Many people, especially women, suffer from self-hatred and don’t even realize it. Self-hatred is probably the main cause of low self-esteem and lack of self confidence. Self-hatred also causes obesity, other eating disorders and health issues.

Recognizing Self-Hatred
The first step in overcoming self-hatred is recognizing it. Whenever you think or say a negative thought about yourself, such as “I’m ugly”, “I’m too fat”, “I’m not good enough” or “I couldn’t possibly do [insert dream or goal you want to reach here]”, is actually self-hatred. Some of you may have even come to the point where you’re not speaking negative things about yourself; however you are still thinking them, which continues to have negative effects in your life. So, begin by taking a mental note of your thoughts when you look in the mirror or any other time throughout the day.

How to Stop Hating Yourself
If you hear yourself thinking anything along the lines of “I’m ugly”, “I’m not thin enough”, “Look at this ugly cellulite” or whatever the negative thoughts are, stop them immediately. Don’t allow the negative thought to continue and then turn the negative thought into a positive one. For example, as soon as you catch yourself thinking “I’m not pretty enough”, think about a trait of yours that you do like. Perhaps it’s your hair or your eyes. Think about compliments you’ve received from others and focus on those. Then say to yourself, “I do have pretty eyes (or whatever you’ve been complimented on).

Then same thing goes with negative thoughts about your abilities. When you find yourself thinking thoughts like “I could never [insert desire or dream here]”, turn that thought around, into a positive thought, like “I can make $5000 a month” or whatever your desired income or dream is.

Overcoming self-hatred can be done if you have the right tools and support. If you’re in a situation where you’re being fed negative thoughts from someone all the time, it may be more difficult to see yourself any differently, for instance. But, you don’t have to listen to those lies nor do you have to believe them. How you feel about yourself is completely up to you! Stop listening to those negative thoughts and start believing in yourself and seeing the true you, the one that you know is deep inside, yearning to come out.
