The demands of a job can become stressful when there are inadequate directions that are made by management to deliver work with unclear requirements and a deadline that is very unreasonable. People work late, do not get enough sleep, and are becoming unhappy in their work environment. The economy has caused a lot of pressures on organizations to remain competitive and this has lead to reduction in force (RIF) and layoffs in many firms in several industries. All of these factors have contributed to a workforce that is stressed and over worked. This unhealthy trend of the work environment and the economy are having negative consequences on employee morale and health. It is up to companies and people to be mindful of these factors and start creating a work environment that supports productivity and the betterment of the workforce. Here are some suggestions that management can implement in their organizations to improve the workplace:

Implement Employee wellness programs

Companies are implementing wellness programs to help their workforce deal with personal and work related issues that are affecting their health. These programs are beneficial to people that feel that they want to live healthy lives and may need help for any tough times that they may be going through. They offer services such as discounts at your neighborhood gym, friendly athletic competitions, giving flu shots, health checks, and any other health related services that they decide are important for their workforce.

Create a culture of caring

A very important differentiator for organizations is their corporate culture and the ideologies that they advocate to their workforce. Remember that companies are made up of people and people are the greatest assets for any assembled group that provides a service or develops a product. People need to believe in the corporate values of the organization to be motivated in performing their work at optimal levels of performance. Organizations need to create a culture of caring by taking care of their employees, being involved in helping the community, and being a leader in the world that is a good corporate citizen supporting initiatives that helps society. Companies develop partnerships to sponsor nonprofit organizations and provide opportunities for their employees to participate with others in the company on causes that are important to them.

Leadership

Having strong management at all levels of the organization that inspire people to perform their work with pride is extremely critical in developing a work environment that supports employee growth. Employees will stay in organizations long term if they believe in the corporate values of the organization, have opportunities to move up in the company, and have good managers. This is why leadership is a fundamental component for building a work environment that will contribute to the success of employees. Employees need to feel that their best interest is taken care of by management and that their work efforts will be rewarded by the company.

Implement a flexible work schedule

Having a workplace policy that allows for flexible work schedules and telecommuting options can go a long way in establishing a work environment that is friendly for people that need to balance work, family, and possibly school that supports employee growth.
