Addressing issues can be challenging for many of us. Many times we either ‘fight’ or ‘fly’ depending on how we were raised and how we saw our families of origin deal with conflict. ‘Fighting’ and ‘flying’ both lead to alienation and are aggressive and passive behaviors respectively. When we are passive in dealing with conflict we may feel powerless to change what we consider a ‘hostile dynamic’ so we react by withdrawing, retreating or hiding. This often results in blocks to communication.

I believe that the reality is very different. I first heard the phrase “act as if” about fifteen or twenty years ago. Recently, when I hiked among a grove of amazing redwood giants in Yosemite National Park, their stories revealed powerful lessons about surviving. Might the wisdom gleaned from the oldest and largest living organisms on the planet be relevant for us during these challenging times?

If you’re anything like me you’ve probably spent more time than you’d like to admit trying to “fix” your various “flaws.” Although I may pretend otherwise, many of my own goals, desires, and even my motivation to “grow” has often come from a deep place of insecurity within me - thinking that if I could just fix what was wrong with me, then everything would be okay.

How healthy are your boundaries? Maybe you think about this directly and often, maybe not. Boundaries weren’t something I personally spent much time thinking about for many years. I’ve often related to the concept of boundaries in a negative way. Of course I’ve known they’re important, especially in the context of parenting, relationships, and work, but the idea of having clear and specific boundaries had sometimes seemed limiting or restrictive to me.

We all know that the direct path to a strong, healthy and lean body is eating right and exercising. If you don’t know this yet – surprise! So, if most of us know how beneficial regular exercise is, why are so many of us still not doing it? Well for one it takes time and energy that we often convince ourselves we don’t have enough of (you’ll see the irony in this shortly). Secondly, let’s face it - initially it’s very uncomfortable. How many people do you know get excited about going to the dentist or about cleaning out the garage? Precisely.

You’re alive and breathing but are you living? I’m sure you have a routine that works for you and I’m guessing it goes something like this ‘work, eat, sleep, eat, work, sleep’. Well you are not alone! Most people are stuck in this humdrum cycle because, let’s face it, society has structured things in such a way that it quite challenging to break free from the daily grind of obligations, pressures, expectations, deadlines, responsibilities. Or is it?

In one of the Harry Potter books Harry comes face to face with a mirror in which he sees his parents staring back at him. He longs to stay with the mirror to continue to see his parents and Professor Dumbledore tells him he must stop. This mirror shows exactly what the viewer wants to see instead of what is. You view your life through such a mirror.

If not aggressive, what? You miss all the shots you don't take, you have to engage to win, you have to engage to practice and learn. Whom do you admire? Someone who sits on the sidelines? Whom do you respect? Someone who never does anything? Who is fun to be with?

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve put off until tomorrow what I should have and could have done today. It wasn’t until I learned how to overcome the tendency to procrastinate that my life began to change drastically for the better. Soon I began to have more energy, significantly greater success, better health and I was calmer and happier. Below are the top five methods I used to finally put an end to procrastination.

I work with a lot of people who are often in conflict with people they work, or aspire to work with, or in their personal relationships. Time and again I see people become frustrated, angry, and hostile, all a result of having fixed and expectations of one another. Some hold onto and wear their resentment like a badge of honor. It's an exhausting way to live. Helping people recognize and reframe these control-based expectations is essential to real movement toward agreement, better experiences and overall emotional intelligence growth.

Before I begin talking about affirmations and how to use them to assist you in your weight loss journey, I want to briefly discuss mindset. Fear is defined as a distressing emotion. It’s aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc. It doesn’t matter if the threat to us is real or imagined; that feeling is real! When those feelings are imagined, we stir them up with our thoughts. We can shift those thoughts and choose to focus on others, even conjure up pleasant memories to influence our emotions. I’m not suggesting ignore your feelings. They are strong indices of how things are and how you are. Acknowledge them; pay attention to them and learn from them. Often, strong feelings can be predictors of what’s to come.

I have been so excited and inspired by this year's baseball post-season and the big World Series victory by the San Francisco Giants. As a Bay Area native, a lifelong baseball fan, and someone who has been fortunate enough to have the Giants as a client this year, of course I was rooting for them with passion. This campaign and this election have exposed many issues in our country and our world...issues that have been there for a very long time, and although we've made progress on them through the years, it's time for real change and we're a big part of that.

Most people don't really know what they want, because they are so focused on what isn't working in their lives, and, they don't give themselves the time or permission to dream about it getting better. Lists are handy to help you stay organized. But, what if your list leads you into overwhelm instead of focus, achievement, and fulfillment? One of my newsletter readers emailed that he was not able to focus or move forward on any of his goals, and included a list of almost thirty items he’d written down for himself, and added there was more not included. He felt overwhelmed, and this left him stuck in place. I looked at the list and immediately saw why he felt this way.

