criticism is tough for most people. When we are criticized, we often develop a reaction to what is being said which makes us feel as though we are under attack. It's only natural to impulsively defend one's self under such circumstances. Granted, some criticisms are malicious and unwarranted, but all of them are not without merit.
Are You A Worry Wort? Byr William Cottringer, Ph.D. “You know you are in big trouble when you start worrying about how much you are worrying.” ~ The Author.
“When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: ‘Whose?’”- Don Marquis Isn’t the property market absolutely amazing right now? No, I’m not being sarcastic nor was this written years ago. With so many bargains around (and interest rates finally coming down), now is the perfect time to take advantage. Obviously you have to be smart about what you do, but fortunately there are great resources like Rich Dad’s Success Stories by Robert Kiyosaki and Making Money out of Property in South Africa by Jason Lee. They suggest the following: 1. Get prepared
Inside each person, there exists untapped potential for creativity. Creativity does not just refer to skills like being able to paint, write eloquently, or make beautiful music; creativity merely refers to unique thinking. For example, if you are using different and new ways of finding a solution to a problem, you are being creative. Below are some ways to uncover your potential for creativity: 1. Do Things That Bring You Joy. It is possible you've already thought about what
Be honest. Have you been obsessing about all the reasons why you're not prosperous? Maybe you're thinking over how you just lost your job, your stock retirement savings plummeted, you contracted a life threatening illness, or your bipolar ex-spouse spent your last dime and left you in the street, crooning country songs off-key. Whatever you're replaying over and over in your mind, there is one thing that can never be taken away from you--unless you are abducted by aliens I suppose--and that is your MIND POWER!
We all have influence over our options and in turn, our options give us influence. It is not others who give us options, it is ourselves. We have the power to enable possibilities within our minds. “Practical” and “rational” are the enemies of this type of internal empowerment. They are self limiting concepts that must be removed before we can bask in the beauty of optional influence. When we make choices and establish preference, we are directing our energy to certain things rather than others. It is the consorted energetic effort that will yield results in our favor.
Want to hear something shocking? According to Indexcreditcards.com, the average American is carrying $4,013 in revolving (mostly credit card) debt and the average household is carrying $7,861 of such debt. Now keep in mind that about 25% of American households have no credit cards, which means the amount of average debt for credit card holding households is at least $10,000. This, my friend, is a fiasco! There is no way I can be delicate about this.
Never deny your own value, no matter what experiences you have had so far. Your value is an immeasurable gift to give yourself for the future, starting in the present. It really is one of the most outstanding conditions of what you are. It is here you will gain total freedom of what you can be. The willingness to be there for your self is so important. Where you go to find yourself is up to you. We all need to look with sincerity at the things we do and the things we don’t do in our lives and then have the realisation that we can change our minds as to how we see the world.r
"Organizations should be built and managers should be functioning so people can be naturally empowered. If someone's doing their job...they should know their job better than anybody. They don't need to be 'empowered,' but encouraged and left alone to be able to do what they know best." â Henry Mintzberg, management researcher and author Joel views himself as a "realist." As a manager, he has little time or patience for, as he puts it, "making nicey-nicey." Coming from a dee
“You can resist an invading army; you cannot resist an idea whose time has come.” – Victor Hugo 4. Generating Ideas So, now that you’ve decided to get into the entrepreneurship game, how do you come up with that great idea? Well, there is no magic formula when it comes to that but a few things do help. Another suggestion from Robert Kiyosaki is to keep your eyes open and always stay alert for key pieces of information. Carry around a notebook wherever you go in order to jot down ideas on problems to solve or needs to fill.
Parents are well-acquainted with excuses and reasons. After all, they get exposed to plenty of them while raising their children. Some children become adept at making excuses from the time they learn to talk. Left unchecked, the pattern becomes habit forming and lingers into adulthood. It also prevents children from becoming responsible adults. The difference between adults and children is that adults possess cognitive (reasoning) skills that children do not. Poor cognitive skills produce an immature thought process.
What are your dreams? We each have them, and they literally shape our thoughts and hopes. But, do you actually believe your dreams are possible? The unfortunate reality for most of us is that our dreams remain only as thoughts and wishes and never convert into actions. Ask yourself this important question – are you planning on making your dreams a reality someday … or are you actually doing something now to accomplish them? The great Og Mandino said it so well when he wrote: “My dreams are worthless, my plans are dust, my goals are impossible.
