Are you blocking relationships too? Somewhere early in life I decided I did not live in a safe world because the people in it could hurt me. And the closer someone got to me, the more likely they could (and would) inflict pain on me. I saw only one solution to this problem. I just can't let anyone get close to me. It's the only way I'm going to survive. I'll pretend when I have to, but deep down inside, there's no way I can let someone into my heart. One of the first movies I ever saw on TV showed a man crying because he couldn't be with the woman he loved.

We know what organizations think motivates people. But the research says money isn’t an effective motivator. By the 1960s researchers were showing that paying employees a miserly wage or salary is an effective way to destroy their motivation, but once you are paying them enough, any additional dollars won’t add much to their drive to succeed. But the news for leaders and trainers is good. Research reveals motivators that cost nothing, are simple to use and provide us with a valuable checklist to make our training more effective.
Have you ever had a so-called friend that turned into your nemesis as time went by and still remained glued to you in some way even though you’ve done all you could think of to push this person out of your life? Have you ever witnessed how some individuals weave themselves into your every relationship, tinting your every gathering with their presence, always finding a way to be invited through some other acquaintances? Short of escaping to another part of the world and cutting all communication with previous contacts, there seems to be no way out!
How do you feel when someone gives you a gift? In particular remember a gift that you have really wanted, or a gift that has been handmade. Or how do you feel when you receive a gift from a child that they have lovingly prepared for you? If you say that you “feel warm and fuzzy”, that you “feel ...

Money! Power! Sex! When we have them, and use them well, they are so much fun. When we donât have them, we have feelings about them. When we misuse them, we have feelings about them. And sometimes we have serious mis-learning around them, and become either abusive or abused with them. As little children, we learn about the world from our grownups. If our grownups have some trouble handling the energies of money, power, and sex, we learn their ways. Some of us learn to push
From my perspective, our emotional wounds don't live in our minds. So healing our minds, as Dr. Eve Woods teaches on her show Healing Your Mind, Body, and Spirit, from September 19, 2006 titled "Rewrite Your Internal Script," does not actually get at the core issue. I find this idea - that somehow we can heal our minds with our thoughts, and that this will take care of the dis-ease that often permeates our lives - to be an all too common misconception.nnOur emotions don't liv
Child Abuse To know about a person's open wound on the outside is obvious. - To treat it we apply a bandage and some TLC To know about a person's open wound on the inside may come from observing a person's demeanour which requires more study or by simply being told about it. - To treat it we need to apply compassion and lots of TLC The future of child abuse is that some people carry a subtle awareness that they are damaged property and will avoid committing to relationships and some will bury their abuse so deep that everyone is surprised

It seems almost a cliche'. "Avoid negative people. Eliminate them from your life! They'll only bring you down. One bad apple..." On the surface, it seems like good advice. We all want to feel good. Happy. Successful. How can you feel good if you're around someone who's miserable? ...

Those who suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder, or S.A.D., feel they must hide from other people: "I can't let other people see me." While the intensity of those feelings varies widely, those who suffer from social anxiety disorder share one common underlying premise: "There's something wrong with me, and I can't be fixed." Maybe not those exact words, but you get the idea. When you have S.A.D., you feel flawed and defective to the very core of your being. You feel 'bad and wrong' and nothing you can do will help.

Guilt exists as a fabricated emotion. It holds little or no realness. It's hard to call it a real emotion. You see, a real emotion is one that has both a positive and a negative side. Love, fear, hate, anger, sadness, happiness and so many other emotions all have both a positive and a ...

Your shadow is real. I'm not talking about the dark image that forms on the ground behind you when you face the morning sun. No, I'm talking about a part of your consciousness. Your shadow is born when you are born. It's job is to collect and save all the thoughts and feelings you deny. ...
Be glad we don't live in a place where marriages are arranged or we are restricted to certain partners like a religious cult. Been there, done that. The best advice you can ever gave yourself was to discard any lingering baggage from childhood and get to know yourself really well before you settle down into a relationship. There is nothing worse than sacrificing yourself to an institution that you don't even know if you believe in yet because you don't know your self at all.
I've heard stories from friends about the agony and stress caused by caring for their aging parents. Their rolls vary depending on the level of care their parents' need. Some are fortunate in that their parents require very little care; perhaps just a daily check-in to make sure all is well. Others are faced with greater challenges. A parent may require the level of care offered at a long-term care facility or nursing home.
Emotional Intelligence, the combination of self-awareness, "other"-awareness, ability to recognize and regulate one's own emotions and interpersonal skills, is at the core the ability to listen. Listening Inwardly for our own assumptions, beliefs, and emotional reactions. Listening to what is being communicated to us. Checking it out to see if what we heard is actually what was expressed. Listening changes the world, because everything from medical errors and airplane disaste

