1. Do NOT use the elevator. Walking up and down seven flights of stairs ten times a day will burn more than just a few calories!

2. Check out the menu and write down what you plan to eat. This is posted outside the dining room each morning or about an hour or so before each meal, so it's easy to drift by and write out your choices.

3. There is always a tremendous buffet. Really get into the lighter food - a fabulous meal of all those delicious tropical fruits is a real treat. Or else a salad, go easy on the dressings, cheese and cold meats. Just think you have the whole cruise to sample things, you don't have to put it all on one plate and eat it in one sitting.

4. The Captains Cocktail Party is a minefield - there's dim lighting with glasses of champagne and lots of fancy hot and cold hors d'oeuvres (and no, it’s not true that if you can't see what you're eating it doesn't count!). Do make sure you're not ravenous before you go in.

5. When you’re in a port of call, walk a lot instead of taking taxis etc. It's a great way to see the place up close and really drink in the sights.

Special thanks to Janetta for these tips on cruising and not gaining!

ONE OF THE COACH'S FAVORITE FITNESS TIPS

If you love croutons on your salad but just don’t want all those extra calories try crushing them in the bag they come in or toss them in a blender to break them up. You can easily use half as many croutons and still have all the flavor! Try the same thing with nuts and other high-calorie toppings .
