Is it important to eat after a workout? The answer is a resounding ‘Yes’!! Your body is highly susceptible to food right after exercise. What that means is that your body needs and wants food at that time. It is a very effective time to eat for your body uses the food very effectively. Your body absorbs the nutrients and uses them to the best of its ability.
Your body is extremely vulnerable to efficient use of food within 20-30 minutes post workout.
The question I am sure which is on your mind is, “What do I eat?” I didn’t do an hour worth (or more) of exercise so that I could put it all back on by eating right away. Remember what I said earlier. Your body uses the food highly efficiently with in that time period. You haven’t worked out in vane. In fact, the sooner you eat afterwards, the less hungry you are later so that you don’t eat the house down.
This does not give you license to eat whatever you want though. Don’t go get yourself a burger, veggie or otherwise. Don’t fill up on cheese, chips, or other fatty foods.
The best thing you can do for your body and your mind. I include your mind because you will feel satiated after you eat nutritionally sound.
Eat some lean protein with some complex carbs plus some fruit. This is what your body is craving. You have used up your glycogen stores. You need to replace them. You don this through the complex carbs and fruit. The protein is for your muscles that have been depleted from all that hard work.
A great post workout meal is: Greek yogurt – very high in protein (twice as much as regular yogurt) with granola, raisins and slivered almonds. You decide how much you need of this. Your body will tell you when to quit. Don’t gorge yourself or stingy with your amount but rather eat to content. Make sure to drink lots of water with it.
So eating immediately upon stopping your work out is tremendously important. Remember that there is a window of 20-30 minutes that you have for the greatest results. Treat your body with respect. It will treat you well in return. It will release that excess fat! How wonderful you get to eat to lose fat. Now eat and get thin!
