The New Year holiday period has just ended, typically signaling a time for a fresh outlook on life; making minor tweaks and/or major adjustments to our daily rituals. In the 2 1/2 years I’ve been composing The 50 Plus Male blog, I’ve always skipped to fresh subject matter with each posting. So, to slightly “shake the tree,” and do something a bit different, this month’s dialogue will tie-in with our most recent article, “Sense and Sensibilities.”
Have you ever had way too much to do and not enough time to get it done? That is the classic definition of stress. Stress conce s us all and is a major cause of disease today. So how does your name indicate how you will handle stress? Let’s look at a few of the indicators in a name. We are delving into stress again as so many are affected by it, plus, when school starts, stress levels seem to rise. There is more traffic on the roads, more demands on a parent’s time, making sure their children’s homework is done, etc.
As part of a multi-disciplinary medical team, I often see patients who have been taking medications to treat musculo-skeletal disorders (muscle aches, tight muscles, tingling and numbness in the arms or legs, etc.) for several weeks. Many of these patients have been ingesting acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, known as NSAIDs. Examples of NSAIDs are aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen sodium (Aleve).

It was a busy day in the neighborhood last week. A couple of Baby Boomers from opposite ends of the economic spectrum made last Wednesday more exciting than usual. Few if any news reports recognized the proximity of these two events, and certainly didn’t delve into other ways in which the protagonists were related.
A friend of mine once warned me: “Don’t trust any decision you make within the first week after you’re back from vacation because it’s the only time you are really in your right mind.” So I reminded myself how inspired I was when I got back from a vacation in Europe, how I felt in that first week back. I thought I should take a year or two off from college and write the great American novel. I didn’t. I went back to school.
There are five areas that are important when considering marrying someone and since we ultimately marry someone we date, wouldn’t it be wise to look for people to date that agree with us in those areas? The five controversial areas are: 1. Politics 2. Religion 3. Money 4. Friends 5. Children
written by Fernando Paredes Summer has arrived and along with it the dreaded bathing suit season. Whether you can’t wait to bare it all on the beach, or if you’re still working toward a weight loss goal, exercise is the key to looking and feeling great in summer months. But why else should you exercise? Here are the top 7 reasons to exercise this summer: Reason #1: To Melt Fat Awayr
I remind myself daily about maintenance; POP is no exception. As I brush my teeth, I remember halfway through to draw my pc muscle up and in. When I put my makeup on, a little voice nags at me to “pull it up, pull it in”. As I blow-dry my hair and analyze my form in the mirror (oh come on now, you know we all do it) I think to myself am I contracting my abdominals but forgetting to contract my pelvic floor? As a grassroots women’s pelvic floor health advocate, shouldn’t I be doing all the right pelvic floor stuff all the time?
Written By: Judith Sherven, PhD and Jim Sniechowski, PhD Getting started making money online can be overwhelming for beginners, especially Boomers who didn’t grow up with computers in their playpens. Many people don’t even know the basics: What is a domain? How do I buy a domain? What is a shopping cart? How do I grow a list of people to sell to? The Internet marketing questions for beginners are practically endless, and can feel overwhelming. Yet the real bottomline issue is how can people start making money online?
If you have yet to wear a sun protection hat, then you might be missing a few precious years of you life. Keep in mind that your ears, neck and nape are still susceptible to skin cancer if and when these are exposed to the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. You must stop thinking that a baseball cap, a fedora and a bandanna are sufficient sun protection because these are not, pure and simple. Again, many parts of the head and face are still exposed to the ultraviolet rays, not t
Written by Pamela Tudor We have worked hard all our lives, and now our retirements are threatened. The economic recovery is alleged to have started back in March. Health care reform, in one shape or another, was a given. Barak Obama was the icon of “change” in our government. What a difference a handful of months have made. Republicans were elected governor in New Jersey and Virginia. Massachusetts fires another “shot heard ‘round the world” by electing a Republican senator to replace Ted Kennedy. The stock market, expected to be bolstered by the news, takes a swan dive. What’s up? I can tell you in one word…uncertainty.
With stagnant incomes and roller-coaster investment returns over the past decade, the Financial Planning Association of Washington, DC wonders if investors are asking themselves, “What became of all those rules-of-thumb affecting how they handle their nest egg once they walk away from their jobs. Chief among them is the “Four Percent Drawdown Rule” first revealed by CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional William Bengen in the October 1994 issue of the journal of Financial Planning.
Anyone with a computer, an address, a telephone or a doorbell is a potential victim of some unknown entity attempting to swindle us out of our identity and money. Telemarketing scams seem more likely to target older Americans. A 1995 AARP study found half of the consumers targeted for such scams were 50 or older (an age group that comprises about 40% of the adult U.S. population), while a more recent report by the National Fraud Information Center showed 34% of those victimiz

