Too much of something good is bad, they say. But I have been wondering. Is there such a thing as too much information?

It would be tough going through life without any knowledge whatsoever. It is through information that we base our choices on. Basically, we do the things we do based on the things that we know; differentiating a good deed from an evil one, weighing options by considering the pros and cons, and other stuff like. Well, you get the point, right?

Anyway, my thoughts lead me to the subject on the internet. In this day and age, the internet has become the primary source of information. A hundred sets of encyclopaedia could never compete with the information you can find online.

Most people hold the freedom to information very dearly. But it does not prevent anyone, particularly the government, to introduce bills that aim to censor the internet. Regarding, I would have to say, that I do not see the point in censoring the internet. I mean, sure, I get it that they would want to shut down certain sites like pornographic ones and sites that belong to terrorists and other extremist. However, everything isn’t that simple.

Let me explain a bit more. Many reasons are brought forth as to the subject on internet censorship. But the way I see it, there are only three main ones: political reasons, protection of social norms, and for security reasons.

Of all the reasons presented, I would have to say that the first one irks me the most. Censorship for political reasons mainly occurs in countries where their rulers try to hold on to the power. They see censorship as a way to prevent the people from knowing too much, withholding information from the ordinary laymen so as to prevent any uprising. Of all the reasons, this one I find to be most petty.

On protection of social norms, this one has a point. Take for example, child pornography. Everyone would agree that this subject matter has to be taken seriously. Hence, the censorship. But how about subject matters like religion and homosexuality? Should it be censored just because one’s religion or sexual preferences do not agree with that of the majority? Isn’t that the same as restricting rights?

Last but not least is for security reasons. Now, this one I find to be quite reasonable. However, it must be taken into consideration that most form of censorship falls into more than one category. Thus, giving authorities excuse in extend the censorship. If that were so, wouldn’t it be the same as censoring the rights of people to information?

We must never forget that everything has its pros and cons. I acknowledge the benefits that internet censorship can give. But in my opinion, the dangers of such action carries more weight thus my opposition to the subject.

Speaking of internet, it is a complex system. Recently, I read something about search engine optimization. It is quite interesting really. But I will have to learn more about it. I guess I will have to ask Canada SEO company for that.
