How old is too old? Aging, or growing older is not a disease; it is a process that every one of us is going through. In affairs of the heart, age hardly matters. When a person grows older, it does not mean that the desire for companionship and intimacy diminish. Single seniors enjoy making sociable connections just as the younger generation. Not all seniors who enter the dating world are looking to marry again. Others are simply there for the friendships that just might be rewarding. Sadly, however, senior dating is still not fully accepted in the society. The misconceptions that dating is only for the young, and that seniors are way too old to date, has always existed for as long as dating has been around.

But, with the advent of the internet and a more open-minded attitude towards dating, this perspective is rapidly changing. Online dating sites for seniors offer them the best chance to make connections easily and meet other hopeful single seniors searching for a date. Other dating sites, which cater to unattached people of all ages, are available, too, and this would sometimes lead to a May/December romance. There are a lot of younger singles who prefer the wisdom and maturity of an older individual; others find the distinguished-looking man or the worldly, more mature woman more attractive and sexually appealing than their younger counterparts.

However, this kind of romance often causes obstacles for the seniors, the greatest of which is the reaction of their grown children. If the senior is widowed, some children take the attitude that nobody should replace their mother or father. At any age, children are usually unforgiving if the parent moves on after a separation, and especially after a parent’s death. Others simply find it hard to understand that their parents have the same feelings and needs as they do, while some react out of a need to protect their parent from being taken advantage of. It is not uncommon for children and grandchildren to view the senior’s date as a gold digger, which sometimes makes sense.

However, it is still the seniors’ prerogative whether it is the right time for them to move on or not. Another common obstacle is health. Some illness that accompanies aging may sometimes get in the way. Physical limitations, such as painful joints due to arthritis, may limit the senior from fully enjoying some of the activities while dating. But, with the right medicine and therapy, seniors can get a great deal out of dating. Online dating sites are not the only option for seniors to meet other singles. Senior groups hold charity events, dances and other activities where like minded individuals can meet and enjoy good times while getting to know each other better.

Churches also have singles group for a specific age range, with activities based on their age and interests. Single seniors date not just for sex, and it shouldn’t be perceived like that. A vast number of seniors date for companionship and to fill emptiness in their lives. This is but normal, and should be respected. Seniors have as much rights as the younger individuals when it comes to dating. Like they say, all is fair in love and war. That goes for dating, too!
