written by Neal Dranoff In early Spring 2009, I read an on-line article published on MSN.com written by John W. Schoen, entitled “Boomers Face Stark Choices in Bleak Economy.” I felt the piece was so acutely on-point in terms of clarity and my personal situation at the time that I composed a rather lengthy email to Mr. Schoen praising him for his efforts. Mr. Schoen’s article is part of a series called Reinventing America. While I’ve provided you a link to his piece, I’ll list the salient points in broad brushstrokes for you:
If you believe you can do it, you can. If you believe you can’t, you won’t. How do you see your reflection? Is it distorted in the ripples of a wave? Is it clear as in a quiet body of water? Is it completely opposite as in looking at a mirror? How you see yourself in relation to your world predicts how you will behave and perform in your daily routines.
For the last few months, we’ve been talking about the transformation from the “Type A” to the “Type R” personality; the “R” standing for “recreative” in the dynamic, formative sense. Our thesis is that modern Americans, upon retirement, have unprecedented opportunities to craft a new “self”. We can construct renovated lives that enable us to plunge into a future we shape for ourselves, full of learning, fulfillment, fun and—profit.
Departing the “Single/Never Married” demographic group and entering the “Married” category didn’t occur for me until I was one month shy of my 36th birthday. This tidbit holds importance for two reasons: I dated for 18 years before meeting my wife, and I can honestly say I was ready to marry when the big day arrived.

Courage has many aspects, not just bravery in acute situations such as warfare or protecting others (or yourself) from harms way. Courage includes the ability to speak up and act in a way that honors your values and self-respect, even when you are afraid to do so. Courage often involves asking yourself to do something that is uncomfortable.
The process of the sequential appearance of teeth in a child is known as teething. Indian Academy of Pediatrics stated that infants can begin teething period anytime between 4 to 12 months. The infants develop 20 milk teeth in the first three years of their life. As soldiers train for battle, performers hone their talents for audiences, doctors train for the healing arts and citizens sharpen skills for the trades, I believe we are all, in every life’s situation and circumstance, preparing for the highlights of our lives and the agonizing challenges that confront us on our jou eys. With my husband now facing cancer, one that responds well to treatment but by far the most painful beyond excruciating, I am becoming aware we are not in lack of the tools we need to face this hideous beast.
You are thinking of purchasing an ergonomic chair. Well done! The decision to think ergonomic means you want to take care of your skeletal joints, so that you suffer fewer discomforts as you age. My knowledge as a qualified Occupational Therapist, along with an M.Sc in Health Promotion is proof that my focus is support, safety and prevention. I also have a congenital back disorder, which means that I practise what I preach! Let’s start with what is an ergonomic chair? The word ergo is Latin for ‘work’, so it describes the purpose of the chair.
written by Sue Susskind With Father’s Day approaching, it gives us time to reflect on the wonderful life that we lead, and how much of it that we owe to our dads. We realize it is now time to give back, and make sure we do everything we can to ensure that Dad enjoys and stays safe in his “Golden Years.”
written by A.T. "Al" Benelli, CFP, FIC It is often said that the three most important factors in real estate are location, location, location. I assume the person who created this idiom was trying to impress upon all the belief that nothing else matters much. Location trumps all other factors. Well, if you believe that to be true, then in the world of investing the three most important actions may just be diversify, diversify, diversify!
A Red Cross Responder’s Notes from the Monument Fire, Arizona Since the fire people have asked what life in a shelter looks like. The following is my take.
Taking your 50’s in their stride. Most people have a fear of aging so by the time they reach 50 many are quite paranoid when they need not be. As a matter of fact if you have the right attitude and desire your fifties could be some of the best years of your life. By this time you don’t usually have as many hang ups as you did when you were younger. You have learned that so many of the things that used to bother you no longer do. You are more willing to let things go.
Studies have shown, as we age, we tend to be less active. We become more prone to illness, which can lead to inactivity. It can become a vicious cycle. This article is a guideline only, and not intended to replace your doctor’s recommendations. Always consult with your doctor before engaging in any new type of physical activity. Problems Related to Inactivity
Written by: Jan Brehm So I’m wondering, do you ever… …think about the phrase “Wisdom Comes With Age” and wonder who made that up and what were they talking about??? With the definition of wisdom being: “Accumulated knowledge of life or in a particular sphere of activity that has been gained through experience”, here are just a few profoundly impacting mid-life tidbits of wisdom I have accumulated through my life’s experiences thus far: * If everyone looks younger than you it’s because they are.
written by Bob Schulman Is a Martian spaceport? A movie set from Star Wars? An outdoor museum of modern art? Whatever it is, you’d hardly expect to run across a place like this in a two-thousand-year-old Spanish seaport on the Mediterranean. Visitors to Valencia usually expect to find a town packed with remnants of the days when it was ruled by Roman emperors, Visigoth princes, Moorish caliphs and Christian kings. And that’s exactly what you’ll see, including a cathedral displaying a chalice some believe to be the Holy Grail.

