A really good question that gets asked almost daily. There’s only fifty thousand volts that run through the probes of a Taser, but there are stun guns that have voltage that go all the way up to one million. Well for starters let’s get something straight here. A lot of people think that tasers and stun guns are one in the same and they are not. A Taser shoots probes and a stun gun does not. Now there is a couple out there that does a dual defense that shoots probes and can be used at close range after the probes have been shot, but the dual defense is becoming obsolete quickly and I wish they wouldn’t.

Now back to the original question, what makes a Taser better than a stun gun? For starters it’s obvious because the advance tasers shoot two probes up to fifteen feet at a speed of a hundred and thirty five feet per second. But yet it only puts out fifty thousand volts between the two probes and a small fry stun gun can put out a million volts. The advanced Taser shuts down the neuromuscular control which interrupts any orders from the brain. The advanced Taser m-18 has almost a 100% effectiveness rating.

Its technology brings far less injury to the assailant like the traditional stun gun but adds the new EMD (Electro-Muscular Disruption) technology. Without this technology the traditional stun gun shuts down the signals from the brain to the muscles. But with the new feature added in the tasers (EMD) it shuts down not only the signal the brain sends it shuts down the central nervous system and bringing great take down power. Some would say that it has greater take down power than a 9mm hand gun.

There are two categories of energy producing non lethal weapons. You have the stun non lethal weapon and the EMD non lethal weapon. The stun non lethal weapon which is your traditional stun gun that operate in a 7-14 watt range and disrupts the signals the nervous system that travels to the muscles. And some people have a high tolerance for electricity which for smaller volts of stun guns has very little effect. Which brings to getting higher voltages stun guns preferably over 500,000 volts is recommended.

Then you have the EMD non lethal weapons that use 18 to 26 watts making the 50,000 volts transferring through the two probes a lot more affective. It has the same effect as the stun gun but with the more wattage makes it for the assailant that has higher tolerance for electricity much harder to uphold. With the advanced feature of the EMD shutting down the nervous system on top of the disruption from the brain to the muscle makes its stopping power amazing.

The stun gun is a huge defense but not worth taking a chance with lower voltage stun guns. Make sure you have no less than a 500,000 volt stun gun if you choose to carry one. It increases your chance of taking the assailant down and always have a second defense ready if not a third when protecting yourself or another. I’m talking like pepper spray and personal alarms. You never know when one might fail for you, its only technology and technology fails all the time.

Being in a situation not knowing if your going to die or not is not a good time to have it fail so always have a backup for protection. Pepper spray can keep you out of harms way and unlike the taser that shoots probes up to feet feet the stun gun has to be used at close range and should be a second defense to pepper spray or a taser.
