The most important skill a leader possesses is the ability to think. Remember, when you were a student in school, your teacher always told you to put your “thinking cap” on? It’s still true; leaders must always have their thinking caps on to operate at their highest level. Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company and the thinker credited with creating the first manufacturing assembly line said, “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.”

" I'm going to make this place your home" I was just listening to the radio and heard a song by Philip Philips entitled "Home." It reminded me of how important it is to return home whenever we feel overwhelmed with the day-to-day happenings of life. I know it is true in my case that I've been too busy lately worrying about my budget, paying bills, getting the car repaired, trying to find a place to live, working out at the gym, managing my health, and investing in my relationship. Phil's song "Home" reminded me that it is time to come home.
Many Baby Boomers today probably have a 22 year old who is just entering the "real" job market. No longer working at McDonald's, mowing grass or the local department store. Here are 3 things a Baby Boomer should teach their 22 year old child. #1 Start Saving Earlier
âBe enthusiastic as a leader. You can't light a fire with a wet match!â â Author Unknown Isnât it interesting that we can light a firecracker on the 4th of July faster than we can ignite a fire in ourselves and our team? I had a client recently that complained they were having a hard time generating enthusiasm and passion from their team. When I started asking them the right questions I could see where the breakdown was coming from. Enthusiasm starts at the top. You g
"A man with a supply of idea fears nothing for he has become the master of his own fate." - Robert P. Crawford How do you use your mind to create ideas that open the floodgates to other opportunities? One way is to set an intention to create a great idea and then to follow the thought up with action. Did you know that your mind is the most awesome tool in the universe? If you didn't, consider the following, your mind can create medicines that save hundreds of thousands of lives, or it can destroy as many souls by the creation of deadly biological substances.
One summer while I was on vacation from college I became a tin man: selling aluminum siding and roofing door to door in the Boston area. The business has a bad reputation but our siding and our roofs were the finest available. Our prices were high but fair. In spite of what consumers always want to believe, you can’t get the best without paying for it.

The self image of a person is the rudder that determines every single aspect of their lives, to include career, friendships, martial partners, hobbies, and physical health. When a child grows up with a damaged self esteem, their rudder constantly sways them towards negative and toxic relationships that often cause greater harm and even further damage. Conversely, a vibrant and thriving self image draws that person to the heights with a continual drive to achieving the best that life has to offer.

