There are lots of resources online to assist with anger management. But how can you tell if some of the things you find online are actually helpful in controlling anger? While the range of good advice can vary quite a bit you’ll find that the vast majority of good anger management articles contain common themes. First, most sound advice will include a reminder that anger is a normal, healthy human emotion. It’s our responses to anger that can sometimes be a problem.
At the beginning of every new year millions of adults make resolutions to improve some aspect of their life: quit smoking, lose weight, save more money, spend time with family and friends. Though well-intentioned, few actually follow through and achieve their desired degree of success. While each of these goals are beneficial in their own right, on some level they fall short of what is truly most important in life. One who is able to quit smoking, for example, yet continually fights with their spouse has not made the more important improvement.
Why we need angernnWhy do we need anger? Consider the following reasons.n• To protect our rights n• To help us maintain an individual identitynn • To ward off those who are bent on preying on the weak n• To moralize against social injustice n• As a warning signal that our rights are being violatedn • To remind us of the things that we hold most dear n• To be used as a tool to protect not to destroy or hurt n• To at times protect
They're like mosquitoes on a hot summer night - those irritating and annoying people. They can be found anywhere from our families or coworkers to drivers on the roadways to complete strangers we encounter while on vacation. Their quirky behaviors and annoying habits can ruin our day. Other than blow up, walk away, or simply endure their lack of sensitivity towards others, we often feel powerless to do anything about it.
I've been presenting seminars on healing anger for twenty years and it never ceases to amaze me how much misinformation is circulating about one of life's most powerful emotion. I've decided it is time to debunk some of the most common myths. So without further ado, let me begin with... Myth #1. Anger is a bad emotion. It's wrong to get angry.r
By definition the word judgment suggests: an act or instance of judging. It also states – forming an opinion, estimate, notion, or conclusion. Opinions are listed as: a personal view, attitude, or appraisal with a belief that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. No one ever says things like, “Oh being judged feels good!” So if judging causes us and/or others to feel bad, we are creating stress for ourselves. Our judgment(s) of another is actually our judgment of our self. Believe it or not… “How we see the world, is how we see our self!”
Do you see yourself as a winner? If by chance you answered 'No' to this question, it reveals a lot about your self-esteem. By responding ‘No’ prevents you from winning. If you if you think you can’t…, you can’t. Thinking in this manner is limited. Limited thinking makes it difficult for us to succeed in achieving our goals. ‘No’ equates to both, ‘I can’t’ and ‘I won’t.’ Winning equals, “I CAN!” Winning is a great demonstration of the power that we have available within us. When we see ourselves as being a winner, we are able to achieve anything.
Just like any coin with a face on it, our own facesâindeed, our identitiesâhave what is called a âface value.â When people see us they form opinions, feelings and sometimes even judgments. Most people will not make such a judgment upon first meeting us. However, when there is an altercation between two or more people and an experience is shared, rest assured some judgments are being made. Have you ever reacted in anger or in emotion and ruined a friendship? Has someth
As Carol Tavris writes in her landmark work “there does not seem to be a clear understanding of the phenomena we call Anger” (Tavris, 1989). She continues “the harder we try to pin down one explanation the more certain we are to fail.” She argues, “Anger is like beauty, as it is in the eye of the beholder”.
Last week I spoke to a group of employees at a manufacturing company. The topic was “Dealing With Really B~A~D* People”. No one is immune to these “challenging” individuals. They appear in our place of employment, our communities, our churches and most unfortunately our families. I’m no exception.
More on Happiness: Myth… Fiction…or Fate! What is your belief of what happiness really is? Is happiness some sort of myth or fictional reality that we only get to experience for brief periods of time and then it disappears? Is happiness only available to us for limited times? More and more folks are coming to understand “what happiness is” and where real happiness can be found. Folks are discovering that real happiness truly exists and is available to everyone. Yes folks now know that they too can easily live a life filled with happiness, without sorrow.
The Truth About Anger.nnEver wonder what anger is really all about? Ever wonder why it is that some people just get under your skin? Ever wonder why you seem to have the shortest fuse with those people you love the most? nnWell ¡KI have pondered all of these questions. Yes, sometimes because of my own ¡§fits¡¨ of being less than I want to be. And sometimes because of a strong unexpected blast of someone¡¦s anger directed at me¡Kanger so strong if you could harness it
In college, one of my philosophy professors would frequently have the class debate a hot topic. He'd randomly divide the class in half and have each side present their best argument in support of their assigned position. Regardless of how you felt personally, you were expected to gather as many facts as possible to present the strongest argument. It was actually quite stimulating as it challenged us to be willing to see the issue from every possible perspective. This lesson has served me well in life as I have always tried to view a subject matter from all sides.
Changing how we feel about the past can only occur if we begin taking responsibility for what we were holding in mind. The good news is we can change how we feel about any situation. Instead of struggling to change the past, a better way to move forward is to begin directing our attention on having positive and successful outcomes. Having abundance; and positively achieving our goals. In choosing to hold in mind what we would really like to achieve, always allows for better outcomes. By holding in mind positive intentions, also helps to realign our focus towards goodness and abundance.
