Split ends are not the most well known of all health and beauty afflictions. The split ends meaning or “trichoptilosis” is when the actual hair fiber splits. The thing is that this split can happen not just at the end of the natural hair strand, but in its middle or even in multiple locations.

Split ends can arise from a lot of varied sources:

Towel drying one’s hair too rigorously
Too many hair treatments like hair dying and perms
Using heavy hair drying agents
Using hot water to wash your hair
Regularly using heat tools to hair like curlers and hair irons

What’s more, there are actual names for the different splits:

Split—two pronged split
Triple—multiple pronged split
Feather—Multiple pronged split
Incomplete—circular split in the middle of a hair fiber
Deep—Split at the root of the hair