Enrich Relationships Here’s a BELIEF from which you can lead as a leader, manager, be it in corporate America or in the privacy of your home: “Conversations can either enable you and increase your capacity for reflection and judgment, or they can demean you and constrict your ability to make good and thoughtful judgments.”
Good leaders must possess the ability to effectively communicate to superiors, subordinates, and peers. Responsive leaders must not only be able to communicate effectively, they must be able to communicate in a timely manner with clear purpose and intent.
Zig Ziglar describes well the essence of the fifth core practice, “Receive,” of a Work Positive lifestyle in which you increase sales with greater team productivity so you get out of the office earlier: “When you help others get what they want, you get everything you want,” he said. Positive and Negative Intentions are Directions. Which Direction do you Choose? The past couple of days I've been covering the topic of love. I stated that love is a choice based on your intentions/thoughts not your feelings. I also pointed out that in order to start attracting more positive, accountable, generous, compassionate, loving and caring people into your life, you needed to start looking at your own intentions/thoughts.
I do not quite remember who said this but one of the most familiar quotes which I found nearly everywhere I went when I was getting into college was ‘when the going is tough, the tough gets going’. I don’t think many people will argue that volunteering is a good thing. Volunteering strengthens and improves communities, supports good causes, provides leadership experience, and looks good on your resume. Volunteering allows you to truly make a difference in the lives of others, and makes you feel good about yourself. Volunteering also makes you more invested in your community, and allows you to pursue your passions.
Okay, so enough already. We hear from managers all the time about how they “multi-task” to be more effective. It may be time to really review this myth. Multi-tasking came from the home, where multiple projects can happen simultaneously. A good example might be that the laundry is ...
It costs too much to do business with some people. Who are your “some people?” How much time do they steal from your enjoyable customers? How much energy do you give them? How much attention that can be more profitably invested in your ideal customers’ relationships? You’re throwing good time, energy, attention and therefore money after bad. So why are you doing business with “some people?” Select one of them. Just one. The most obnoxious of the bunch. Fire them. Passion is defined as a strong emotion or feeling about something, or, a burst of strong emotions. We all are passionate about things in our lives: our family, children, hobbies and, hopefully our careers. I recently read the book The Corner Office by Adam Bryant. The book captures the thoughts of numerous CEOs in many different industries. Specifically, it is about how they not only advanced their own careers to that top spot but also what they look for in hiring people and promoting people inside their organizations.
Most of us would like to be better communicators. As leaders, co-workers, team members and in all of the other roles we play both professionally and personally, we know that communication is a major key to success. When we are frustrated or stymied by something, often better communication ...
It is the rare human being who can maintain confidence 100% of the time. Even the best of leaders experience dips in confidence from time to time, from context to context and from situation to situation. The key is building your 'confidence' muscles.
Comedian Bill Cosby once said, âI'm not the boss of my house. I don't know how I lost it, I don't know when I lost it, I don't really think I ever had it. But I've seen the boss' job...and I don't want it!" Like it or not, there are times we are in charge. There are times we are all leaders â as a parent, in the classroom, through work, in a club, on a sports team or in a volunteer organization. And we can always become better leaders. Here are ten common leadership blund
There is nothing like “January” to make one feel refreshed and motivated to start a new direction. Unfortunately, for many, the January energy fizzles out before the month is over. The big obstacle to change is keeping the momentum going throughout the entire year. Here are some tips to help achieve that outcome and hopefully help you achieve your plan for 2015. 1. Start by only listing things you truly want, not faintly desire. Be passionate!
One of the great opportunities of leadership is the delegation of tasks to others, which not only frees up your time to be more strategic but also develops those employees to whom you’ve delegated. Although it is a great opportunity for leaders, it is also a great challenge. Delegating means letting go of a fair amount of, if not all of, the control associated with the way tasks are completed. I find this to be a struggle for many leaders, myself included. As the owner of my business, I find that letting go of tasks and delegating to others can be quite a challenge at times.
Our attention has been riveted by one person’s heinous actions and the consequences felt in Newtown, CT. Complete understanding of this tragedy defies our intellect. However, we do choose how to respond. While I pray such disaster avoids your area, reality suggests some variation will strike. Perhaps not as catastrophic, but every community experiences a similar event. Your customers in your community keep your lights on, pay your mortgage, educate your children, and support you in your lifestyle. You receive much from them.
There will never be enough time to do it all. The best we can hope for is not to get a lot of tasks completed in our busy schedules, rather it is that we complete the right tasks. My own ministry is often driven by what I term “paperwork” including bulletins, newsletters, web site design, and other such odd jobs. I believe that it’s important for the church to put her best foot forward, so I am often driven by the details. Occassionally, however, I find myself in need of a re
The people from Montana are well aware that the nation is struggling with a debt crisis. The road that got us here was one of deficit spending where our government spent much more than it received in taxes. This has continued with the most recent budget proposals and unless we take a stand, the national deficit will continue to boom for at least another ten years. Under the current proposals the national could double during that time.
Leadership accountability isn’t just evaluated by the marker of profitability. There are many components to accountability but the most strikingly overlooked one is buried deep within the relationship of a leader and the workforce: the truth. According to Sergeant Friday from the Dragnet television series, getting “just the facts, ma’am” doesn’t always tell the whole story. Accountability is based on truth but what percentage of the truth are employees presenting to leadersh
ust one of the versus in Psalm's 46, verse 10, inspires many inspirational Christian stories. The KJV states it like this; “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth”. Good leadership skills come from every part of life, including and more most importantly the scriptures. We can analyze this backwards and forwards and it never stops having a new meaning. The night my Son was born I had to no choice but to be still and know that He was God! He was born two months early several years ago in a small out of the way hos
I recently read two different posts that caused me to think about how people are treated in the workplace. The first was a series written by Chad Balthrop about the trap of transactional leadership. It seems that sometimes, many times, actually, we view our personal interactions as transactions and our language expresses that belief. The second was a post by Tristan Bishop focusing on how purpose improves productivity. What is the purpose of a business?
To managers and employees alike, micromanage is a dreaded word. It is defined in the dictionary as, “to manage or control with excessive attention to minor details.” Most popular management and leadership books suggest that micromanaging should be avoided at all costs – as a matter of fact, they even offer decisive tips on how NOT to do it.
The time changed for most of the U.S. last weekend. We “fell back.” How does this change affect you? Pretty much like any change does. Here are 3 Timely Strategies to Positive Change: Acknowledge the Changer Like most change, the reversal back to Standard Time came without our permission. Congress extended Daylight Savings Time without so much as a phone call to my office…or yours. That’s the way change operates. It shows up without so much as a warning for many of us. We find ourselves blindsided by a software change, a systems change, a pricing change, and the list goes on.
When I am coaching leaders and high achievers regarding their executive presence I hear of the same obstacle over and over again. In fact it always comes up in the very first conversation we have – although they do not realize it or recognize it. Because I have coached so many people I can immediately detect it in the way they explain their frustrations or lack of confidence in achieving personal or professional goals. As I quietly liste I can also hear what they aren’t saying – as they talk around the subject without directly addressing it.
Silence, yes, silence, is a powerful leadership tool. There are many adages about silence such as “he who speaks first loses,” or “silence is golden” which comes from a longer phrase “speech is silver, silence is golden,” placing a much greater value on silence, not just the spoken word. Recent research by New York University’s Ste School of Business Department of Management and Organizational Behavior shows that the workforce is remaining silent. This type of silence is not
It started when a Monarch butterfly appeared in my garden, lighting on the only milkweed plant in the yard. My leadership & life lesson was about to begin: I discover that Monarchs lay tiny, pinpoint-sized eggs ONLY on milkweed. The tiny caterpillars (larvae) emerge and begin gorging ONLY on milkweed, stripping it down to the stalk. Horrified that the yellow/black caterpillars will run out of food, I race to the nursery. Three trips to the nursery! $10 every time per plant. The little buggers are voracious and multiplying like grains of sand.
