Learning from M.O.N.E.Y

Let us learn from the word “M O N E Y.”

Embedded in the word money is “ONE.” It is the smallest unit and smallest value of money. When we realize the value of every single rupee we start becoming money conscious. Little drops of water and little grains of sand make the mighty ocean and the pleasant land.

Similarly every rupee adds up to a huge fortune. Every saving and every loss has its root in the smallest unit of money. If you think a single rupee is insignificant then you develop a wrong and wasteful habit of losing Money. Do not be surprised if you lose an entire fortune by this irresponsible way of handling money. Valuing every single rupee is not being “stingy” as it is commonly considered. It has everything to do with us being aware, being methodical and in control. Bigger problems occur when smaller issues are neglected. The huge titanic sank because of a small hole in it.

Never underestimate the power of the single unit, “One.” When you start saving in units of one, it is sure to become a huge saving. Your awareness and consciousness should be so high that not even a single unit of money should flow through your life without your knowledge and control.
There is something interesting in the world of numbers. There are only two numbers — 0 and 1. The rest of the numbers are only their combinations. 0 symbolizes the end and 1 symbolizes a new beginning. We have a tradition to gift Rs. 11, Rs. 21 etc. When you gift Rs. 11, Rs. 51, Rs. 501 you are wishing the other person a new beginning. Also adding a “1” is a sign of abundance — a little extra. When you go to buy milk or ground nuts the hawker adds a little extra out of his abundance.

If you remove the word “ONE” from Money you have the letters “M” and “Y.” Together the letters form the word “MY.” The message is loud and clear — “Be only concerned with your money.” The pity is we are more bothered about other people’s money than our own. How much our neighbor earns is of more concern than our own salary. We are more curious about the signing amounts of film stars or sports personalities than about what our son or daughter’s earning. We also are like the daily newspaper when we keep publicizing this with spice to whomever we meet.

You may be bothered about national budgets, national economy and global monetary situations, and what not. But, what about “my money?” This money is your own. You can touch and feel it and spend it for your needs and happiness. All the other types, you cannot touch even with a pole. No one is going to part with their money because you are interested in it. Your money is yours. Their money is theirs. Mind your own money and let others mind theirs.
