We hear it said constantly: “He’s hot!” or “She’s sexy!” What exactly does ‘sexy’ mean?

Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary defines ‘sexy’ as sexually suggestive or stimulating. In other words, sexy can be ‘erotic’. Another synonym is ‘appealing’; as in generally attractive or interesting.

Surely sexiness is in the eyes of the beholder and can be very subjective. Yet, universally, there are a few things about ‘sexy’ which most people would agree upon:

1. Sexy people are confident.

Few people would argue that sexy people come across as confident. In this context, confidence would refer to a state of mind or manner in which there is an easy coolness and freedom from uncertainty, diffidence, or embarrassment. Also, there is a faith in oneself and one’s powers without any suggestion of conceit or arrogance. Additionally, confident people are markedly different from those who are arrogant, obnoxious, or pretend to be humble.

Confident people smile readily, carry themselves with dignity and pride, and walk with their head up high. People tend to find confident people sexy because of their larger than life personality and assertive demeanour.

To become more confident in yourself, one of the first steps is to find out who you really are. In short: inner work. The more you learn about yourself, what you stand for, and what is important to you, the more you come into your own ‘being’ or power.

2. Sexy people take care of themselves.

By this, I do not mean being obsessive/compulsive with their looks. Rather, it is about doing what you can with what you have.

This means taking care of your personal hygiene, the cleanliness of your clothes, external grooming and the like. It also means having a healthy diet, making efforts to achieve work-life balance, and attaining adequate rest. Physical fitness is definitely one of the keys to self-care. Exercise helps us improve our physical appearance and also energizes, allowing us to accomplish more positive things in our lives.

Healthy people who radiate from within are more likely to be sexy and have more sex in their lives.

3. Sexy people are comfortable in their skin.

In my humble opinion, we cannot be ‘sexy’ if we are not comfortable with our bodies. Have you ever noticed how some people might have a ‘beautiful’ face, or be even downright stunning, yet fail to hold your attention? It has everything to do with the way we carry ourselves, from the walk, posture to the gestures.

Examine if you could have any body image issues. Is there any part of your body which you do not like? Should you be making peace with any or all of your body? A big part of being comfortable in your skin is accepting yourself the way you are – short, thin, tall, wide. Having done what you can with what you have, it’s time to embrace your body and even celebrate it.

So I encourage you to first take care of yourself inside and out, then stand tall, and strut your stuff. Unleash your inner sexy!
