IS ADDICTION A DISEASE? I certainly have my own thoughts on this question. Understanding the “disease” nature of addiction, because it gave me peace of mind, saved my life. Trust me; I’m not trying to be dramatic. From being free of active addiction for over 16 years, I know that the disease can be kept in remission. It took action on my part to get to the place where things are in remission. I belong to several professional “discussion groups” and offer you the following from one of them:r
HOLISTIC? /SPIRITUAL? WHOA I love to think that the huge positive changes in my life over the past 16 years or so have been holistic and as part of this, there has been a “spiritual awakening” (like brought out of a spiritual coma) as a part of what has happened. Let’s go to Webster’s for a couple of accepted definitions. Holistic: treatment of the whole organism; not just the symptoms of a disease. If we give our children sound self-love, they will be able to deal with whatever life puts before them. bell hooks Growing up, like many other young people, I wanted to be accepted by my peer groups. Now there is one word—a single word—which can blast the morality of altruism out of existence and which it cannot withstand—the word: “Why?” Why must man live for the sake of others? Why must he be a sacrificial animal? Why is that the good? There is no earthly reason for it—and, ladies and gentlemen, in the whole history of philosophy no earthly reason has ever been given.r
"How do I create a fitness program that will last-whe I'm time crunched, stressed, and overwhelmed?" This is a questio I'm asked all the time: "How can I fit it all in? What is your first reaction when someone says or does something that hurts you? After âOuch,â that is. The pain could be from the slip of the tongue or the slip of a hammer. Some of us might jump immediately to blaming someone or something else for causing us pain. LIFE ON THE MERRY-GO-ROUND I’m generally not a computer pack rat, and tend to keep my inbox, sent and so on with little stuff in them. That being said, every now and again I hold on to something which I’ve read and intuitively know it is going to be very real on an upcoming day. Below is something I received back in very early September. I was aware that it was there, and in talking with a couple of clients today, it reminded me to look back and share.r

MORE-THAT FIRST STEP (forgiveness) As usual, my coaching mentor, Dr. Randin Brons has hit a very good topic with this week's Idea Engineer. Recently I did a blog on that first step that sparked very good response. Response indicates that it caused some thought, and I love to do that internally and spark it in others. Randin talks about a first step to forgiveness, and his words are in keeping with I try to live and coach others in.
The four candles burn slowly. The ambiance was so soft that you could hear them talking. The first one said “I am Peace. However no one can keep me lit. I believe I will go out.” It’s flame rapidly diminishes and goes out completely. The second one says “I am Faith. Most of all I am no longer indispensable, so it doesn’t make any sense that I stay lit any longer.” When it finished, talking, a breeze softly blew on it putting it off. P: Priority, Participation, and Presence One of your major priorities in business should be to give top-notch customer service. From the beginning to the end of your meeting with a client, give them an experience that they will remember. One of the best ways to create that experience is to anticipate your client’s needs. When I had a heart attack a little over five years ago, I asked, “Why?” And my doctor told me that I had a high level of a rare form of cholesterol that sticks to itself and to artery walls like Velcro, making me three times more liable to have a heart attack than the average person. Furthermore, my doctor told me there was no medication, diet, or exercise - nothing I could do – that would lower this level. I felt nothing but despair. It sounded like a death sentence to me.
THE POWER OF ACCEPTANCE As each new year begins, I love to go through and meditate on the 12 steps. My mentor Dr. Randin Brons just published the following thoughts in his Idea Engineer, and lo and behold they go right to the first step’s theme. ACCEPTANCE. He wrote: The power of acceptancer