This morning I found Me talking to Myself. This does happen from time to time and I believe part of it may be due to my Bipolar Affective Disorder. But I also believe most of us talk to ourselves from time to time. Often times the words are just comments we would probably prefer to keep to ourselves. Still it is often hard for me to tell if it’s an inner or outer dialogue I am experiencing.r

The Habit of Breaking the Habit Yes I say there is a habit to breaking habits. And with every habit we posses there most often is a ritual, or process, we follow. I have broken many habits from the physical to the psychological. First let me say that with every habit I broke the experience was only as difficult as I perceived it to be.

Rejection can be very painful and if our self-esteem isn’t where it should be ideally (and many of ours isn’t) then rejection can throw us a devastating blow. The ability to handle rejection without turning it inward, attacking ourselves with thoughts of unworthiness and losing our ability to think rationally is not something one can find a quick fix to. The ability to deal courageously with rejection happens naturally as we build up our self-esteem by beginning to love and accept ourselves.

Instead of seeing our beauty, we focus on what we believe are our negative qualities making it more difficult to feel confident and fulfilled in our lives. Without going too much into why, let’s briefly look at the culture we were brought up in. Television ads, magazines, radio, movies. Every day, we are bombarded with messages of what we SHOULD look like.

If you ever feel your focus is faulty, check your commitment. But, also look at what else is going on in your life.

The soul loves to forgive! Catherine Ponder said: "When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.” Forgiveness is something that needs to be learned. I taught myself the art of forgiveness so that I could move beyond the pain and hurt that others had caused me.

What is risk and why is it something to be feared, to be avoided?

Coaches often ask me to relate what I think is the most powerful coaching question to ask a client. Now the question itself seems like an anomaly to me since there couldn’t be just one question which would be powerful for all clients - or could there? And what if there were, what would it be? (You can almost hear my inner coach jumping up and down with my own limiting belief here!)

Everywhere you look; in magazines, newspapers, online and televised articles and bios of people who face challenges are examples of people who have moved beyond their challenges to create extraordinary lives. There are also plenty of examples of those who have literally and figuratively destroyed everything they have achieved. In every inspiring success story lies the common denominator of an examined life and a recapture of personal power, authenticity.

We can teach others how to treat us, but others also reflect to us how we treat ourselves (self-value), which is often a more subtle dynamic. Do you see how this creates a loop? Let’s bypass childhood and more extreme scenarios, as both of those are different conversations. Let’s consider you’re an adult living a non-extreme life.

If you’re not experiencing infinite abundance, there’s a good reason it’s not your “reality” yet. The reason relates to a riddle. The challenge is like the riddle: which came first, the chicken or the egg? In this case it’s which comes first, measurable proof that you’re infinitely abundant or faith that it’s your natural state? The answer for both riddles is the same: the thought or idea of it comes first. We entangle ourselves with a “chicken and egg” cycle about infinite abundance.

The most important conversation you will ever have is the one between you and You. The you that sees, smells, tastes, touches and hears (the here and now you) and the You that exists inside of you. Call the "Within You" whatever you like - life, consciousness, spirit, higher self, your subconscious mind... you know where I'm going with this yes? Yes.

You're blocked, stuck in your creative expression and flow, and it doesn't feel good. You hate being in this emotional state. In your despair you give attention, energy and focus to your block thereby strengthening the very block you wish to overcome. And you feel worse. You are literally and figuratively chocked in either your despair or anger over not being able to create what you are here to express, what is your purpose in life. "Every artist writes his own autobiography." Havelock Ellis May I suggest you stop blocking and literally chocking your own creative expression?

I often hear people are talking about the universe, how the universe is assisting them or what universe is providing for them. I even saw many web pages with domain names such as “Note from the Universe”, or “You and the Universe” and so on… I am not against people’s relationship to the “Universe”. I even agree with the wisdom and influence of the, so called, Universe, but from the point of view of personal responsibility, just hanging out there waiting for “Universe” to do something for me is just not enough, nor is it realistic.

For many, mainstream is like a tailored suit; for some, it’s like a straightjacket. Are you swimming in the wrong stream or against the current? Mainstream, in this writing, means demonstrating via your life, work, relationships, etc., an “acceptable” model or role model, as much as possible—a model that is allowed some leeway as long as it’s a composite of descriptions provided by the various prevalent social, religious, and educational systems and models, as well as family and cultural descriptions or models.

Are you someone who has bad things constantly happening to you? Do you possibly wind up meeting horribly evil people who rip you off or stab you in the back? Are you always trying to make ends meet? I hope not. I hope you’re a person who is happy in life, has more than enough, and you’re surrounded by everyone and everything that brings you joy. I hope life for you is a bowl of cherries. Honestly I do. However, if that is you, this article isn’t for you.