Stress conce s us all and is a major cause of disease today. Our first name is the essence of who we are. Our last name shows how our environment affects us. It is within our middle name that indicates how we deal with stress. So, how does your name handle stress? Let’s look at some of the indicators or letters in the middle name. What is stated below works only when these letter combinations in the middle name as they are interpreted differently in the first or last name.
It has often been said that, “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” Whether you are networking, interviewing for a job or meeting new colleagues for the first time, here are some guidelines to keep in mind which will make a good first impression. Be mindful of the other person’s time. Ask if this is a good time for them before proceeding into the discussion (or identify another time that would be better). When attending a scheduled meeting or interview, ask how much time the other person has, and hold to that timeframe.
One of the most painful realities for dementia caregivers is the loss of recognition. As memory erodes, the patient loses the ability to recognize those most dear to them—spouse, children, siblings. Michelle Bourgeois, a speech-pathology professor at Ohio State University has come up with a system that allows caregivers to bridge that communications gap, at least temporarily. She advises caregivers to use flash cards to help ease those identity issues and answer the questions which dementia patients will repeat endlessly.
It seems likely that humans, and even some other species of mammals, have consoled others forever in history with food and other comfort at times of loss and grief. There have been many long standing traditions and examples throughout history and in many diverse cultures of this custom. This has been so common in the past that we even developed a term for the practice…”comfort food” although the term has been given a different spin today.
Written by Debbie Nichols When I wrote my book “Deployed Grandparents being Parents “, I thought it would be originally for my family. As I was writing the story my friends would ask me, “Why don’t you share it with others?”My friends and family inspired me to share my story, so once I completed the story I offered it to the public.
written by Neal Dranoff Being a 50 plus male and having “been around the block” a few times engenders a requisite amount of seasoning. By this age, naiveté has pretty much flown out the window and we feel like life has few surprises left to offer. Even devoid of having personally experienced a given situation, we’re so bombarded with others’ tales through our profusion of media outlets that we at least think we can easily wrap our hands around a remedy should we ever find ourselves as a principal. Or so I thought…
Ergonomic chairs are designed for enabling people to remain comfortable when performing work or employment based activities in an ergonomic chair. Postural comfort does not come naturally. It comes from learning to create movement in your pelvic region, so that tissues in your buttocks remain comfortable. Movement is needed in your pelvic region, because it is not humanly possible to sit all day in one position. Your body forces you to move your pelvic area at least every twelve minutes.
Written By: Angelena Craig Boomers, those in their 50’s and 60’s do not want to think about getting old, no way…and for good reasons. Aging has been thought of as synonymous with dread, disease, decline, disablement and finally death. But what if, instead of tip toeing into the elders years, looking over our shoulders to make sure no one has noticed, what if we could embrace one more developmental stage we, the living, all go through?
“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.” Ralph Nichols From that quote you probably already know where I am going with this. Today’s topic is about listening. Not about the way you listen now, but the way that you could be listening to your spouse or love.

As Temps Rise, Nuclear Families Take a Dive – Estate Planning for Unconventional Families Has Never Been More Important Among the many articles covering the blazing heat wreaking havoc on my beloved DC metro area as well as much of the U.S., was an interesting piece in a recent edition of The Washington Post on nuclear families. According to the article, new census figures show that marriage rates across the nation have plunged, while the number of unmarried partners with children has soared. Too Hot to Handle
Most people grasp how crucial it is for children to not miss out on their childhood, but we often forget that it is equally crucial to not miss out on all of life, be it adolescence, middle age, old age, single life, married life, parenthood, or any other phase. Every stage is an incredible gift that must not be wasted or compromised in any way.rn rnWhether you believe we live one or many lives, it always starts with birth and infancy, then childhood and so forth. If we are l
Written by: Jan Brehm It’s not just the menopause and all its uninvited symptoms that has me all gnarled up like some impossible yoga position, at almost 56 years old I often am accompanied by a myriad of sadness, joy, guilt and relief and I know there is no way to avoid it all, except to plow through. So I’m wondering, do you ever… …have the feeling like you want to wrap your arms around something and hold it, rock it and sing a soft lullaby?…and at the same time, have a deep unexplainable sadness?
Those of you who have been avid followers of The 50 Plus Male since its inception are aware I “fought the good fight” against joining AARP (dating back to You Always Remember Your First). You also know I finally “swallowed my pride” and recently joined this august organization. AARP members automatically receive AARP The Magazine, and two articles in the latest issue have set-off a round of mental volleys that I’m having trouble resolving.
In 2003 my husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and I learned that the allopathic medical system has no answers. It’s heartbreaking to be a caregiver in this situation, especially when faced with this warning from Dr. Andrew Weil. Weil, quoted in Dawson Church’s latest book, The Genie in Your Genes, warns against relying on allopathic medicine for health problems that are not well-served by this “body as machine” approach. Yet our loved ones are at the mercy of the allopathic medical and pharmaceutical industries.
Written By: Lew Hamburger I believe in raising taxes. Now that I have your attention, this is why. We make decision-making and life way too complicated. When you cut through the fog, deciding what to do in tough situations can be reduced to three questions: * What kind of person do I want to be? (For individuals) * What kind of family and nation do I want to be a part of? * What do I have to do right now to move in that direction?

