One of the first steps in pursuing a more successful future is to create goals for yourself. It may surprise you that many people don’t really even have goals. They just float through life and just accept what comes their way. Not surprisingly, these people have little to no chance of ever becoming successful when they approach life in this way.

It may also surprise you that many people who believe they have set goals in their life really haven’t done so the right way and reduce their chances of ever achieving those goals! This can create a lot of bitterness, or even resentment later in life when they look back and see so few of their so-called goals having come true.

I don’t want to see this happen to you and know that you can learn to set more effective goals for both your personal and professional parts of your life! Most successful people create their own destiny and they use the power of effective goals as a critical part of their success.

In order to achieve the kind of success that I know you are capable of, it is critical to have an outcome or an end result in mind. So, what I want you do is ask yourself the following:

‘What am I hoping to achieve in life?’

‘Why is it that I desire to become more successful?’

Have you ever asked yourself these questions before? Answering these questions allows you to set goals that are consistent with who you are and where you want to go.

Knowing why you want to achieve greater success is very important. To know this reflects who you are and is a good foundation for setting effective goals. This of course brings up a good question: ‘What is a goal?’

By definition, a goal is simply ‘a result one is attempting to achieve’. Look at that definition closely because I don’t think a very success-minded person wrote it. With a success-minded approach to life, you’re not going to attempt to do anything! You will just be doing what you need to do.

Ask yourself, ‘Do successful people ‘try’ to do things? Do they dismiss things they couldn’t do because they at least ‘tried’?’ I don’t think so! Most successful people rarely, if ever, try to do anything! They just do what must be done and accept nothing less.

Along my own journey to success, I’ve seen many women who accepted the place where they were in life because they had at least tried to better themselves. Trying is nothing more than a weak explanation for and an acceptance of failure! If that seems harsh, know that this is something that I passionately believe.

When you properly establish effective and powerful goals that are founded on solid principles, you will end up doing what you need to do to get where you want, rather than just trying. Why? Because they are your goals, and founded on your belief system, you will not accept failure as an option!
