Why do the Good Ones Quit and Leave & The Poor Ones Quit and Stay? Part II How We Deal More Effectively With Lower Performance Levels. I am sure that most people are familiar with Pareto’s Principle or the 80/20 rule. It basically states that as a rule of thumb 80% of your sales come from 20% of your sales reps, 80% of customer complaints come from 20% of your customers or products and in the case of managing workers, 80% of your time is usually spent managing 20% of your em

One of the biggest business buzzwords today is engagement. Everyone suddenly seems to have realized that we need to have employees who are engaged in their work. Like the other examples, creating and nurturing engaged employees is important and will make a difference both for the individuals and the organization. I believe in the importance

There is little doubt that I have a flair for unique names. My name, Saintmoses, is suggestive to that fact. While I was growing up I met a pretty lady who told me that her name was Kentra. I wasn’t as mesmerized by her beauty and coy essence as by her name. Even though Kentra’s face is lost today to my memory but the name still reverberates even in my subconscious. I know you must be wondering now why this is so. I will tell you presently.
One Simple Rule is Having a Big Impact.nnI didn't invent the rule. I discovered it -- at a small, fast growing, highly successful company that implements simple practices with extraordinary results.nnOne day I was having lunch with Dwight Cooper, a tall, thin, mild-mannered former basketball player and coach who had spent the last 10 years building and growing a company he co-founded into one of the leading nurse staffing companies in the world. Dwight's company, PPR, was nam
You know you need zero title to show up at leadership - both within your work and at your home. I've been in the trenches - developing Leaders Without Titles within organizations - for nearly 15 years. Here are some of the personal habits I've seen the best of the best model: 1. They ask brilliant questions. 2. They are fit like athletes (as I mentioned on Twitter the other day "Your #1 business asset is your health".) 3. They are direct/clear/authentic communicators 4. They read (The best leaders have the biggest libraries! Read to Win).
The first core principle of Absolute Leadership is to identify what you in-tend to do, and why, in order to give meaning to your aspirations. Whatever you aspire to professionally and in your private life should define what you would truly like to become, based upon the personal values that shape your aspirations. Aspirations extend beyond business and career to all other domains or aspects of your life, such as your partner relationship and family, social and community activities, spirituality and religion, finances, health and fitness.
Have you ever been in a situation where you saw a leader take a specific action, yet you had no idea "why" or "how" the leader decided to take that specific action? Well, I have too! That's why I decided to study various leaders that I have worked with over 22 years and before long, I started to get insights into why leaders do what they do. More importantly, I started to understand that what a leader does is much deeper than the specific action he takes.
Business Ethics: Most of us have faced a crossroad in our working career where we might be tempted to choose reward over righteousness. Perhaps we’ve let blind ambition cloud our vision and we failed to see how one little step in the wrong direction can ultimately lead to us running on the wrong side of the tracks. Let me illustrate my point by citing a personal career issue when I worked in the private sector.
As you can tell from the title, this article is about sex. Actually it’s more business than it is about sex. Which is probably because I know a lot more about business than I know about sex. A fairly successful individual named Warren Buffett once remarked that he worried about people who ...

What does it mean to be single-minded? How does single-mindedness look? Single-mindedness is the relentless pursuit of a goal, objective or end state. To become single-minded, the leader must make a decision to focus on only one thing, to the exclusion of everything else – one idea, one project, one goal, one end state. Everything else is secondary to the pursuit of this goal or objective.
Multi-taskers are considered as the geniuses created by God of the 21st century. Have you ever wondered what is it that multi-taskers do that you canât? The answer is nothing. At the monthly Global Revenue Review breakfast meeting, the CEO allows the executive team to take the initiative. The CEO doesn’t sit at the head of the table, listens a lot, and defers to the group decisions. That afte oon in a cost-cutting meeting with the same team, the CEO sits at the head of the table, takes charge and gives orders. Such apparently drastic changes in style can make a lot of sense. The key question is however: does the rest of the team understand the reas

I was in the Recon Platoon with the 1st cavalry Division back in 1966. I was in Class A uniform. Class A uniform is a dress uniform that you wear for dress or for inspections. I was being shot at as I was leaving the airplane. I was praying that I would not be killed that day. We had no weapons to defend our selves. The only protection we had were sandbags. Believe me when I say, "I was down behind the sandbags" -- I was really down there.

I recently received a call from the President of a firm with whom I worked as a consultant for a team building project. A couple of weeks ago I shared with you “3 Positive Strategies to Deal with an Eeyore Vampire Boss.” I knew there were flocks of negative bosses everywhere, but evidently more tha I realized. Your overwhelming response prompted me to remember some of my Eeyore Vampire bosses. The one who was so insecure she didn’t want the organization to grow. Another who wanted me to trade product for pot. The one whose boyfriend was jealous of my success. I reflected on what I learned from them and here are “3 More Positive Strategies to Deal with Your Eeyore Vampire Boss”:
This month’s theme is about Intention as a leadership practice. I recently visited Bhutan, a fascinating, tiny country in Asia, just south of Tibet and north of India. Famous for its breathtaking natural beauty and unique architecture, Bhutan was closed to the West until the early 1960’s. Television arrived only a decade ago, and there is still one highway north-south and one east-west with no traffic lights, even in the capital city. Bhutan is well-known for its incredible

While different people will have different opinions about "education" and its value, I don`t know anyone who wouldn`t agree that "learning more" is better than "knowing less". Education, as I define it for this article, includes school, seminars, workshops and all manner of formal approaches; as well as coaching, mentoring, apprenticeships, focused reading, online learning, planned experiences and more. As you read this article I urge you to think broadly and expansively abou
Too many times a supervisor will wait until they just can't stand an employee's behavior one more minute before they decide to issue an employee written warning letter, or worse they want to terminate them! This more than anything else will put a business at risk of an employee law suit because if you are challenged and placed under a microscope they will ask you if the employee knew what they were doing was wrong.
Issuing an employee written warning letter should always be taken very seriously. After all, the person on the receiving end could eventually be out of a job! Even when someone deserves to be disciplined we should make sure that we have come to the right conclusion before issuing the warning letter.
“Overwhelm” is a constant theme in our coaching conversations lately. Business professionals have this sense of more effort and fewer positive results. There’s more to do than there is of me to do it. How do you deal with overwhelm? Here are 3 things you can do starting right now to move your business forward while overwhelmed: Focusr Your attention is a valuable, non-renewable resource. This most precious asset is best invested according to your priorities. Set your priorities based on:
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, as put forth in the Bill of Rights, protects the right of the people to own and bear arms. It is my firm belief that law abiding American citizens have the right to possess and bear arms. This is a fundamental Constitutional right and is one of the pillars on which our great country was built.
The Law of Specificity States: “To the degree that you are not specific in your communication that is the level of guessing or mind-reading the receiver of your message needs to do.” If people in your organization feel like they have to continually guess what is expected of them, or ‘mind-read’ the individual who just left them directions for a delegated project, performance and results are going to suffer.
“If a man with money meets a man with experience, the man with experience will gain some money and the man with money will gain some experience”
