Metabolism is the process which breaks down what you consume - carbohydrates, proteins and fat, in order to give your body the energy it needs. The rate at which it breaks down these compounds is partly based on your genes, but is also greatly determined by how your amount of calories intake versus calories burnt. Therefore, in order to boost your metabolism, you need to increase the amount of energy your body needs. The following are several good and easy ways to increase your metabolism.

Firstly, one of the easiest ways to increase your body's need for energy is by exercising. The more muscle you build, the more energy your body will need to maintain itself, thus burning more calories passively. Simply by building five to ten pounds of lean muscle, your resting metabolism will be boosted. You can even continue to burn calories after your exercise routine by performing short intervals of high intensity exercises during your work-out.

Whatever you do - stay active. If you want to keep your metabolism up and burning calories, keep moving!

Next, you need to eat often and to eat well. Eat every few hours in order to stimulate your metabolism and keep it running. By eating frequently throughout the day your body will recognize that it is getting its nutrients and it will not be forced to store fat. Take note though, that your overall calorie intake should still be less than that you burn off through your exercising. Increase your metabolism throughout the day with frequent, smaller meals and healthy snacks.

Although I just recommended you to eat more often, it does not mean pigging out all day on chips and sweets. You should eat foods that will rev up your metabolism rather than slow it down. The best way to boost your metabolism is by consuming high protein foods, as protein requires more energy to break down. High-fiber foods are also great for this purpose. Finally, drink lots of water! Your body needs water to process the calories and dehydration will slow down your metabolism.

Remember that your body and life are in your control. Stop blaming your genetics or slow metabolism any longer - take action and you will start seeing results soon! There are no secret recipes to weight loss; the key is to make a lifestyle change, with two very simple, fundamental ingredients: a good exercise routine and a healthy diet. Using these tools, you are well on your way to boosting your metabolism and having a healthier lifestyle.
