Many people start an online business with the expectation of making thousands (or even millions) right away. Sadly, most of them get discouraged when it doesn’t happen and then neglect their business complaining that you can’t make money online.

The reasons these people don’t make money is simple. They were never given the proper information to be successful with their online business. There are a number of steps that you need to take to be successful online. This knowledge is not something that we are born with, you need to acquire it. Following are the 7 basic steps required to make money with your online business.

1. You have to determine a broad subject (or niche) that interests you. All of your online efforts will relate to this niche. Make sure it is a subject that you are knowledgeable about and one that you are interested in. This is important because you will be doing a lot of work in this area. If you enjoy the subject, you are more likely to continue working on it, even when times are slow.

2. Make sure that the niche that you have chosen is a profitable one. Do a search using several search terms relating to your niche. Are there numerous products for sale within the niche? Check out a number of sales pages for different products in your niche. What is the Alexa ranking and page rank of these sites? Have they been around for a while?

3. Find profitable products within your niche. Go to ClickBank or Commission Junction and research a number of products that are related to your niche. Find products that are popular and selling well. Make sure these products are of good quality and represent good value. You never want to promote a crappy product, you business will never even get off the ground if your products are inferior.

Of course, this is not a comprehensive list. It is outside the scope of one or two articles to provide a detailed plan to make money online. But this list can get you started and point you in the right direction.
