Battling Tinnitus - Stop the Ringing in Your Ears

Tinnitus, commonly known as buzzing or ringing in the ears can be very disturbing. Tinnitus is a persistent sound in the ears without an external source. Some people experience temporary tinnitus but some have constant tinnitus that it interferes with their daily lives. Severe tinnitus can be very disabling as it may interfere with one's focus or concentration on doing things and it may also disturb one's sleep. Some people even suffer from anxiety and depression due to the dilemma of tinnitus. People battling tinnitus want to regain the silence and stop the ringing in their ears.
Tinnitus can interfere with one's hearing. Although tinnitus does not cause hearing loss, they sometimes occur together. Many factors may contribute to the occurrence of tinnitus, thus it is often hard to pin point what exactly causes it to occur. Causes may include side effects of medications, lack of sleep, too much stress, ear wax, head and neck injury and exposure to loud noises. There are studies that tinnitus is most common to men and those working in noisy environment. Battling tinnitus could be a real challenge but it can be very helpful if you know what to do. The following tips can be very helpful in dealing with the ringing in your ears or tinnitus.
See a doctor. If you are experiencing persistent tinnitus, you should see a doctor. ENT or an Otolaryngologists is the doctor for ears, nose and throat problems. Your doctor can make proper diagnosis of your condition with regards to your medical history and physical exam. A hearing test maybe required by your doctor. The test can be done by an audiologist, a person trained to perform hearing test. Do not fail to inform your doctor if you are taking any medication, there are hundreds of medications that can cause tinnitus. Tinnitus can be a symptom of a medical condition. There are many diseases that can cause tinnitus that is why it is best to see your doctor once you experienced persistent buzzing or ringing in your ears. Your doctor may also prescribe the use of devices to make tinnitus less noticeable. In battling tinnitus, you need the aid of your doctor.
Protect your ears. Loud noises are the common cause of tinnitus so avoid loud noises such as gunshots, loud music and noises from power tools. If you are working in a noisy environment protect your ears by wearing ear plugs or earmuffs. Total silence may make your tinnitus more noticeable, the best thing you can do is listen to pleasant sounds or nature sounds like the sound of water.
Lifestyle change. If you are a person who usually work late at night, lacks sleep, smoke, drinks alcohol and have unhealthy habits, this is the time to change your lifestyle. Battling tinnitus can be very hard if you are living an unhealthy life. There are studies that stress has a direct link to tinnitus so reduce your stress. Avoid staying very late at night and get enough sleep to relieve stress and give your body the time to repair itself. Damaged cells during daytime are repaired while we sleep at night. We are required to sleep not less than 7 or 8 hours a day so make it a habit to get enough sleep. Maintain good blood circulation, avoid unnecessary weight gain and become healthier by exercising regularly or keeping an active life. You are what you eat so eat nutritious food to maintain a healthy body and mind. Avoid unhealthy habits like alcohol drinking, smoking and high consumption of caffeine. Battling tinnitus is bearable if you are living a healthy lifestyle.
Battling tinnitus can be really challenging but there are ways to make living with tinnitus easier.