Life is a decision. You decide. You decide to be happy. You decide to be unhappy. You decide to be wealthy. You decide to struggle and live in lack. You decide,” I am going to be positive and loving.” In the world of victimhood, the world happens to you and there isn’t anything you can do about It. You’ve the been dealt the cards and you have to live with it.
Letting go of perceived bad habits is the result of making better decisions. By understanding ‘how and why’ we act in the ways that we do is deciding to get bigger than our fear. In deciding to overcome the habit of protecting ourselves with fear empowers us to be free of perceived bad habits. How much longer are you willing to remain overweight? How much longer are you going to tolerate that smoking or swearing habit? Notice no one can make these decisions for you.
“When there are problems, if we would love more, they would disappear. When the love is complete, the problem dissolves immediately!” ~ Lester Levenson
"One of my coworkers is so annoying! She's always making personal calls when she's supposed to be working. Then when she can't finish her work she asks me for help!"
Article Contributed by Jenny LaFontaine Lester says that “Love is the answer”. It took me awhile to really experience what he meant and even as I write this more is unfolding. My jou ey along the way may be of help to you. I did not have any idea how to love myself. I had done numerous self-development courses and even self-esteem trainings before I came to The Release Technique, but looking back on it I can see that I actually had resistance to really loving myself – it just wasn’t ‘done’ to love yourself.r
Anger has become one of the most intimate issues in today's world . With unemployment at an all time high nationally , and the stress of current life in American becoming incredibly stressful , Americans are turning to rage . Anger is often a bi-product of other more primitive emotions such as fear, depression, anxiety or stress.
I recently saw a banner — set in place for Recovery Month — that read: “Recovery Happens.” My question is: “What is implied here?” Words have meaning, and when those words are demonstrative of a process to behavioral change, people either simply disregard, are motivated by, or are intimidated by what they perceive and think about the process. For this, I call for a Matter of Perspective. Matter of Perspective: My Perspectiver
Getting seriously injured can be scary. Dealing with physical and emotional pain, helping your family cope, and then trying to come to grips with what just happened can stretch you thin. Relationships can become strained and money can run tight. Chances are that if youâve just been in a serious accident, and it was someone elseâs fault, youâll be contacted by their insurance agency. You might even find the insurance agency very interested in getting you a settlement. Wh
Sixteen years ago, I moved to a quiet dead-end street. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that I lived near a teenage heavy metal band! As day turned to evening, my silent haven was interrupted by the sound of innocent drums and guitars being tortured!rn.r
Treating depression naturally.... One of the reasons people might prefer to deal with it this way is because they hate to take medication. Others may have tried this medication before and found it did not work or it had bad side effects. It is also a good idea to take natural things because then you know that any symptoms you have are caused by the illness and are not a side effect of something you are taking in the hope of shifting it. Some anti depressants can cause you to
How can anger management help you to deal with frustration? While anger is a common enough emotion that usually arises as a result of a frustrating situation, it can become a problem when an individual is no longer able to control themselves, resulting in outbursts and worse. Such individuals are said to have anger management problems which can lead to degradation of existing relationships while alienating the possibility of new ones. Most anger management issues can be attributed to immaturity on the individual's part arising from feelings such as entitlement or jealousy.
Anger management techniques are important because one of the most destructive forms of emotion in anybody's life is anger. Unfortunately, when a person becomes overloaded with stress, anxiety starts to kick in as well. Once all of this occurs, it becomes very easy to get angry, even if it is for the most insignificant reasons. While everyone loses it now and then, there are some people that suffer from uncontrollable rage, and when this occurs, the consequences can be devastating for anyone who happened to be in the path of that hurricane of emotion.
We live in a holographic Universe where everything reveals itself in patterns. Our life relationships may exhibit negative patterns. These are usually the biggest stresses in our lives, and the hardest to overcome. They keep repeating themselves, until they cause too much pain and we feel that ...
Effectively communicating with others can present enough challenges without the added issue of one who twists and distorts your words. Below is a transcript of a recent conversation I had with someone (who refers to himself as a member of the black race) on facebook. He posted the controversial chant "Black Lives Matter" in an attempt to garner support against the recent shootings of black men by white cops.(My posts are preceded by the initials JP.)
I read advice columns. I sometimes find valuable information that benefits me or I can pass along to others. At times I shake my head in awe at the nonsensical issues people seek advice about, like the biggest debate ever in Dear Abby’s history: which is the correct way to hang a roll of toilet paper - paper across the top or unde eath? Really? This is what people are conce ed with?
It seems like almost everyone has some ideas related to time management. And realistically most of us are still not sure how to consistently manage our time. How about instead of managing our time, that we choose to make better use of our time?! Perhaps you might agree, that when we are in enjoyment of what we are doing, time seems unlimited. And when we are uncomfortable, struggling, or rushing for any reason, we are creating time challenges for ourselves. So what this suggests is when we are in the energy or awareness of enjoyment, there appears to be more time available to us.
