Out of all the goals and objectives, most people really just want to feel happy and fulfilled; to feel good. And the question most people have is…how do I do that? How do I know what will make me happy? How do I choose the right path? After all, you can have all the desire and energy in the world, but without focus, you feel scattered , like you’re spinning your wheels.
So, how do you find focus? To start with, step back from the situation. Relax. Finding focus is less about worksheets and charts and more about taking the time to listen to your different parts and pieces. So schedule a 15-30 minute date with yourself, or if you’re too busy, schedule time while you have busy-work and your mind is free- like laundry or dishes.
What’s next? Direct your thoughts to the opportunities available today, this week, this month, this year. For me, I’m a list-maker. When I don’t know what to do next, I sit down and make a list of every direction I could go, from the sublime to the practical. You may prefer a storyboard or file folder. But here’s the kicker, you don’t have to do anything about what you write down or pull together. The process of writing a list, making a storyboard, filling a file folder stirs your creative juices. The structure lets your creative mind soar free and helps you hear which opportunities feel most natural.
Lastly, from the opportunities that call to you, decide on the first 2-3 things you need to do. Don’t go any further ahead than that. Look at the very simplest first few steps. If you’d like to start a business, maybe think of a name. Grow more clients? Read an article on marketing. When you think too far ahead, you get lost in the details and if you’re like most people, end up procrastinating.
The universe is sneaky. Everything you want to create, starts with a thought. When you think the thought enough times, you create a reality. What if your deepest intentions have always been peace, joy and fulfillment? Have you already created pockets of that in your life? What might be the easiest way to achieve those feelings in the reality you live in right now? Happiness relies more on state of mind than goals achieved.
So, should you focus on the tasks or should you focus on your deepest goals and intentions? You may just find that with a few mental tweaks, you’ve already created the life you’re looking for. One with friends, people you love and positive contributions to the world. Think about it.
At the end of the day, your real goal is to feel happy and fulfilled. All the rest is just the vehicle you use to do it. One vehicle is generally the same as another. Pick a path that you like and stay flexible when the situations change- and they will.
Question to Self: What can I do today that brings me happiness? Be nice to a co-worker? Daydream? Check something off of a task list?
Activity: Ponder one upcoming difficult situation today and think about what you could do to make it more enjoyable? You don’t have to act upon it, simply muse about it and let your creative self take care of the rest. Check in with yourself later and see if the eventual outcome was more positive than normal.
