We can observe that there are times when the vital nature is energetic, enthused, active, and makes efforts. There are other times when it is dull, withdrawn, sullen, lacking energy and clearly is not taking interest in doing anything. The difference between these two states generally lies in the way the vital nature obtains its ‘food’. Food in this sense is the method by which the vital nature becomes energized.

There are tales in the Puranas that indicate that even the Gods, if they want to evolve and develop, must take birth on earth in a human inca ation. If we look broadly at the evolution of consciousness from the gross material, to the vital, to the vital-mental and eventually to the mental consciousness, we see an ascending series of forms that embody these various levels.
Few are those individuals who were conceived through a consecrated and conscious act of prayer and dedication by the parents. Those individuals are blessed with the opportunity to live a life of dedication and devotion. Most people, however, are conceived without much thought or consideration going into the process, at least in terms of creating a pure, focused, dedicated, and consecrated process of conception. Many people of course consciously choose to have children, but do not go further than that they are willing for a child to be conceived.
The mechanical mind encompasses some of the most basic, most rudimentary activities of the mind. It lies below the faculties of higher logical reasoning, and forms a foundation for the most simple and automatic mental processes. It is like the core computer language upon which all kinds of routines are later built and which functions behind the scenes to keep the functionality of the computer in place.
For sure! Our trust i.e. our faith in a master, a Spiritual Master, helps us overcome any difficulties in the way of spirituality. rnBut does one have to keep faith and trust or does it come naturally? Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, the Enlightened being, explains:rnNo. Faith does not have to be kept; it has to come naturally. It is wrong to keep faith. Keeping faith does not work. A stamp will stick only if there is glue on it, right? Will it stick without glue? When I was twenty
Emotion means feeling, and it is a part of our relative selfrnIt is said, when thoughts are flowing at a natural rate, there is peace, but when thoughts of anxiousness, depression and fear arise, one may become emotional.rnAnger, pride, attachment and greed cause a person to become emotional. As long as the human body is in motion i.e. in a normal state, there is no hinsa (violence). But when it becomes emotional, millions of subtle life-forms within the body get killed, as a

