One of the most annoying things about having to share a bathroom is the fact that there’s stuff everywhere, all the time. Whether you’re sharing a bathroom with your family members or with your college roommates, everyone has their own toiletries that they want to keep separate. Usually, everyone wants their own stuff to stay in the bathroom – no one is willing to keep their perfumes and their face washes and their hairbrushes in their rooms. People want stuff right where they can see it, and more importantly, they want it where they use it.
Did you know that the average person can only keep seven things in short-term memory at one time? Do you lay awake at night worried that you will forget something important? Are you consistently forgetting about tasks that need to be completed? Before you assume that your memory is failing, try writing your tasks down. - Paper vs. Electronic -- I often get asked which task management system is better -- paper or electronic. There is no one right answer. It depends on your style, mobility, budget, etc.
Going through your day at a hundred miles an hour doesn't leave much time for thought. When you are not thinking you are simply reacting to what happens around you. This anxiety causing cycle will cause you to lose your mind. When you feel yourself spiraling out of control, you must stop. Stop, take a deep breath, and think about what you are doing. Stop to really think about the pieces and parts. What is the next step you must take? Are you doing things in an efficient order? How can you get control of the situation to avoid future anxiety-filled days?
Before the advent of the washing machine, families did not wash clothing all that often. The reason for this was simple: it was hard work. Clothes had to be soaked in warm, soapy water and then rubbed against the corrugated surface of a washboard to remove dirt, odors and stains. The process took several minutes for each article of clothing and was hard on the hands. As you might imagine, scrubbing an entire basket of clothes clean could take hours. Then they had to be hung on the clothesline and left to dry.
One of my goals in life was never to quilt. All of that changed one beautiful rainy day at Cape Mears Lighthouse in Oregon. I bought a package with 12 lighthouse quilt blocks in their lovely tincy- tiny gift shop. I love lighthouses so these called out to me. I planned on asking my friend who was a master quilter if she would help me make these into a quilt. This was going to be my one and only quilt.

Making a meal for your friends, family, or just for yourself can be a relaxing, rewarding, and tasty experience. But one thing that is never any fun is searching for around cookware or cutlery. The kitchen is arguably the most difficult room in the home to organize. Benjamin Franklin must have had it in mind when he thought up his famous epigram, “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

Maintaining a clean, well organized garage is a chore for even the most intrepid organizers. As a kid, being told to clean out the garage was a task no one ever wanted the parents to assign. Very simply, this job is tough, it is tedious, and it is time consuming. Furthermore, for most people, ...
I can't tell you how often I hear my friends, colleagues, and clients complain about how other people just don't respect their time. But the only reason that folks take advantage of you, expect too much from you, or don't respect your personal free time is that you have ALLOWED them to behave that way in the past.
Back-to-school time – what does that mean to you? For some people, it’s shopping for school supplies, gearing up for PTA meetings, and artwork taped to the refrigerator. For others, it’s the beginning of a constant struggle to get everyone up, ready, and out of the house on time. Morning should be an enjoyable time for you and your kids – not a battle of the wills or a race against the clock.
KNOW THYSELF The first key to creating a peaceful holiday season is identifying those holiday traditions that you ENJOY and those that you don’t. Creating Systems that Work for You rn rnI guess I'm a bit spoiled. I often take for granted many of the systems we've developed, software programs we use every day and processes we've automated in our company. It always amazes me when I go into other companiesâmany of them bigger and more sophisticated than our ownâand find them lacking in some of the most basic systems. I see them struggling with antiquated databases and obsolete software, which translates into frustrate
Organizing is about having a strategy - its not about having the latest and greatest containers. Many of my clients and audiences fall victim to all the great “Organizing” & “ Organized” pictures of beautiful closet systems, kitchen & organizing bin systems which are only 30% filled with color coordinated items. Advertisers make it appear to be an organizing utopia.
In the summer are you frazzled and tired of your kids at the end of every day? Are you counting the days until school starts? Summer can be a time to help spark your creativity and your child’s creativity as well. Hold a family meeting where kids can choose an activity they are interested in. Older children can help younger children which can help siblings bond to each other and teach them respect for each other. Some suggestions of what to do so children don’t get bored and you don’t pull your hair out: 1. Plan a picnic.

