One of the top ways to save on your energy bill is to build a solar panel. It is really effortless to build a 60w solar panel and most of the items are easily offered at your local hardware store. For this example we will be creating a 60w smaller panel but you can make any size (watts) really when you’ve mastered how to create your first one.

The solar cells you purchase for this project will most likely be the largest expense of the project.Use the internet to find bargains for your solar cells. When you purchase solar cells (on the web) check how they will be packaged and sent as they are fragile. It is recommended to be dipped in wax for transporting but this will call for some work on your behalf to clean the wax off before use.

To start you can purchase some timber to make a shallow box.Make sure that it will be big enough to hold 36 solar cells.Put vent holes on the sides of the box as well.

For a really wonderful step-by-step diy guide to building your own solar panels with full colour pictures and plenty of video showing you how, be sure to have a look at Earth4Energy. Earth4energy is my no.1 all-favorite guide for building Solar or Wind power. It is really easy to follow and is great for beginners as well. Here is my Earth4energy Review

Completely assemble the box and then paint the box on all sides including the inside.Any colour will do just fine.If the solar cells were dipped in wax when shipped we need to spend some time now cleaning them. Heat 2 pots of water until boiling point, one with soap and one without. First place the cells in the plain hot water and let the wax soften then transfer to the soapy water pot to clean off residue.Remember do not throw any of the water in both pots out into the sink as when this mixture cools it can clog up your drain.

Next you will solder those cells, placing 2 of them together, then adding another in series. Soldering the cells can be tricky that’s why I recommend Earth4Energy’s Guide to help with that. Glue them now to the board with a bit of of silicon in the middle of the cells. When it comes time to turn the board over you may have a bit of a time, but try and get someone to help out.

Use of copper braiding or regular wire will be okay to connect the cells.Remember at this stage to test the cells and make sure they are working. Use of a volt meter will work perfectly.

It is important to connect a blocking diode. The diode is recommended for the cloudy days or night time to avert the battery from discharging.Running of the wires to the outside of the box, and placing your plugs for the switch should be completed.

Last step, cover the box with plexiglass and test before connecting it where you will require it.
