You could have knocked me over with a feather when Syracuse University economist Arthur Brooks
said last in December 07 on Marketplace.publicradio.org that his studies show that giving away
money actually makes your bank balance grow.

That's counterintuitive, isn't it? said host Kai Ryssdal.

Actually, people GIVE because they're better off, but the study shows that they're also BETTER OFF BECAUSE THEY GIVE!

Brooks decided the theory was worth testing. Lots of data support it, including his interviews of numerous wealthy people who believe one of the secrets to their prosperity is because they give.

This is the Law of Attraction VALIDATED by an economist. Gotta love it when mystic goodies are supported by hard data.

Sharing brings more to us. In other words, what we think about is what we attract.

TRY THIS REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY
*********************************************
A couple decades ago when I was just starting my own public relations firm (and quite broke) I encountered this tidbit: that if you pay your bills with a happy heart instead of resentment, it becomes easier to pay your bills. Not only psychologically, but also because of the working of the universal laws.

I began practicing gratitude while paying bills, thinking how wonderful to have the money to cover all my needs and then some. Through the years, there's always been more than enough.

With that extra something, it's been my extreme pleasure to give to charity. This year as I wrote checks I envisioned myself one year from now, writing checks for ten times the amount, and growing into the philanthropist I hope to become. I'll keep you posted!

(By the way, Americans donate on a personal level far more than Europeans--partially because we are richer. Amazingly though, Brooks says, if we increased our giving by one percent, it would result in a $39 billion increase in gross domestic product). Wow.

Brooks encourages a diversified portfolio of charitable giving. Actual volunteering boosts happiness, while money giving raises money prosperity. You'll see it in your paycheck, he says, but more importantly in your happiness and health.

So even when you're "broke" don't let yourself fall into the mindset of "poor."

"Broke" is a temporary condition and "Poor" is the mindset that keeps you there. As you fall asleep and as you awaken, think of these words: "Wealth and success, wealth and success," and let them flow to you.