For generations, mothers have been telling their daughters that the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. It other words, they had to learn how to cook in order to land a husband. The familiar saying lost a bit of steam during the Women’s Liberation Movement of the 1970s, and a funny thing happened in the interim—men learned how to cook.
In can be a challenge to organize the items in your vehicle in order to create a practical and efficient space for traveling. With the right products, however, organizing your car, van or truck can be accomplished with little effort. By dividing your car into three sections, the front seats, the passenger area, and the cargo area, you can identify specific needs and products to organize each part of your vehicle. The front seating area houses the “control center” of your vehicle.
I love the acronym of SYSTEM, Save Your Self Time Energy and Money. While it is about finding the most efficient way to do things, it is also about knowing specifically how things are done. In other words, you need documentation of the step-by-step process or procedure of how your systems are done. The best way for documenting this is by having a procedure manual for each job position within your company.
Sometimes it seems like the hardest part of getting organized is just finding the time to do it. Especially if it's been years since you've made a dedicated effort towards organization, just the thought of tackling such a big job is enough to make you put it off until another day. However, dealing with disorganization on a daily basis can be very stressful, so it can be well worth your efforts to just bite the bullet and set aside the time to get the job done right. It's OK to Just Do a Little Bitr
The entryway. Depending on your home, it can be an entire mud room with lots of space, a formal foyer at the front of your house, a breezeway from the garage, or a portion of a hall in a small apartment. Regardless of where it is, or its size, if it is organized, your homecoming will always be less stressful, not to mention that you may actually want to have visitors over! The following are some tips to help make your entryway more organized: - If you have a front or back hall closet, use it for everyday outer wear for the current season only.
Your refrigerator is full of wilted lettuce, rotten tomatoes, and ripe-smelling fish. In your pantry are three bags of ancient flour, a packet of six-week-old cookies, and several half-eaten bags of potato chips. There are weevils in your cereal, and ants in your sugar! What a terrible waste of ...
The kitchen is the activity hub of most homes. Not only do we prepare meals here, but we gather with our family and friends to reconnect and bond as well. In many homes, the kitchen also serves as homework central. This is the room where we pay our bills and deliberate important decisions. It’s the veritable command center of the modern family home. That’s why it’s so important to keep it free of the clutter that can cause stress and agitation. And let’s not forget about cooking.
Sometimes don't you feel like you are running around in circles and have lost control? You will get a lot more accomplished and have less stress in your life if you follow four steps to organizing your time. Most of the stress and 'running out of time' that we experience, is due to a time management problem. Don't feel bad, most of us have it, even some of our family and friends. This is one of those articles that after you have read it, you will wonder why you haven't thought of how to do it, all by yourself.
A large percentage of my clients face paper clutter challenges. Despite visions of a paperless society when the computer was invented, we are still inundated with paper at home and at work. One of the biggest culprits is “junk mail” — those credit card solicitations, catalogs, circulars, and the like that you don’t want or need, but that still keep coming. Experts estimate that the average person receives 41 pounds of junk mail per year. How to stop the madness?
If your kitchen isn’t living up to your expectations, give it a makeover for convenience and pizazz using the steps below. 1. Take stock of your kitchens purpose. Is it for cooking, baking, eating, and storing food? If so, move all the items that are unrelated to the purpose of your space ...
If you have stumbled across OrganoGold as a business opportunity, you are probably sceptical about the income they claim you can make, and what it's all about. They say you can make millions selling their coffee alternative product, and keep it recurring each month. Now that is a very bold statement to make, and granted most people will grow a large amount of curiosity over it. But, let's delve a little in what the business opportunity involves, and how much, 'training', you
What do you see when you open your linen closet? Do you wish your tumbled bunches of sheets and towels were neat folded stacks? Ideally you should know at a glance both the inventory of your closet and where each item is located. A typical linen closet contains sheets, table linens and towels for use in more than one room in your home. Because we use our linen closets in this way it is easy for them to become messy and unorganized. Organizing your linen closet can be easy. Fo
Spring cleaning is a biological urge to make way for the new (season) and if you act upon that urge a cleaner office space shall emerge and your life will be content once again. Whether it is an old friendship that has outlived its expiry date or those pile of papers on your desk that no longer serve any value, clearing it away will clear your mind and bring about a more productive and peaceful day, how can you most effectively clear it away?: 1. How Clean do You Want it? T
With spring-cleaning time on its way, we are all in the mode to clean those closets, get the built-up and hidden areas of our homes cleaned, organized, and eliminate all of the stress points in our lives. How many of us think about cleaning out annoyances in the form of needless associates? We all have them, they come in many forms, a relative that is always calling, people that will not take 'no' for an answer and the office busy body. These people have driven us crazy for years! They call at the most inopportune times and upset our work schedule.
While speaking to my friend and colleague Christine Lucas of the Salvation Army last month, it dawned on me that I needed to write this article. Often I find in my client’s homes stacks of solicitations and donation requests. These free address labels, greeting cards, and pleas for cash can be a BIG part of paper overwhelm. Especially if you haven’t created yet a “Giving plan” that can streamline the entire process.
We all want to do our part in keeping the Earth free of bacteria and still have it smell fresh, and there are ways we can do just that without the dangerous fumes! Just think of all of the unnatural odors that we already contend with on a daily basis; gas fumes, cigarette smoke, pet odors, smells from outdoor wood furnaces, odors from factories. Cleaning supplies on the market are too numerous to mention and all claim to be 'bacteria cleaning agents'. I wonder how great, great grandma lived to be so old without having some of these in her cabinet.
Over the last week, so many interesting opportunities have come, either by phone or email or in person, that I am amazed. Now, I don’t know about you, but when my brain is stimulated, I tend to be able to see bigger pictures and think of relationships of things. So I ask you to forgive the seeming sidetrack for a minute. I was thinking about House – the TV show.
We all have a little bit of a perfectionist attitude in us although we don't admit it. Sometimes we put off a job because we want it to meet high standards (Fear of failure) and don't have a plan (lack of a goals) to execute to get the job finished the right way. Sometimes we put off a job because we don't like it and want to ignore it and sometimes we don't like the person that gave us the job; Therefore, we resent having to do it.
People often ask how to get their kids, spouse, friend, roommate, or parent organized. They are often frustrated by others’ clutter and may have given “helpful” advice: “If you would just get organized…” The less organized person’s response (if they had one) would sound something like this: “If I knew how to get organized, I would have done so already!” So how do we help the less-organized people in our lives? The following techniques are designed to help you (or someone you know) begin to get organized:
I've worked with many couples as a professional organizer over the last 7 years. Many of them are married, some are domestic partners, others just roommates, etc. My background as a trained mediator often comes in handy during these client sessions. Often, during an organizing assessment, a client will mention that another user in the home cannot maintain an organizing system (or that the other user IS the organizing problem!). When I inquire as to whether the system was created with the other user in mind, the client usually responds in the negative. Therein lies the problem.
