Self-esteem is the personal view that you hold of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Everyone views themselves differently; however, having a positive outlook is more beneficial than a negative one. Many people suffer from a low self-esteem for many different reasons and therefore, need to build their self-esteem so that they can succeed in life. Keep in mind, the one person that can make you excel in life, is you. This is the same principle for self-esteem. Other people may aide in the process, building your self-esteem is your decision in the end.

Individuals suffer from a low self-esteem for many reasons. Some people have a poor body image and therefore, they will focus their attention on all the negatives about their physical appearance. Other people have emotional problems that may have affected their self-esteem to fall or they may feel as though they are not worthy of praise. No matter the reason your self-esteem may falter, the main objective it to build it up and to find what the root of the problem is. Your self-esteem is like a house, if you build a beautiful home on a sand foundation, the structure will eventually fall apart. On the other hand, if you take the time to make sure the foundation is strong and can hold anything, while it may be a slower process, your self-esteem will be on solid ground.

Some people try to find self-esteem help through seminars or books. There are so many options on the market today it is overwhelming, therefore, you are sure to find a topic that will deal with your specific issues. Go to you local library or even a bookstore and head to the "self-help" section for a large selection of books that may be helpful. Of course, you will not find every answer you need in a book, but you may be able to see that other people are in the same situation as you and then you know you are not alone. In addition, there is always professional help available that you can seek out to help improve your self-esteem. Sometimes just speaking with a professional can help you find the root of your problem and work on a plan for rebuilding. Maybe your problems go way back to childhood, or it could have been a recent development. No matter the case, professionals can help you in determining the next step.

One of the main factors in self-esteem is negativity. Negative thoughts can cause your self-confidence to shatter and will lower your self-esteem. If you have a lot of negative people around you or you are in a negative situation, try to remedy the situation. It is common for people in an abusive relationship to have a shattered self-esteem, even when a loved one that is attempting to be supportive ends up belittling you or questions your very worth, it affects your self-worth. Moreover, a person in a negative working environment can also have a lower their self-esteem if their boss or colleagues continually find fault with their work. Perhaps you have a friend that seems to be surrounded consistently with negativity. Wherever the source is coming from, try to distance yourself from all negative sources in order to help build your self-esteem. Look to associate with positive people. If you are in a difficult time personally, opt to join a support group. In addition, there are many support groups for those with self-image issues. A group like this will allow you to meet other people just like you and provide the perfect forum for you to share your achievements and hopes.

Regardless of how to decide to begin to rebuild your self-esteem, you must start today! Be consistent and thorough with the steps and process and know that it may take some time. Do not become impatient or disheartened if your self-esteem begins to slip. Keep in mind that you are important that is a worthy person and you need to treat yourself as such.