Each of us is exposed to and bombarded by – on a daily basis – an evil that is extremely enticing and appealing, so selfishly gratifying (temporarily), so unavoidably addictive, and so incredibly damaging to our thoughts, lives, families, and society.
There is a part of all of us that is beyond every problem, doubt, worry or loss and is, in essence, the true and universal embodiment of success. It is here we dispense with limitation and start the journey of experiencing the truth of what we are and can be. This is the part that is never tarnished by life’s experiences, that is the essence of who you are. It is from this source that all our dreams and purpose emanates. The shadows of life can sometimes obscure this golden place but can never obliterate the beauty of it.
Perseverance in life is an essential quality if one is to realize their goals and achieve success. In a nutshell, perseverance is the act of persisting to do something in spite of challenges, obstacles and disappointments. Whatever endeavors you pursue, when armed with the virtue of perseverance your success is almost guaranteed. Unfortunately, many people rob themselves of any success because they do not have the perseverance to see their goals through. However developing pe
1. Do something creative. 2. Learn something new - about work or life. 3. Read a biography of a leader who intrigues you. 4. Give yourself think time as well as dream time. 5. Review and update job descriptions for yourself and everybody around you - schedule any and all meetings necessary to get them into their best shape and then schedule regular future meetings to review if you don't regularly review job descriptions already. 6. Ask yourself the $5 million question: If I could put $5 million behind my best idea, what would I make happen?r
It is very important to be able to lead a balanced life if you are to be successful and happy. In our quest to be successful we tend to lose the ability to lead a balanced life. Our family, friends and community ends up competing for our attention. Your spiritual needs are as important (if not more important) than the success you desire. If you maintain a healthy balance between all the important areas of your life, you will have a very strong foundation to work from. To dete
Modern business world is ever changing, more competitive and requiring individuals who will stand and be counted as leaders above others. When you stand head and shoulders above your own colleagues, employers will rush for you, business will come your way, your department will win all the prizes for good performance. As a professional in your own area of endeavor, know that your attitudes and attributes facilitate the well being of your subordinates. This has a direct impact on the altitude the company's vision will rise to. Do business like your entire life relies on it.
WRONG PERCEPTIONS CAN BE LETHAL By Bill Cottringe n“You are only as wise as others perceive you to be” ~M. Shawn Colenn It would be amusing if it weren’t for the destructiveness that wrong perceptions of people and situations can cause. What is amusing is that we are convinced of the truth ...

There is a saying in life, I do not know who wrote it, and I do can search it online but that will drain away the fun of anonymity. It starts like this âNo one can discriminate your character unless you want it to be discriminatedâ. rnCharacter assassination is a concept that most of us go through our school life, university life or work life. The fact is that no one can change that and remember this; everyone in this world has been characterized assassinated once in his
I know them. You know them too: People who are always late. It seems like no matter what the situation or event, they just can't seem to be on time. Some use a litany of excuses to justify their chronic tardiness, but the worse offenders are not only comfortable with being consistently late, but expect you to be accepting of their impunctuality as well. Not only is their behavior selfish, it's also disrespectful. People who are always late rob us of the most precious and valuable commodity that we own: our time.
Diversity is important in all areas of life. A great financial portfolio has a diverse set of assets so it can profit in any financial environments. A great carpenter carries a diverse set of tools so every construction need can be met. A great business employs a diverse group of people who ...

Want a crash course in how shy men act around someone they like? Put yourself in their shoes. Think of a time that you felt shy yourself. How did it feel? How did you react? Shy people often have trouble making eye contact. They may tend to look down at their feet more than extroverts. Perhaps they get tongue-tied and don't know what to say. This is just how shy men act around women they like sometimes.
rnIt occurs to me that whenever I would say that I am proud, people would look at me and shake their heads. Once, I was even accused of being proud as if it was a bad thing.rnBut that is not necessarily the case. There are two sides of pride, one of which is an extreme negative feeling that people who lack need it in order to feel better. That side of which is damaging is the main base of racism.rnYet again, pride is not as bad as many people claim it to be. Pride should be b
Self Mastery, alone, sounds like a selfish term; but if you cannot help yourself, you will have limited ability to help others. In order for you to change the world around you, for the better, you have to change yourself for the better, along the way.nnYou cannot
Many of us spend our days traveling from one high-pressure environment to another, "putting out fires" and dealing with issues, before we arrive at the end of the day and wonder where all the time went. We live a life that is determined by custom and conformity. In truth, we don't really know how to measure whether we are being successful or not in real terms, even though we may often measure ourselves against the performance of our peers, close friends or family. You may say