There used to be this image of retirement that included "the country" as a setting. It was a quaint notion, expressed in terms of "I'm going to retire and move out to the country". Even the great consulting detective Sherlock Holmes eventually retired from his hectic life in London to become a beekeeper in Sussex! Naturally, these days, there's a bit of a shortage of mansions or retirement cottages out in the so-called country. Heck, we're living in a time where there's less
Sitting is not designed to be a stillness activity. Our body is not intended to remain still, but to constantly move. There is currently a great deal of interest in the negative effects of prolonged sitting, because lack of movement far outweighs the balance in a healthy lifestyle. In other words, we are doing TOO much sitting and not enough active movement that benefits our heart and our skeletal joints. Here are 10 tips to stop you from sticking to your seat in prolonged sitting. Start your day with some yoga stretching. Put your hands in the prayer position in front of you.

written by Shirley Kalisky Knock knock, who’s there? Your Caregiver! To you and I it may seem far fetched that a “stranger” will knock on your door, come into your life and you will become fast friends. But that is exactly what happens, most times, with Seniors that have an In-Home Caregiver.
If you are setting up a new place or thinking of revamping your old home, it is furniture than brings an instant face uplift for the home and what better brand to depend upon than Pulaski Furniture? One of the biggest challenges we face when we attempt to make big lifestyle transformations is that the gap between where we are right now and where we want to be can be huge! The bigger the gap, the more change that needs to be made, the more likely it is that we will stumble and become discouraged. Or, in our rush to get to where we want to be, we try to do too much and get bogged down or overwhelmed. When we are already feeling anxious or frustrated or stressed, this can leave us feeling self-critical and reluctant to move forward.
The time has come where you need to speak to an elderly loved one about being placed in a nursing home. What do you do? This article explains how you can speak to an elderly person about change of location.
The desire to protect an estate grows exponentially as the value of the estate increases. If you have little to protect, there is little concern. However, if you have a very large estate, you may actually be paranoid about protecting your estate and your privacy. In that regard, I have identified 35 distinct perils that can destroy an estate – and we’ll discuss here just a few of the most common.
By definition, revenge is quite harsh. It means to inflict hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong done to someone else. For this post, I would like to alter the definition slightly in the following way: to avenge oneself by retaliating through healing, recovery and self-care. Pretty powerful and empowering alteration, isn’t it?
Taking care of presents from little angels is one of the problems of parents with which you are most easily able to assist your customers. A Nappy disposal system can make the job of being mum or dad so much more pleasant and as a retailer you are perfectly positioned to introduce this idea and spread the word about the advantages of such systems. Use one of the leading models like the Angelcare nappy disposal System to display the pros and cons and help them solve a particular problem they face all day and all night long.
Written by: Neal Dranoff A couple of years ago, my wife Nita got smacked with the realization she was beginning to go through “the change,” i.e. menopause. God bless her, she’s been riding out this storm with the grit and grace of an America’s Cup skipper. Some days are worse than others, but the mood swings have only been semi-alarming rather than outright menacing…think of the difference between sitting on a merry go-round versus riding a roller coaster…it may be an up-and-down journey, but at least there aren’t any wild plunges and turns.

September 11 is my birthday. Until September 11, 2001, it had been a non-event. Nothing special. Business as usual topped off by an expensive dinner that could only be justified as a once-a-year commemorative extravagance.
Last year about this time, I compiled a list of gift-giving suggestions for other people. This year, I say to heck with that. This is what I want in 2012. * A Stanford quarterback almost as good as Andrew Luck (asking for one that’s better tha Luck is just insanity) * A Goldilocks winter, with not too much rain, and not too little * Equity (both kinds: social and real estate) * The highest-scoring Super Bowl ever with Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees and Tom Brady firing rockets back and forth (I love the 49ers, but not defensive games)r
written by Neal Dranoff I recently heard an announcer on one of our local sports talk radio stations initiate a new call-in segment with the listening audience called “I Just Don’t Get It.” He limited his list to sports personalities and storylines and kept his listeners within the same parameters. This got me to thinking about news items and personalities “I just don’t get,” while confining my choices to topics and people revolving around 50 plus males.
Diaper cakes are a perfect gift idea because they provide mom and baby with much needed supplies while still allowing you to add a little originality and creativity. Combine your imagination with the party theme or nursery color scheme, add in a few extra special accessories, and you will have a gift that will thrill the mom or mom-to-be, and be remembered for years to come. In fact, pictures of these stunning creations are guaranteed an honored place in the pages of every fa
In the early days of 1978, I was working at a start-up travel magazine in Seattle. It was my first full-time job and the beginning of my publishing career. I worked in as many departments as we had – editorial, circulation, administration – doing everything from writing short articles to assisting the publisher. I was in my first post-graduate romantic relationship, and it was that rosy interlude between the time her parents stopped hating me and she started. The only drawback to this time and place was my living situation, a shared house with roommates I don’t recall fondly.