Following on from time management skills, do we actually have time for leisure activities? It is questionable whether anyone plans to have leisure time, or whether you are like me; you just grab it now and again, when someone offers you a hike up the “Grouse Grind” or something else active and you feel it is OK to take some time off! So what do you do when you do have some leisure time off? Do you want to do something active that challenges your physical stamina? Or do you just want to pamper yourself and make yourself feel better, with something like a therapeutic massage?
written by Helene Leonetti Back in 1965, a chemist working for the G.D. Searle Company accidentally discovered aspartame while testing an anti-ulcer drug. By 1983 it was approved by the FDA as an additive – an artificial sweetener trademarked as NutraSweet – to carbonated beverages, despite objections from many scientific investigators.
Today is Cyber Monday and the stock market appears to be temporarily shunning aside the ineptitude of Congress to deal with our deficit woes, along with (for the moment at least) discounting the continuing saga of Europe’s financial crisis. An annual phenomenon is the reason for this unlikely reprieve, and my eyes have an incredulous glaze each time I watch the television news accounts detailing this disturbing trend.
Written by Natalie Caine, M.A. “I am heading to college in August, miles away from Dad. I know he wants this “last” Father’s Day to be over the top. He wrote it on the refrigerator, bathroom mirror, and my sock drawer in peanut butter. DO SOMETHING FOR ME. What am I suppose to do, turn back the clock?”
No matter where we are in life, young or old, wealthy or wanting, healthy or not, each and every one of us has a life-changing event. For some, there may be only one or two life-changing events. For others, there may be multiple life-changing events—each with their own lesson, challenge, joy, fear, stressor or even a feeling of freedom.
There is a time and a place that sings to us in the middle of the night. Though real at one time, it is now a place of dreams, of fantasies, or curiosity. It is a place so vivid and enticing that, if someone actually invented a time machine, it would be the first and only place we would think of going. For Civil War buffs, it might be Charleston in April 1861 or Gettysburg in July 1863. For aging hippies, it might be San Francisco in the summer of 1967.
Written by Dr. Jamie Huysman From Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jim Morrison and yes even Elvis, the rock and roll Boomer legacy of amazing musicians who went away from drug addiction and alcoholism are a constant reminder of the past; and our past. Since the beginning of time, substance abuse and addictions were always a “younger generation phenomena”.

Gail Edgell: We are going to talk about an important topic to women, particularly those over the age of 40: breast cancer. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
Nope, I’m not talking about a kitchen table made out of recycled soda bottles, wine corks, or beer cans. Today, I’m talking about the thought process behind sustainable meal planning, shopping, cooking, eating, and leftovers, or wait for it. Eating What’s Right AND What’s Left I have had some interesting conversations with my great Boomer friend, Bill (aka, Chef Bill), an extraordinarily talented and conscientious amateur cook. Bill has a few simple rules including – but not limited to… Meals should be colorful and delicious, Meals are cause for celebration,r
If you have a tendency to put others before your needs, you may want to learn how to put yourself at the top of your list. This doesn’t mean you don’t still care about other people. It means you value yourself as much as you care about everyone else. A friend is planning the first few months ...
by: A.T. "Al" Benelli, CFP, FIC “Going green” gets plenty of environmental attention, but people often forget that environmentally smart behavior can save money as well. Help celebrate Earth Day (April 22) by doing a “green check” of how to make both energy- and money- smart plans for your home and lifestyle going forward. Here are some ideas from the Financial Planning Association of Denver, Colo.
