TRUE Leadership™

The art of leadership has been studied for centuries. Countless theories exist and thousands of books have been written on the topic. People pay top-dollar to learn leadership skills at seminars to enhance their careers. Businesses invest millions of dollars annually to train their employees to become better leaders. Why so much focus on leadership? It’s simple, success follows leadership.

I learned the meaning of being a leader at the age of eighteen, when I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Unparalleled leadership skills are taught to all Marines, not just a select few. These skills helped us to meticulously follow orders, accomplish our mission, and stay alive. In business, a lack of leadership can cost money. In combat, it can cost lives. By developing leaders, the Marine Corps has been the most elite organization in our armed services for over 230 years.

Imagine the growth you would experience in your career, as you develop the leader within you. In today’s uncertain job market, you need an edge to survive. But you will need more than that to thrive. To enhance your career, enhance your leadership skills. Every organization benefits by having a leader on board, regardless of the job they were initially hired for. A leader will exceed the expectations of their position, inspire others to do the same, and will be promoted to higher levels of responsibility.

Although most would agree that becoming a better leader would enhance their careers, many do not know where to start. You’re probably not going to enlist in the Marine Corps to enhance your career, so let’s look at a few fundamental ways to immediately develop your leadership skills.

To achieve something, you must first define it. Leadership can mean different things to different people. That’s why you may experience various styles of leadership, from various types of leaders. To guarantee that success, I have defined leadership in a way that I can apply to all areas of my life; personally and professionally. I call it TRUE Leadership™.

TRUE Leadership™ - the process of influence, in which a TRUE Leader™ can enlist the support of other team members in the successful accomplishment of a common goal.

Leaders are essential for growth. Any organization, focused on growing, will seek out those who can understand and apply The Four Characteristics of a TRUE Leader™:

1. Trustworthy – takes on tasks
2. Reliable – accomplishes objectives
3. Unwavering – stays the course
4. Exceptional – exceeds any expectations

A trustworthy leader instills faith in others that important tasks will be completed with the highest level of integrity. A reliable leader displays the ability to accomplish the overall objective (the big picture) of the organization. An unwavering leader will remain on target with tasks and objectives, no matter what circumstances arise. An exceptional leader will deliver results that not only hit the goal, but raise the bar.

When you enhance your career with leadership, success will follow in your personal life, as well. Anyone can be a TRUE Leader™. Although some people seem more natural at it, no one is born with it. Like everything else, leadership is a learned behavior. It will not happen on its own. Starting today, make the choice to become a TRUE Leader and enhance your career… success will follow.