Quantum physics clearly demonstrates that energy, in one form or another, constitutes the most fundamental building blocks of the universe. To be even more precise, these building blocks, called quarks, or quanta, are actually the potential for a particular frequency, or state, or amount of energy. I use the word potential because we cannot measure the actual energy involved until we specifically observe it The universe, then, is a field of pure potential that is continually
Recall the opening scene in the blockbuster movie, Forrest Gump â a feather floating in the wind, up and down and all around with no control or sense of direction whatsoever. I would argue that many business people feel that awful feeling of being powerless, being blown around by the latest change of which they have no power, influence or sense of control. Helpless. It is not a good feeling.nLater in the movie, as Forrestâs son is about to leave for his first day of schoo
The older we get – the more we forget – or so it seems. When I began my personal growth journey for recovery I began remembering the most traumatic events that transpired when I was a child. After researching information conce ing memories, I realized that some of the things I was remembering that happened in my childhood might not be accurate. Why - you ask? I am an adult now remember a child’s perception of what happened. When I was a child and experienced a sniper crawlin
Emotions are pesky creatures. They can creep up on you when you least expect it and throw your whole day into a tailspin. They can be good, bad or somewhere in between, but often come up unexpectedly. Understanding your emotions is the key to personal development as they are often a window to your soul. Relax before you React Strong emotions are often the reaction to stressful situations. To take control of your emotions, embrace relaxation techniques during stressful times.
The obvious - but often unspoken - premise of most emotional healing lies with finding a way to rid yourself of those so-called bad emotions. Any way you can. Because some feelings are good, and others are bad. Even little kids knows that. We develop a hierarchy of good and bad emotions: ...
Empathy is on a precipitous decline in the family and home environments. Technology is partly to blame, but so are other social and economic trends. On June 9, 2005 the BBC reported about an unusual project underway in Sheffield (in the United Kingdom). The daily movements and interactions of a family living in a technology-laden, futuristic home are being monitored and recorded. "The aim is to help house builders predict how we will want to use our homes 10 or 20 years from

President Harry Truman said that, "a weeping man is an abomination." Truman was president from the close of World War II into the early 50s. I saw this quote just the other day, and was reminded of my grandfather, Oren Ryals. Oren was my father's father, and when I was a boy I idolized him. He ran a chicken farm on a seven acre spread near McMinnville Oregon in the 50s and early 60s. I got to go down and spend time working there just about every summer between 1956 and 1963.n
"This life is a test. It is only a test. If this had been a real life, you would have received further instructions on what to do and how to do it." Ever heard those words? When you first read them, it's almost a relief. "Whew! It's just a test." But when you look deeper, you ask: "Well ...
Life can be a slow and inarticulate teacher. Yet a few simple, proven ideas can give us all far more control over our lives. Researchers who observe people who succeed in business, study, sport and relationships are revealing some valuable information about the way top achievers think. For me, the biggest surprise is, not so much what they think, but how much difference it makes to the whole of their lives. SECRET 1: CHOICEr
Hope, being the flickering light that gleams and brightens the dimmest paths, permitting to grasp at dreams, wholeheartedly, even when circumstances seem to alienate all positive outcome probabilities. You’ve known, I’m sure, people who have made it beyond their dreams. What makes them different? Sure, you will see incredible perseverance, profound belief, skillful manifestations, outstanding courage but, the inner light of hope that propels through adversity is only ignited when resilience is present. Resilience leads to triumph.
The Emotional Intelligence (EI) of a business's people can be critical to success. Leaders' and employees' emotions can play a role in how people behave (what they say or do). And this behavior can directly impact their customers and the bottom line. In their Harvard Business Review article, ...
In a way, fear is a lot like fire. Fire is essential for life, but it can also rage out of control and even kill you. The goal is not to eliminate fire. You can't. But you can turn it into an ally. You can set the boundaries and the rules and make fire work for you. Just as you can make ...

Our emotions got us into the recession. They can keep us there, or get us out of it. Resilience is the essential ingredient for thriving when budgets are cut, sales are down, when our jobs are threatened or gone, or when we are simply overwhelmed by it all. People who lack resilience can go into a downward spiral of lost confidence, worry, poor motivation, negative thinking and depression.
I have been working with my coach to take my leadership skills to the next level. We recently looked at an emotional intelligence framework to better understand leadership.nnThe grid, as outlined below, has four quadrants. To demonstrate great emotional intelligence the aim is to be highly skilled in all four quadrants. My coach began to outline that I was fantastic in three areas but one area was greatly missing. It is no secret that who you know is just as important as what you know. In fact who you know may be more important than what you know because if you know someone who knows it you don't have to know it. Now there's a mouthful. n Knowing them is not enough. You've got to know them well enough ...
Ralph Waldo Emerson said "Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole and, once it has done so, he will have to accept that his life will be radically changed." Alte ative Healers from all over ...
A truth is seen by one person as factual, verifiable. The funny part of it is that it will vary from one individual’s perception to the next. Your perception is the way you receive and process a fact and what it means to you. It will be influenced by your values, previous experiences, your background, culture and environment.
Psst! Abuse. Shhh! Voicing openly on the subject of abuse is still largely considered taboo and best kept as ‘civilized’ society's dirty little ‘bully secret’. When you think about it, it’s quite inconceivable that in every society bullying as domestic abuse is more acceptable than unacceptable. In fact, there are millions of people who never admit to being ‘abused’; they either accept it as part of their upbringing or it’s so deeply hidden inside that they find it too painful to face so “it’s best not to go there”. Wrong!
Betrayal, big or small, trashes your heart to bits. You do survive and heal. When it has been shattering, your scar will usually be deep and render you hyper-sensitive. You may have a tendency to armor yourself in order to protect yourself from any other injury. This armor may be so absolute, so impenetrable that you may trash any trustworthy or loving relationship in the future, or at least, that’s what can happen if you’re not careful!
Deadbeat Parents This is someone who never grew up themselves and usually clings to their own parents too much or disassociates altogether. They are in fact mostly men, but women do it, too. On the other hand you can find a deadbeat parent right in the next room, leaving all of the child rearing up to the other parent or the television.
