J Paul Getty said that a man with a burning desire and just an average ability would be a winner every time. His premise was that if a person is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, then they would eventually achieve them. Are you willing?

Many people start out with a vague picture of what is necessary to achieve their goals. That picture needs to be clarified, if they really hope to be winners. If there is something specific that you want to do with your life, take the time, right now, to draw up a plan.

At the end of the plan is your goal, whatever that may be. Try to make your goal as specific as possible. “I want to be rich” is not a specific goal. “I want to get rich by writing a best-selling how-to book” is more specific. To be very specific, the goal would also include the topic of that how-to book.

Your ultimate goal should be at the top of your page. Beneath that heading, you would write down the steps that will be necessary to achieve that goal.

For example, someone that wants to write a best-selling book must first write it. Writing takes time. As busy as our lives are today, it could be difficult to make time to write the book, unless the author has a burning desire to do so.

It may require rearranging work schedules or giving up a favorite TV show. It might require getting the kids to do some of the chores, while mom or dad writes. It usually takes a bit of creativity to simply schedule time to work on your ultimate goals, especially if you are working for a living. But, there is always a way.

Everyone has had some moment of success in their lives. If you think about those successes, you will realize that, at the time, nothing else was more important to you. You had a burning desire to succeed.

Of course, desiring something is only a part of the equation. It’s a big part, but it is only a piece of the puzzle. One of the other things that successful people do is “visualize”. How will you feel when you achieve your goal? What will your life be like? Visualization can help make your goal a reality.

If you start acting as though you have already achieved your goal, you should see your life start changing, for the better. And, if you have that burning desire, very soon, you will achieve your goals.
