Can we call someone a liar if he or she believed in a statement to be true?, can we call someone a liar if he did not tell his wife that he is dating a male lover? He believed that he is telling the truth when he says ‘ I am not dating a lover, I am in love with my lover’ He believed in his heart that ‘ he is not dating anyone’ he is simply in love with the man, but he does meet up with him on a regular basis.

The opinion of so many of us, would say, yes, he is laying, and deceiving his wife, or is he not?

Upon reflection, and careful evaluation of the intention whether conscious or unconscious, one would still feel that the statement

‘if the subject lie with the intention to deceive another’, is a lie or not a lie. If he is not intending to deceive the other.

Then maybe classed as morally wrong, however, this gives rise to several problems, but I am only going to stick to one due to time constraint and the complex nature of this psychological and philosophical argument. So forgive me if my description does not answer the question fully. However, the objective of this brief discussion, should enable us to think more imaginatively, creatively, to achieve a balanced understanding to remedy our anxiety, and guilt about the nature of lie.

The subject who declares a statement that he believes to be true – if he believes in his statement to be true, but perceived as false to others, only uses it to deceive another, he maybe categorized as telling a lie. A statement maybe false, the subject holding that statement believes it to be true, the subject is already deceived into thinking that the statement is true.

If, unbeknownst to him, the statement is false, again, he can be accused of telling a lie.

For instance: if black tells white that there is no buses on Thursday, which black believes to be true, with the intention that white believe there is no buses on in this area, which black believes to be false ( since black believes there is a bus on Wednesday), then black is lying to white, if black is mistaken, and there is a bus on Thursday.

Conspirators deliberately tell lies to one another without the intention to betray to one another, but they do so with shrewdness and with the intention to deceive Eavesdrop, in this case, the hypothesis may be construed as that they are lying.

However, both examples provoke hot debate, as to whether or not one should categorize either of these hypotheses as lies.

IF had to write a dissertation or an essay on the definition of lie, and deception, I would first do some primary reading, then see if I can argue for or against other authors such as Primoratz, Kupfe, Chisholm and Feehan, Pierce, Siegler, and Sartre

I would want to start with
Statement of condition
Untruthfulness of condition
Addressee condition
The intention to deceive the addressee condition
Give some alternative definition of lying

Upon completion of the above categories, and thorough understanding of the nature of ‘lie’ . one would also consider addressing the definition of deception, reading primary source, then one can argue against or for the definition of deception, as well as giving readers or listeners alternative definition of deception..

You can see how foolishness leads us to come to a conclusion of something we cannot even define, and quite often semantics get us into trouble not only with our inner mind, but also with others. Dear reader, consider to uphold your judgment about lying or lie until you reach conclusive and satisfactory definition of lie.

I once had a highly influential client who came to see for philosophical counselling. He had an issue with lie and truth, and therefore, he was suffering from acute anxiety, and quite bewildered to be faced with a moral dilemma for he was married to a noble woman, but also, had a man lover that he was dating for over 18 months. He was quite worried about being found out, about being found out lying as he put it.

Now, the counselling session became more and more intense as you would imagine, and complex in nature as we delved into the definition of lie, truth and semantics. However, upon understanding of the nature of lie, truth, and semantics, after few sessions, I have noticed a marked change in his behaviour, thinking process, and how he started to live a more balanced, happier and blessed life as he put it.

Constructivism
Educational psychologists emphasize on the concept of understanding by using a method called ‘constructivism’. Constructivism reflects an ancient philosophical tradition founded on the premise that, in order to construct comprehension, we must use reflection during and after carrying out certain moral duties in our society, so that we make sense of our world.

Conclusion, in order to reduce or avoid anxieties in any area of our lives, consider understanding the nature of things both on the surface and bottom level. Understanding is the key to help us leave a blessed life.
