The first thing anyone should focus upon when starting their business is their niche. But for some reason, most entrepreneurs skip right over this step. It is one of the most critical things you will ever do in business for the mere fact you are focusing your marketing efforts, therefore increasing your profits.

First, where does someone begin to focus their marketing efforts? If your target is everyone you are basically throwing money at a huge wall and hoping something sticks.
Second, you are an expert at nothing. Yes, nothing. People see you as a generalist and not a specialist. To be known at something you must let people know you are the expert. One way of doing this is the type of clients or patients that you see.

Third, you are most likely taking people just for the money. Watch what happens to clients you really don’t care to work with. They most likely will not stay. Clients pick up on your energy and if you are truly not passionate about helping and serving them, they will leave or not even sign up in the first place.

Fourth, it is difficult to refer clients to you? For example, if you say you’re a health coach vs. a health coach that works with ADHD children and their families, it makes a big difference for the person you are talking to. There are a million health coaches out there, but when you are very specific, you can see their wheels turning. Remember, they may not be your target market, but they may know of someone who is in your niche.

It is imperative that if you do not have niche is to take time and figure it out. There is not one successful business out there that has skipped this step. A great way to begin this process is to use Google Ad Words. No you do not have to purchase Ad Words, but you can use this free resource to do some great research to find out what words people are using to search for something. What if people come to you that are outside of your niche. Of course take them, but only if you like to work with that type of customer. Do not take them out of scarcity because you need money. Increasing income and increasing profits should be any business owners focus and having a target market is key to seeing your business grow.
