Step 3 - Offer Forgiveness!

You might think this step is about forgiving the other person. That’s what ego would like you to believe, but it’s not. It’s about forgiving yourself for having had the judgments you just listed in Step 2. You see, the ego would like you to forgive, and you can, but it’s easy for ego to take over that process and have, even in the most subtle ways, tinges of “he did me wrong, but I forgive,” or “I’m a better person; I can forgive.” Stuff like that. It’s way better and a whole lot easier to simply forgive yourself. Why?

If you’ve been holding a grievance against someone else, you’ve been holding it against yourself, too. Ego has, anyway. So it’s time to forgive. Forgiveness opens the doorway to love. Try it, you’ll see. Love is standing right behind that door waiting to enter, and all it takes is forgiveness. And the best part is this doesn’t make any sense at all to ego. If you’re reading this now, and it doesn’t make sense, you’re ego is trying to take over. Or maybe it already has. Maybe it’s saying, “I don’t have to forgive myself. I didn’t’ do anything wrong! And I certainly don’t have to forgive that son-of-a-whatever either! No way!” That’s ego speaking, right?

So even if it doesn’t make sense, do it anyway. You may not see until after the fact why this works, but it does. You don’t have to trust me or anyone who tells you this. Just be willing to do it and see for yourself that it works. Because you will.

There have been a good deal of coaches on my weekly show, and as NFL training camps got underway I couldn't help but think of that fateful moment that all players hope to avoid at all costs. It's when they tell you, "Coach wants to see you. And bring your playbook." There are other times when a player gets called into a coach's office, but as we've heard on Catholic Sports Radio, coaches also want to be *there* for you. They can and should be viewed as someone you feel comfor