Do you find yourself trading health for convenience? Like finding that close parking spot at the mall. Hopping on the escalator, rather than the steps. Or stopping at the end of your driveway to get the mail. Here are 3 simple ways to add in daily movement that will add up over the next 3 weeks. 1. Walk To Work! Well, not exactly…If your place of work has a parking lot that you can park rather far away, this is an excellent way to get in your moves. If you don’t have a parking lot, how about parking blocks away?
written by Natalie Caine, M.A. Change is around the corner. The excitement of planning and celebrating, laughs and tears, leads to great memories and endings. Fears of no dream jobs or any job, living at home, needing another car, privacy, independence, routines shifting, finances draining, you want solutions and sometimes it is a trial and error before peace arrives. Peace doesn’t stick all day or night. That is unrealistic. Who said you need to abandon all feelings except for happiness?
Life coaching is a booming profession and more and more boomers are flocking to the opportunity of helping others change their lives for the better. What draws us to this opportunity?
You might not be surprised to know that seniors require more care than children due to the numerous ailments, the medications that must be carefully measured, and the amount of supervision that some medical conditions require. What you might be surprised about is the variety of options your senior has available for their home health care. Below is a list of the most astounding home health care services with a few reasons why these services rank so highly. 1. Care.com While Ca
Written By: A.T. "Al" Benelli, CFP, FIC Each and every day, approximately 10,000 baby boomers celebrate their 65th birthday. Most people identify the arrival of age 65 with the event of “retirement” and the receipt of Social Security benefits. Actually, the age of full Social Security retirement benefits for most baby boomers is currently age 66. Reduced benefits with earned income limitations can be taken as early as age 62. Should you take the money at 62 or 66 or somewhere in between? So, what’s best?
Dear Coaches, I broke up with my boyfriend of three years this past May. I'm not sure if I'm ready to date yet, but I would like your advice on what to consider and how to know when you're ready to date again? Donna ________________________________________ Mari responds ... Regarding what to consider, here are a few thoughts to ponder: Consider how fulfilling your life is right this moment and ask yourself if it would be enhanced -- not completed -- but enhanced by the presence of someone else.
By: Neal Dranoff My wife, Nita, is often the recipient of a somewhat “left-handed” compliment from me. I throw it out there whenever she asks a question that almost causes whiplash as I quickly turn my head towards her silently wondering “where did that thought come from?” Over the years I’ve come to accept these outlier queries as a by-product of Nita’s fertile creativity.
When Mama’s doctor had mentioned hospice about two years before the dementia had been diagnosed, we hadn’t been ready and neither had Mama. Granted, we, my siblings and I, had already been caregivers for our mother who hadn’t been able to take care of herself for the previous three years. But we hadn’t been ready to call it quits. At that time, what we’d known of hospice had mostly been bits and pieces because we hadn’t been interested in that option at the time. So we pretty much had held on to the negative image of it to dissuade us from even considering hospice.
A little more than a year ago, the American voters elected a new President on the basis of “change”. One of the major issues was the alleged end to special interests, lobbyists and “back-room” dirty dealing. “Not in my White House”, as I seem to recall. Well, America, one look at the Senate Healthcare Reform bill will tell you that not only has there been no change in the business as usual… it’s gotten worse than ever. In order to sway the votes of a few Senatorial holdouts among the 60 who were expected to go along just look at how much “fat” was added to this bill.
Written By: Lynn Wiese Sneyd I was sitting on the plane, heading back to Milwaukee from Albuquerque. This is probably the most difficult part of goal setting. Yet it is also one of the most important aspects to actually achieving your goals. Everyone has had the experience of setting a goal, especially after the winter holidays, and it is exciting for the first few days. We pull ourselves out of bed a few minutes early and are very dedicated to marking that extra task off our list. Setting the goal is still new enough that we can feel what it will be like to accomplish it.

For the past couple of months, we’ve been considering a new social phenomenon—the “Type R” personality. At the risk of overgeneralization, here’s what we’re talking about. “Type R’s” are those who have reached retirement and committed themselves to a “recreative” lifestyle. That is, a lifestyle characterized by thoughtful overhaul of one’s approach to living.
Even though Massachusetts does not recognize the living will to be an enforceable legal document; as an Attorney, I still advise my clients to have one, but not just your typical living will â a form too general in my opinion. I provide my clients with the Five Wishes document. If they so choose to execute this document, it provides them a vehicle for controlling how they will be treated if they become seriously ill. It addresses:rn1) the person they want to make care decis