While the mind does not generally recognise the consciousness of the body, it remains true that the body has its own ability to respond to circumstances. For those who have a highly developed mental or vital being, these powers frequently override the natural responsiveness of the body. When we look at the animal kingdom, for instance, we see that if a dog or cat is ill or out of sorts, it tends to find its solution in letting the body rest, or even, finding the right plant or herb that it needs at that moment, if such is available.
We focus our attention and awareness on the exte al world in which we are active. We receive impressions, sensations, vibrations, impulsions and pressures from that world and it fixes our mind on that palpable experience of reality. This is however not the entirely of our existence nor of the greater reality.
The vital has a natural tendency to seek for the fulfillment of its being in some form of enjoyment. In the exte al surface being, this enjoyment takes the form of a seeking after pleasure. With this seeking after pleasure, however, comes also the experience of pain. Pleasure and pain alte ate and eventually the seeker understands that transitory pleasures and pains, the operation of the dualities of the life of the senses, is not actual fulfillment, nor does it solve the significance of purpose of one’s life.
As the seeker attempts to follow a spiritual path, he frequently finds that he struggles with old habits, desires, feelings, cravings, emotions and ideas. He believes these are part of ‘who he is’ and he thus cannot find a way to overcome them, In some cases, he is deeply attached to some of these things as expressing his unique personality. He does not have any key as to how to go about a self-exceeding in this circumstance.
Yes, one certainly can!rnThe spiritual science of Akram Vignan specifies that although physically, one may be eating non-vegetarian food, they can surely become vegetarian mentally and spiritually. How??? Letâs understand that from the Enlightened Oneâ¦rnThe Enlightened One has provided a 4-step solution, which when applied, we can get the desired result out of it. A Firm determination to become a vegetarian rnTo be aware of our mistake, in itself, is a very big thing. It
In life, we all come across different situations. When we have our loved ones to care for us, have a good job to look forward to, and have enough money and comforts, we feel that life is beautiful. During such good and happy times, we think we are managing our life so well and hence we have all the happiness in life. But when life gets rough, when the very people who respected us previously seem to ignore or insult us, when we happen to face failure and loss wherever we go an
How do we decide what we decide? Why do we do what we do? For most people, the response is relatively automatic. They have an innate sense of having ‘made a decision’ and they thus believe they have free will.
Most people live their lives centered around the ego-personality and the exte al life. Their focus and actions are based in the needs, desires and gratifications that are put up by the body, the vital life-energy and the mind. They do not have a conscious relationship with the soul or the most inward being, the psychic being, and thus, they do not fall under the explicit direction or control of the soul or psychic being.
It is typical for human beings to associate their knowledge, their artistic achievements, their skills as something they create within themselves. They tether the ego-consciousness to all such developments, believing that somehow they are unique and special in terms of the ability to create wonderful things all by themselves. In the West, successful people have the illusion of the ‘self-made man’.
When thereâs a lot of trouble in oneâs life, eg. lost a job, family member passed away, thereâs an ongoing conflict with someone you love dearly, we usually rush to God and sincerely pray to him with feelings of total surrender. So, do these prayers help get over our problems? Yes, a sincere prayer is always heard!rnPrayer is a special form of request made to God. And when it is done with a true and a pure heart with feelings of surrender, âDear God! I surrender my pr
The Enlightened One says, âIf worldly unhappiness or suffering is not there, we would never search for permanent happiness. Therefore, it is very helpful to us. Permanent happiness is not through body. It is independent of body. When there is pain, we search for safeside, âWhere is my permanent safeside?â That will help us go towards reality, towards the Pure Soul.â He further explains, âWe have done causes. Thatâs why we are getting suffering. Causes are anger, p
For most people, there is a tremendous barrier of skepticism about things that they cannot see or experience for themselves, There is also a good deal of ignorance about how things actually work in the world, which can lead to misconceptions and a tendency toward gullibility when someone appears to speak with authority, particularly when it conce s things that otherwise are unable to be verified by the exte al senses. The role of ‘miracles’ is to bolster the credibility and acceptance of specific religious groups or leaders.
Western psychology has developed with the basis that the subconscious mind is extremely powerful and can determine actions and reactions of individuals that overcome the conscious intentions of those individuals. Events, circumstances, perceptions, and corresponding fears, hopes and excitement, deep-seated emotions, all wind up in the subconscient, ‘out of sight and out of mind’ so to speak.
A life focused solely on meditation, inner development, growth of knowledge, or on prayer and devotion, tends to avoid the implications of the ongoing evolution of consciousness and the need for transformation and positive change to create the circumstances for that evolution of consciousness to occur and thrive. It may have been helpful, even necessary, for some exclusive concentration on the path of knowledge, or the path of love and devotion, in order to develop, refine and empower those aspects of the being.
There is a considerable difference in effective results from the psychic being having an influence, essentially from ‘behind’ the surface nature, on the actions of the life in the exte al world, and what Sri Aurobindo and the Mother designate as the psychic being ‘coming forward’. Until the psychic being is sufficient well-developed, it is essentially ‘overpowered’ by the energy and focus of the exte al body, life and mind. It may make ‘suggestions’ but it cannot, at that stage, take full control of the exte al life.
Yes! rnLetâs learn from Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, an enlightened being about how one feels after enlightenment. He explains this experience through an illustration....rnSuppose there is pitch darkness in your home, how will you feel? If you try to move, you will have clashes with chair, table, etc., isnât it? rnAnd what will happen if you have full light in your room? rnWhen there is no light, one is unable to see; whereas in presence of light, one can see things clearly
It is difficult to appreciate that there are gradations of consciousness, each with their own distinct characteristics, that occur outside our normal human range of perception. We tend to see separations and divisions within our limited range, while we treat anything outside that range as being uniform and indistinct. If we, however, simply observe our own range of perception and awareness carefully, we will see that there are gradations that occur within that range.
When on one hand, too many thoughts cloud the mind at a time, and on the other hand, we donât know how to deal with these thoughts; when on one hand same thoughts keep repeating over and over again, and on the other hand we fail to understand how to resolve these thoughts and bring about a solution to the matter-at-hand, in such situations, it often creates such a turbulence within us that we feel sick and tired of this mind, but canât find ways and means to come out of i
As we are primarily based in our ego-consciousness, we tend to accept that ideas we have, feelings we have, emotions we express, needs and desires we seek after, are all what make up ourselves, our personality, our persistent individuality. We identify with a specific religion, political movement, philosophy, or way of life and we think that we somehow are independent and created this for ourselves.
Sure!rnâIâ - our real Self is not John (you may insert your name here), yet we believe I am JohnrnParam Pujya Dada Bhagwan, the Enlightened Being has said, âOne does not know who he really is, and hence claims to be what he is really not. To claim to be something you are not is called âegoâ!â Self means Aatma, Aatma means SoulrnOne has gained knowledge of everything except oneâs own Self, the Soul. The Lord has said, âTo the one who has realized his Soul, noth
When we are interested in something we naturally focus on that to the exclusion of other distractions. Time passes and we do not notice it. Things that would ordinarily engage our attention are disregarded. This power of ‘one pointed’ concentration is however elusive when it arises just out of natural interest. If we try to engage this power of concentration in other aspects of our lives, we find it is not so easy. The primary issue is one of distraction, and again, the distractions arise through various parts of the being seeking their own interests and forms of fulfillment.
We tend to imagine that somehow the mind, the vital energy and the physical body we identify through our ego-complex as ourselves, is separate from those of everyone else. In reality, however, the physical, vital and mental substance is universal in nature and the portion we try to wall off within our ego-awareness is part of that universal Nature. It is like the idea of submerging an open-mouth jar into the ocean. The water that migrates into the jar is the same water that surrounds the jar, and the water flows back and forth between what is ‘inside’ and what is outside.
As an individual begins to consciously try to understand the yogic path and connect with his soul and discover his true self, and then find and consciously participate in the spiritual purpose of the divine manifestation, he is confronted with a number of different terms and elements that need to be distinguished and properly ordered so as to make the process clear and understandable. Sri Aurobindo has done this in a very brief overview.
There is a third factor that intervenes in the debate about free will and determinism and that is ‘random chance’. In that concept, there is basically no plan, no framework and no way to manage or control events, which thus can occur through random occurrences with no predetermined end. Both the notion of free will and determinism are overtu ed according to this conception. One can exercise free will, but it comes to naught as chance intervenes and defeats one’s will. One can believe in determinism, but chance again breaks down any predetermined patterns.

