Do you want to lose weight, but are either too shy or simply do not have enough money to join the gym? The good news is that you can easily lose weight by working out at home with little to no equipment, and on your own personal schedule to boot. Some basic equipment may be required, however these generally can cost less than even a one month gym membership. This equipment includes dumbbells, exercise balls, skipping ropes, and more.

Swiss Ball Workout

If you want to strengthen your abominals and take care of your back at the same time, why not use a Swiss Ball (also known as a Fitness Ball) to work out? These are ideal for even beginners and can even be done while watching TV.

For those who want to work out their core abdominal muscles, you can kneel down with the ball in front of you and your hands on top of the Swiss Ball. As you tighten your butt and abs, slowly roll the Swiss Ball forwards until your forearms are leaning on the ball. Hold this position for 10 seconds, before rolling back into the original starting position. This should be repeated at least 8 to 12 times.

Those wanting to release any tension located in their lower and middle back can do this technique. As you lay forward over the ball, you can rest your hands and feet on the floor. Just relax your neck and back as you gently rock forwards and backwards for up to 1 minute.

Dumbbell Workouts

Dumbbells can be bought at any sporting goods store, as well as some hypermarkets. Dumbbells can be stored in any corner of the room or even in a cabinet as they are quite small. They work out either your upper body or your lower body.

This particular workout is good for working out your biceps. As you stand up straight, hold a dumbbell in each hand, with your hands shoulder-width apart and your palms facing towards you. Keep your elbows by your sides and curl the dumbbells upwards towards your shoulders, and then slowly lower the dumbbells so that your arms are straight. Believe it or not, just by sitting down during this bicep curl workout will actually add a degree of intensity.

Dumbbell squats are great for working out your butt and legs. Stand up with your feet shoulder-width apart while holding 1 dumbbell. As you keep your back straight, bend your knees and move your hips slightly backwards as your body moves downwards. You should continue to bend downwards until your knees are at 90 degrees, before standing up slowly.

Others

If you simply are unable to afford basic fitness equipment, do not worry as there are plenty of other ways to keep fit at home without having to buy things. Do not ever underestimate the power of items that you would normally have in your home, such as chairs, milk bottles, tin cans, and stairs. Some workouts do not even require equipment such as squats, push ups, calf raises, and tricep dips.
