We are very lucky to have a home in this area. It's grand and relaxing. And although our home is an older one, it has the greatest outdoor, covered deck attached to the house just off the living room. Most of our time is spent on the deck, having our meals or just relaxing in our chairs gazing out on the woods and greeneries surrounding our home.It is my favorite place of the house to be.

It became apparent to us while we were re-polishing our deck lately that our house had no emergency exit. In case of fire, or earthquake or the need to leave the house quickly, there was no escaping especially if we were on the deck that stands 30 feet above the ground. There was only one way out and it was through the door going inside the house. We would be caught inside if fire or other emergency had struck in that portion of the house. We discussed about other options, my hubby and I. We did not like stairs for the reason that it will only invite unwanted guests. As a result, other areas were considered before settling on which is the best fire escape option. We decided on an escape ladder that hooks over the railing of the deck or a windowsill. So that it won't be difficult for us having to carry it in case of emergency, we just had it ready on deck.

Approximately 20,000 people are injured every year in household fires, with over 4,000 losing their lives. Loss of life would have been reduced if people have been prepared with their escape plan.

Keep in mind on what means can aid you to get away if fire struck your place. The most crucial factor in an emergency is time. Less than 30 seconds is all it needs for a small flame to go ablaze, and only few minutes for smoke to fill up the house and bring the house down.

Some suggestions on being prepared to escape in an emergency are to have an escape plan in place and practice once a month to be sure you will know what to do. If you have pets, kids, old people or disabled persons in the house, they have a vital role in your escape plan. Provide at least two options for an escape route in every room, install collapsible ladders for high rise houses or apartments. Each person living in the house should know how to open the windows and release the security bars surrounding it in case of emergency, so make sure that the windows and bars are not stuck. Think of smoke hoods, they might be useful. Keep your flashlight close. Smoke detectors on every floor in the house are recommended. Once you place them, keep their batteries in good condition.

Your life comes first above all material things. So if it happens that your house is caught on fire, secure yourself and do not waste time saving your possessions as this may take your life.Immediately leave the home, taking the safest route. Each family member must go to your elected assembly place to determine if everyone has gotten out of the house and that nobody was harmed. Dial 911 after you got out. Do not attempt to go back inside the burning house.

Some of these tips are not complicated so if you just adhere to it, your life and your loved ones will be spared from danger.

This time, we already know what to do in case there's an emergency. We also have our emergency ladder to aid us, so there is nothing to worry about while we are on deck!