After all the attempts to bring the vital being under some kind of control, it may seem like it is an impossible task! The vital has its fixed habits of fulfillment and satisfaction and tends generally to want to continue its normal modes of action. It is, however, not a thankless task and there are solutions. We can see the potential when we look at the methods used to obtain willing cooperation from others, as well as from the animal kingdom.

Each level of consciousness acts on its own native level independent of any single individual person or embodiment. There is a subtle physical plane, a vital plane, a mental plane, and various spiritual planes beyond that characterize and represent further levels of the evolution of consciousness in the universal manifestation.
The aspiring yogic practitioner starts from the basis of the normal human egoistic standpoint of the mind-life-body complex. The process and method of perception, thought, logic, analysis, classification and labeling, reasoning, understanding and implementation in action is quite well-defined and is characteristic of what Sri Aurobindo calls the Mind. As previously noted, there are gradations of consciousness above the mental level.

Thank you for your interest in this critical issue for the future survival of our entire human race. There is a positive way forward for humanity as we face the intense challenges before us. When we are under intense pressure we have the impetus to make needed changes. That is the lesson of Nature, and the lesson of human history. What do we each worry about as we live our lives? We worry about our health and that of our family. We don’t generally tie our health issues to our environment, but there is a clear link.r
We believe we have free will. We are confronted with choices and make a decision and carry it out and believe that this decision was made freely by the individual we identify as ourself. At the same time, we can recognise the step-wise development which is called ’cause and effect’, or the law of Karma.

Under the influence of the gnostic consciousness, the entire framework of the mental organisation of life, which we accept as assumed and given, would necessarily be modified. The very basis of viewing and understanding things would have to shift from one of division and separation to one of unity and oneness. This will have profound effects all spheres of human endeavor.
One of the reasons that a seeker is advised to have the assistance of an experienced guide, or guru, in the spiritual path, is that it is easy to be confused about the real meaning of what is written in the texts. For instance, when we hear about the concept of ‘conscious sleep’ or we see Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita extolled as gudakesha, usually translated as ‘conqueror of sleep’, we tend to believe this implies staying awake, and strugglilng to not let the observing mind fall into a state of sleep. What generally results is a state of exhaustion as the body and mind do not get the opportunit

Western psychology is in its infancy as a science. It is, as is all mental knowledge, a form of ignorance, seeking and grasping for knowledge, while not actually able to see the entire picture nor understand the complexity of all the elements that go into human psychology. Thus, Freud gained a partial understanding of how unrecognised complexes, arising in many cases from trauma or childhood experiences, or natural drives hitting up against cultural taboos, can influence the way people react to various events or circumstances.
Humanity has struggled with the idea of an individual changing his character and becoming something more, or different, than what he was before. Numerous methods have been tried, and at the end of the day, almost everyone agrees that human nature and the individual character that expresses that human nature is bound and cannot be modified by any power that the human being possesses.
The human range of perception is bounded on both sides and thus, forces that are active in ranges above or below our own field of perceptions are able to act without our ability to direct know what they are doing, or interact with them consciously. To the extent that they wield influence on our lives, it is something that takes place for us basically unconsciously.
The gradations of consciousness beyond the human level represent levels of awareness and power that far exceed anything that we can appreciate from the purely human mental level. In the Taittiriya Upanishad, there is a “calculus” of gradations of bliss. “Let there be a young man, excellent and lovely in his youth, a great student; let him have fair manners and a most firm heart and great strength of body, and let all this wide earth be full of wealth for his enjoying.