Women can become a slave to their tempers if they do not deal with what is bothering them. Getting mad is a natural emotion all men and women experience, but handled in the wrong way could lead to many unhealthy habits. Learning a few anger management techniques will help you to lower your blood pressure and improve your relationships at home and the office.
My anger management group is no place for the weak. While I am very compassionate and respectful, I have zero tolerance for denial, blame, self-pity and the like. Monday night was no exception.
Releasing is letting go of our mental garbage, our mental viruses which block our abundance and happiness. Our mental garbage consists of our negative feelings. Put simply, releasing is about letting go of negative feelings. Negative feelings block us from being the positive, loving, abundant, happy being that we naturally are.
None of us likes to admit it although that at times we compare ourselves to others. This habit of comparing ourselves to others is usually a negative trait. We have a tendency to overlook our own incredible accomplishments and mistakenly believe others are in some ways more fortunate…, more successful…, more educated… etc.
Surviving infidelity is never easy, no matter how forgiving any couple may be. Adultery remains the worst offense that any spouse can commit against his partner, since it is a direct assault upon every single principle of the marriage union. In many cases, the offended spouse is so wounded that she can barely stand to be close to her partner. It's no wonder so many instances of adultery lead directly to divorce.
Not having love is driving you half crazy isn’t it? You don’t have love and you don’t know what to do about it. You’ve got all this anger. You’ve got all this fear. You’re not getting any younger are you? What it’s about, this not being able to get love? It’s making you nuts. You’re losing sleep over it. You’re worrying about it. It’s keeping you negative most of the time. What else could you say about it? You’re frustrated about love.
If you don't know where, you're going, how are you supposed to get there? Obvious, isn't it? It's obvious all right but few actually have an intention for everything they do. Do you have an intention for everything you do? Do you start your day and spell out for yourself your intention for your day and each of your day's activities? Do you ever get to the end of your day or your week, look back and say, I sure didn’t get much accomplished today or this week?r
There are a variety of reasons a person may become angry. In previous articles, I have discussed the primary feelings that result in anger and the high expectations one may have, which result in disappointment and subsequent anger. I now want to introduce how a person’s belief system can cause a great deal of anger, which is based on the work of Albert Ellis. What are your beliefs? Which ones do you hold dear? Which beliefs do you have that do not serve you anymore—or even cause you harm? A belief is something that you hold to be true.
There's no doubt: anger takes its toll on every facet of our lives. From on the job, to our personal relationships, to our health and overall enjoyment of life, destructive anger can wreak havoc in our daily lives.
Conflict and fighting are not synonymous. Although they very often go hand-in-hand, disagreements need not end up as arguments, fights, or physical altercations. A conflict is simply two forces in opposition: a husband and wife disagree on where to spend their vacation; you support the Republican party, your friend is a staunch Democrat; best friends listen to radically different music. Conflict can actually be a very positive force in our lives as it introduces us to new ideas, new possibilities, and the opportunity to learn and expand our world.
I abhor arguing. It's a waste of precious time and energy and robs me of my serenity. Conflict, however, is horse of another color. Conflict occurs daily in each of our lives. It simply means that there is a disagreement, a difference of opinion. My husband and I engage in disputes on a regular basis yet interestingly enough have had fewer than five arguments in our eighteen year marriage. Unlike popular opinion, conflict is not synonymous with fighting. I'm willing to engage in a discussion but will never allow it to escalate into a battle.
Families can be our greatest source of joy as well as a never ending cause of stress. Comprised of a diverse blend of personalities, families are a mixture of quirky behaviors, opposing viewpoints, various needs, beliefs, and values, along with opposing methods of how members perform certain tasks. Being unskilled at even the most basic aspects of resolving conflicts, as most of us are, can result in minor differences escalating our stress levels and causing tempers to flare.
Anger makes Zane protest and refuse to work hard Zane was furious when he didn’t get his pay raise. He remembered all the times his boss gave him signs that his efforts would be rewarded. Was that a dream? Did he misread the signals? How could he be so easily fobbed off with a few sweet words?
Over fifty percent of marriages end in divorce and a large number of these splits are due to cheating spouses. It used to be the dreaded seven-year itch where a spouse would become bored and start looking for excitement outside the marriage, but now recent evidence shows this boredom is occurring even sooner. It has now become the dreaded three-year itch. Couples are becoming bored shortly after the nuptials and this can lead to an affair.
Aggressive behavior - many believe it is a sign of power, self-confidence, and courage. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Last week the country witnessed the termination of Rutgers University head basketball coach, Mike Rice. Video surfaced of his mean-spirited treatment of his players during practice. From name-calling to shoving, grabbing to gay slurs, his actions received nation-wide criticisms resulting in his dismissal.
