Is Brahmacharya only celibacy?
Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan says, “The constant awareness of ‘I am a Pure Soul’ is supreme brahmacharya. There is no other bramacharya like that.”

Brahmacharya means charya in Brahma. One who dwells in the Self is on the path of Brahman.
One who is on the path of Brahman, the glow of his Aura of brilliance is apparent, his power of mind is extra-ordinary, his speech is very sweet and his actions win you over. Such are his qualities. A person with the energy of the Self is never deluded or confused, no matter what obstacles come forth in the world. These energies do not manifest right away; it takes time, but it does happen.

As long as there is ignorance of the Self, there is karma, whether we practice celibacy or non-celibacy - celibacy binds good karma and non-celibacy binds bad karma. But when one realizes the Self and remains as the Self, one attains liberation in just one lifetime then. Self-Realization can be attained from 'Gnani Purush'!!! There is no end to bliss when there is Self-Realization on one side and celibacy on the other.

However for those married, Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan specifies, “For the one who is married, I have made just one rule, and that is that he must not look at any other woman sexually. And if that happens, then do pratikraman (heart-felt repentance) and decide never to let it happen again. This is the definition of a married brahmachari!”

If it Means on the Path of Brahman, does it also include Vegetarianism, Ahimsa, Etc?
One who practices brahmacharya, is generally already practicing ahimsa to a great extent because only a mind that is filled with negativity such as anger, hatred and animosity succumbs to violence and harms others. One on the path of Brahman is a seeker of peace.

The energy of the Self flows towards the interest and desire of the owner. Initially, one’s desire is in ice-cream, etc., but not in Soul. However, when the transformation begins from the worldly path to the path of liberation, the interest and desire towards worldly life starts dying down and the focus is more and more on the Soul.

Thus, for the One on the path of Brahman, the direction of the ‘like’ has changed. And it’s a given rule that when happiness is not taken from external things, the bliss within is manifested. So vegetarianism mostly is the case.

Eating non-vegetarian food, otherwise too is harmful for one’s spiritual development. One on the path of Brahman is always looking for ways to develop his spiritual grasping more and more. Whereas non-vegetarian food leads to coverings on the Soul, as a consequence of which spiritual grasping would reduce. Suppose there is a big light bulb and if you put some coverings, will the rays of light come out? No, because of the coverings the light does not come out.

Moreover, when any living being is slaughtered, how miserable it feels? It becomes fearful and experiences great pain and suffering while dying. Later, as we consume those atoms through non-vegetarian food, that fear, pain and suffering arises in us too. One who is on the path of Brahman is sincerely persevering to come out of all fear, pain and suffering. Then how can he get all of that in? Therefore, even if one is eating non-vegetarian, when he takes on the path of Brahman, he comes out of the practice of eating meat and eats only vegetarian food.

Such a person does not consume wine, alcohol, drugs or any other intoxicant too. To prepare alcohol, they do fermentation. This gives rise to a lot of organisms, which die when squeezed in processing. And since that juice is what we drink in the form of alcohol, one can imagine what happens to his awareness. On the path of Brahman, one’s constant endeavour is to come out of all unconsciousness and remain in full and constant awareness of “I am a Pure Soul.” But with intoxicants, one even forgets that ‘I am John.’

Therefore, one on the path of Brahman consciously abstains from all those things that ruin one’s awareness; and he tries to abide by the five major vows given by the Lord:
1.Non-violence,
2.Not telling lies,
3.Not stealing.
4.Brahmacharya
5.Aparigraha (no possessions).

Author's Bio:

Ambalal M. Patel was a civil contractor by profession. In June 1958, spontaneous Self-Realization occurred within Ambalal M. Patel. From this point on, Ambalal became a Gnani Purush, and the Lord that manifest within him became known as Dada Bhagwan. A Gnani Purush is One who has realized the Self and is able help others do the same. Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan used to go from town to town and country-to-country to give satsang (spiritual discourse) and impart the knowledge of the Self, as well as knowledge of harmonious worldly interactions to everyone who came to meet him. This spiritual science, known as Akram Vignan, is the step-less path to Self-realization.
