A common question all students new to Spanish always ask is: what are the best ways to learn the Spanish language? With so many different ways available for students to choose from, it can be difficult to know which ones are the best to choose. Whilst it is true that people learn in different ways, the following three methods represent what I believe helped me the most to learn the language and make my life a lot easier here in the city of Barcelona.

1. Learn Spanish Language Courses - It is absolutely essential to take a Spanish language course and there is sure to be one on offer in your area. Evening classes are the most popular but there are some places who offer classes at the weekends and while I do think it is vital to attend a formal course, you do need to be aware of a couple of issues. When I started to learn how to speak Spanish, I signed-up for a four-week intensive course and I have to say that it was not a smart decision. Such a course would be better suited to intermediate level Spanish speakers, but for those new to Spanish, intensive courses can be overwhelming. The course did provide me with basic Spanish but a better choice would've been to have taken classes on two evenings each week and not five. It didn't help that the course tutor had little imagination and simply read-out the course materials all in Spanish with the students then repeating the words and phrases, and as there was hardly any role-play, the course wasn't much fun either. If possible, find out about the course tutor and get a description about how the course is taught because it's so important to have fun when you start to learn how to speak Spanish.

2. Learn Spanish Language Software - As well as attending evening classes, I also studied a learn Spanish language software course just to introduce a bit of variety and bolster the Spanish I was picking up from my more formal studies. I purchased a course called "Rocket Spanish" and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it. The course contains audio, vocabulary builders, quizzes and flashcards and the various verb tenses are explained in an easy-to-understand way. I used the audio and the flashcards everyday, just for twenty or thirty minutes and it's a nice, relaxed way to build your vocabulary. Yes, lots of other learn Spanish language courses are being offered - Learn Spanish Like Crazy, Fluenz, Rosetta Stone, however, all I used was Rocket Spanish and it did the job I wanted.

3. Learn Spanish Language On The Streets - I admit this is probably a tad simpler for me as I'm living in a Spanish-speaking country however, I think speaking in Spanish with native speakers for just 20 minutes a day is the best method of all. But this triggers fear in many students, especially committing an embarrassing howler but honestly, this isn't an issue at all! I forced myself to go out and speak Spanish with the locals here and it really was the best thing I did. And you know, it wasn't hard, I didn't get laughed at or ignored, in fact, I had lots of fun and I received lots of respect and one or two treats from the warm-hearted people here. Native speakers will understand that you're trying hard to communicate in Spanish and trust me, they'll be keen to offer help. I've met so many people here, a number of whom have become friends and this is ongoing, all down to getting out there and speaking in Spanish with the locals wherever I go. From shops, cafés, supermarkets, the busy market near to my apartment, a place where the market traders will greet me by name whenever I go there to bars and restaurants, I make an effort to speak with the locals in Spanish and the best thing is that I often come across more really useful Spanish phrases to sprinkle in to my ever-increasing vocabulary. Resolve to do this as much as is possible and believe me, you'll greatly improve your Spanish and have a blast as you do!

Those are my three best methods to learn Spanish language and even though I used one or two other methods to help me learn Spanish, I think that these are the top three without a doubt.
